We have just finished the pious month of Ramadan and Seva Darshan ha
started its Ramayana reading in all its units. It is good to note that even in this season of summer vacation, large number of people are reviving the habit of reading the scripture in their homes during this time.
We need to be having Ramayan days instead of months. The message of love, respect, family value
Dharma and sacrifices are filled within the stories of the Ramayan. Every individual needs to practice how t
imbibe the qualities of these great people in our daily life. Ritualistic reading of the scriptures must b
avoided. The significance of our religious festivals is purely spiritual. Hope the coming years we would ensur
world derive a spiritual satisfaction by observing these month long fasts and prayers.
Our great scriptures like Ramayana and Mahabharata clearly gives a message of how human beings mu
live in the world. For generations these teaching have passed on still gaining respect from around the world
Since we mortal humans are carried away by our temporary physical body and its aspirations, we often tend tignore our divine soul and how develop and attachment with it. This is the message of the scriptures that help u
live a better life. The Ramayana teaches us the dharma pertaining to an individual, the family and the society.
With the passing away of Dr. A. P.J Abdul Kalam, our former President one of our foremost scientist, an
a visionary who ignited innumerable minds, Bharat has lost one of its sons, who, as a scientist, had made semin
contributions to our defense preparedness, and as a statesman, made Bharat proud, by enhancing the prestige o
the President's office through his exemplary conduct of the affairs of our presidency.
Dr. Abdul Kalam's life, from obscurity as a small boy growing up in the temple town of Rameswaram, t
becoming Bharat's eleventh President, was a tale of extraordinary courage, determination, perseverance and th
desire to excel. His life story is as well the story of our missiles, Agni, Prithvi, Akash, Trishul and Nag, has raiseour Nation as one of the missile powers of International reckoning, He, who had faith in Bharat's rich heritag
and strong belief in our talented youth, wanted Bharat to emerge has a knowledgeable society and a
empowered nation.
While sharing this deep sorrow with the entire Nation, which is insurmountable loss to our Nation
Seva Darshan Kuwait express its heartfelt condolence to his family and pray almighty bestow peace to his de
parted soul. We take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to work towards the progress of our Natio
and bring the dream of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam to a reality, the reality of Bharat becoming the 'Vishwa Guru', lead
ing world as one family, with its message of strength and peace.
It was indeed a blessing for Seva Darshan members to honour Dr. Kalam on the day of Guru Pooja, Thfull moon day of the Ashada month is known as the Guru Poornima Day and is reserved for Guru Puja. It is th
birth anniversary of India's greatest sage VedVyasa. The word 'GURU' is translated as the "dispeller
darkness". The Guru dispels ignorance and leads the aspirants to a path of enlightenment.
The society and nation is our Guru. We stand together and help one another at times of need.
We provide Seva (or service) as and when needed and not only when asked. We strive together as a
strong family. And alone can bring prosperity to us and the Nation.

Dr. APJ –Leading Light of the Nation
Bharat Ratna Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, generally known as Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, was th
11th President of India (2002-07), a career scientist turned reluctant politician. Dr. A.P.J. was born to a poor Tam
Muslim family on 15 October 1931 at Rameswaram in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. His father, Jainulabdeen, w
a boat owner, and his mother, Ashiamma, was a homemaker. He had seven siblings, and a doting mother who,
times, made chappatis for Kalam, while the others were given rice as Kalam's day would start at four in the mornin
and end at 11 pm. He started working at a young age to support his father.
He was a hardworking and bright student with a strong desire to learn things. He used to study for hour
especially mathematics. He completed his schooling from Rameshwaram Elementary School. In 1954 he graduat
in Physics from St. Joseph's College in Tiruchirappalli, which was then affiliated to the University of Madra
Thereafter in 1955 he moved to Madras and joined the Madras Institute of Technology and studied aerospace eng
neering. His dream was to become a fighter pilot but he was ranked ninth while the IAF offered only eight slots.
Kalam was brought up in a multi-religious, tolerant society; one with a progressive outlook. His father oft
quoted from the Quran to make the young Kalam see the world without fear. His father wasn't educated, but
wanted Kalam to study. Kalam would get up at 4 am, bathe, and then go for his mathematics class, which w
taught by a teacher who took only five students in the whole session; and bathing before class was a condition
had laid to all his students. After his morning class, Kalam went around
town distributing the newspaper. As the town had no electricity, kero-
sene lamps were lit at his home between 7 pm and 9 pm. But because
Kalam studied until 11, his mother would save some for him for later
use.
The flight of birds had fascinated him since he was a boy, but it
was years later he realised that he wanted to fly aircrafts. After finishing
school, he took up Physics at St Joseph's College, Trichi, but towards
the end he was dissatisfied. When he discovered aeronautical
engineering, he regretted having lost three precious years.

At Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Chennai, where Kalam studied aeronautics, he learnt an importa
lesson: the value of time. He was leading a project on system design, when one day the principal walked into t
class to see his work. He appeared dissatisfied and told Kalam that he wanted the project finished in the next tw
days; else his scholarship aid would be withdrawn. That unsettled Kalam; years of his father's hardships wou
come to naught. Kalam worked without food and sleep. On the last day, his professor came to check on his progre
He was impressed and said: "I was putting you under stress and asking you to meet a difficult deadline," recount
Dr Kalam. Although Kalam has led several projects in his professional life, he's treated each like his last. Such w
his passion.
Kalam earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology and in 195
joined the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). He started his career by designing
small helicopter for the Indian Army. Kalam was also part of the INCOSPAR committee working under Vikar
Sarabhai, the renowned space scientist. In 1969, Kalam was transferred to the Indian Space research Organisati
(ISRO) where he was the project director of India's first Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) which successful
deployed the Rohini satellite in near -earth orbit in July 1980 and made India an exclusive member of Space Clu
He was responsible for the evolution of ISRO's launch vehicle programme, particularly the PSLV configuratio
Success followed Dr Kalam. Prithvi, Agni, Akash, Trishul and Nag missiles were huge successes.
After working for two decades in ISRO and mastering launch vehicle technologies, Dr. Kalam took up the respons
bility of developing Indigenous Guided Missiles at DRDO as the Chief Executive. He was responsible for the dev
opment and operationalization of AGNI and PRITHVI Missiles and for building indigenous capability in critic
technologies through networking of multiple institutions.

nationals abroad. These books have been
translated in many Indian languages.
His focus is on transforming India into a developed nation by 2020. He is
one of the few presidents who have

The Temple of No Colors
Colors add color to life too
The hue which we see may not really be what it signifies
The blue of the sky, the aqua, and the blue of pain, hurt
The red of love and that of blood
But with them we can paint our dreams
Reach where we really cannot reach
Touch what we cannot have
The portrait of the sixth sense
With a brush stroke we are making a world of our own
Which nobody could realize, nobody could exploit
We are Gods of the lifeless yet colorful lives within
The temple already started spinning by the time I reached its winding stone steps
Below I could see some familiar faces, smiling at me
They all were the faces of my paintings
There were crimson red flowers, burnt umber butterflies, sap green leaves
All getting faded I need to climb fast, or else
I will be faded too
The spinning acquired speed, when I touched the temple
It was mist covered…yet I could see everything so vivid
The winding stone steps started flying off
I left my canvas, oil pigments, brushes, and imaginations
And I melted into the colorless mist…

The Foolish Sage
Once upon a time, there was a sage called
Deva Sharma who lived in a temple in the
outskirts of a town. He was widely known
and respected. People would visit him, and
offer him with gifts, food, money and gar-
ments to seek his blessings. The gifts thathe did not need for himself, he would sell
off, and got rich on the proceeds. And by
nature, he trusted nobody. He never trusted anybody. So, he kept all his money in a
bag which he carried under his arm all the time. He would not part with the bag for a
single moment.
One day, a swindler came across the sage, and he became sure that the bag this holy
man was so possessive of, must surely contain a lot of treasure. He planned on steal-
ing the bag from the sage, but could not think of a way to do so. He thought, "I can-
not make a hole in the temple wall, or
jump over the high gates. But I can
charm him with sweet words to accept
me as his disciple." He wondered, "If I
can stay with him as a disciple, I can win
his confidence. When I get an oppor-tunity, I will rob him, and leave this
place."

Having planned so, the swindler approached the holy man with reverence, "Om Namah
Shivaya! (I bow before Lord Shiva, the God of Destruction)". With these words, he
fell on the sage's feet and said, "O Guruji, Please guide me to the right path of life. I
am fed-up with life, and want to seek peace."
The sage kindly replied, "My son, I will surely guide you. You are blessed because you
have come to me to seek peace at this young age". This was the opportunity the swin-
dler was seeking, and he at once touched the feet of the sage for blessings, "O Guru-
ji, please accept me as your disciple. I will do
whatever you ask me to do."
The sage accepted the swindler as his disci-
ple, but only on a condition. He said, "A holy
man as me is recommended to spend the night
alone without company. This helps me to medi-
tate also. So, you will not be allowed to enter
the temple at night. You will sleep in a hut atthe gate of the temple."
The swindler agreed, "I shall willingly serve
your wishes in every way that you ask me to."
In the evening, the sage initiated the rituals and formally took the swindler as his
disciple. The swindler in return proved him an obedient disciple. He messaged his
hands and feet, wash his feet and helped him with all the rituals along with cleaningthe temple. Although the sage was happy with his disciple, the swindler could not gain
enough confidence for the sage to part with his bag when he was around. As days
passed by, the swindler started getting frustrated, "He does not trust me enough to
leave the bag with me. I can gain access to the bag if I kill him with a knife or feed
him with poison."

When he was thinking all this, the swindler saw a young boy visit the sage. He was the
son of one of the sage's followers. He invited the sage, "O Guruji, I have come here
personally to invite you to our house for the ceremony of sacred thread. Please ac-
cept the invitation to sanctify the ceremony with your kind presence."
The sage accepted the invitation, and after some time started off for the town with
the swindler. On the way, they came across a river, where the sage thought of reliev-
ing himself. He folded the bagful of money in his robe. He asked his disciple to look
after it, "My child, Look after the robe until I return". This was the opportunity thatthe swindler was seeking all the while. As soon as the sage went behind the bushes,
the swindler ran away with the bagful of money.
When the sage returned, he did not find the disciple around but found his robe lying
on the ground. Shocked and anxious, he
peered inside only to find his bag of
money was gone. At once he knew what
had happened, and began to shout, "Oh.
Where are you, you rascal. You have
robbed me." The sage then started
trailing the swindler's footsteps, but
he reached town. He knew he will not
be able to catch hold of him. He stayed
the night in town to return empty-
handed to his temple next morning.
The wise indeed say: Do not be taken in by the sweet words of a swindler

Movie TimeKrishnakumar Paliath
Usually, I don’t write more than
a few words about any movie
on by blog. Not that, it would
make a difference on the view-
ers or reader. But, I think it’s not much to
worry about.
‘Premam’ is the latest blockbuster Mala-
yalam film to take Kerala by storm and is
soon becoming one of the highest grossing
movie of our times. Several critics and
reviews have compared the movie to Malayalam’s all-time hits and the lead actors have been compared to
super star’s like Mohanlal and Mamooty.
These days the internet can make and break a movie. I went for the movie reading reviews of fans and lis-
tening to actual people speak wonders on the movie. Being a movie buff, I knew I was not to expect any-
thing much from it. But the experience left a bad taste in me.
I always feel, any movie that can make you think and react is a good movie. A good movie can make you
feel happy, can make you feel sad, can get you frightened and then some like Premam, leave you with abso-
lutely no feeling other than disgust at the time wasted.
The school going George is like many of us. The young boy who has a crush on a girl from school. Day
dreaming about her. But isn’t Nivin taking this role too monotonously. How many more movies will you
keep throwing at us with the same roles? The fresh face of Anupama Parameshwaran with her bee hive
hairstyle may be accepted by a few.
Then as the movie moves forward come the Mohanlal mimic from Nivin. And he carries is so far as to
show that typical Indian youth who lose out on love, drink all their life and become a rowdy with a don’t
care attitude. Come on grow up. Which era is the writer living in. Then the wild youth falls in love with the
college lecturer, who by the way is the only saving grace in the movie. The love affair is so callously shown
as though this is what regularly happens in our institutions.

Having studied in one of the craziest colleges in Kerala, I wouldn’t expect any of the well-known
goons of college go drunk into class room and romance the lecturer next door. And even for fun sake
and the lighter side of the movie, if it did happen, it was directed quite bad. Leaving us numb from
boredom.
Every moment you are sitting there hoping the movie to take the unexpected twist and all you get is
cliché’s after cliché’s. The role of Vinay Fort and few other of the comedians are horrible,. A bit of
grace for the script writer who has left comedy in nooks and corners to keep you from snoring. What
as with that horse coming to the coffee shop? And the music was just average which I am sure manyof the people who saw the movie couldn’t even whistle a few lines. And they say, the youth in Kerala
identify themselves with Nivin, The parents are rushing to the theatres to watch the movie to watch
the school boy running after your daughter and the drunken and rowdy son who drink on campus and
the sober version marrying a girl young enough to be his daughter maybe. The new generation seems
to be heading for a fabulous time.
The release of the movie’s pirated CD was quite unfortunate and definitely it would hut any movie
producer. But is this the first time we have had this issue? What is all the fuss about ? And don’t even
compare this movie to the classics made in the 80’s and early 90’s because, then you had actors and
directors competing with scripts of real value and the blockbusters they created where when the film
tickets cost 10RS a piece compared to over 150RS today. Is the controversy a promotional gimmick?
As they say, all is fair in war and ‘Premam’. Hope Nivin chooses roles more intelligently or he may
get buried in the countless faces that have graced the Malayalam screens for a few days and then dis-
appeared. He need not be Mohanlal, he better try to be a better Nivin Pauly himself and give us some
class performances.
