gThe Peter Minuit Chapter was founded in 1969 in New York City. Our Organizing Regent, Vivien Vecchiarelli, and the other Charter Members worked closely with then State Regent Adele Erb Sullivan to form a chapter that would meet after the work day to accommodate working women. We continue this tradition today, meeting regularly at sites of historic significance around New York City.
Our Chapter was named for Peter Minuit, the director of the New Netherlands Colony from 1626-1633, who is best remembered as the man who bought the island of Manhattan from the Indians for the legendary sum of 60 Dutch guilders, or $24.00.
Our 101 members are represented in a wide variety of professions, and approximately 23% of our members are Juniors, Daughters under 36 years of age. A number of our members are active in the New York State Organization and the National Society. We are especially proud of a dedicated group of young members who actively serve as National and State Pages.
Peter Minuit Chapter has thrived in recent years because of a renewed interest in patriotism and the work of the DAR. At the 2005 New York State Conference, and for the second year in a row, our Chapter received an award for the most new members by application of all Chapters in New York State during the past year. We are very active in supporting the various projects of the DAR and for the past several years have consistently been among the highest scoring Chapters in the state for DAR Chapter Achievement Award.
Chapter meetings are held on Monday and Tuesday evenings, and include programs on historic preservation, education, American history, women’s issues and national defense. Our Chapter also hosts special events and outings throughout the year.

The knickerbocker chapter, NSDAR was installed November 4, 2004, with 19 members. Since then, we have grown to a diverse group of 89 women between the ages of 20 and 70, with more women in their 20’s and 30’s joining all the time. We’re a very active chapter, involved with all kinds of projects and social events...there’s really something for everyone, no matter their interests and budget. We do some charitable work, support our soldiers with care packages, and raise money for the chapter in a number of fun ways, including gala balls and our annual historic pub crawl. We are on Facebook and Twitter, have an online newsletter and distribute our yearbook in PDF. We enthusiastically support causes backed by our National Society in support of God, Home and country, and offer a program that includes historical and commemorative events as well as a variety of social occasions.
New member inquiries are welcome, and we are happy to assist prospective memberswith documentation for their application papers. Please browse our website atwww.knickerbockerdar.com or contact us directly at [email protected].
