Claire Bailey.
PK & Kindergarten Corner
Ms. McFatter's Pre-K class has
been studying a unit on clothes.
We have talked about different
types of clothes fasteners, clothes
can have letters, numbers, and
patterns, and we can make
clothes! We are learning
that letters have sounds which
make words that we can read!
We are recognizing everywhere
we look we see letters, numbers
or shapes! We're reading our
books about clothes and enjoying
them. Also, we're learning how to
act and talk sweet to teachers
and classmates because we are
little cupcakes!
Kindergarten celebrated their first
book club. Damon Caldwell
(Woods), Jada Daigle (Jackson),
and Logan Brawner (Jackson) led
the group in a discussion about
the book Mama Panya's
Pancakes. After the group met,
we shared pancakes and syrup.
Our Christmas program was a
huge success! The children
worked as pairs learning lines
from the poem written by Mrs.
Ericia Guillory. We also did a
Gingerbread Man character
analysis, where we compared the
gingerbread man in a series of 5
books. The children also enjoyed
eating gingerbread man cookies
and graphing the part they bit off
first. The head of the cookie was
the winner!
Artist Comes To R.W.Vincent
As an exciting conclusion to our
comprehensive study of historical
master artists, our 1st and 2nd
grade SPARK and REACH students
created a masterpiece of their
own. We invited local artist,
Chelle Martin, to design a
Louisiana themed painting in
Pablo Picasso’s cubist style. It was
a wonderful opportunity for
students to demonstrate their
knowledge of artistic style, while
learning technique and solidifying
an appreciation of art. Student
artwork will be judged and
selected pieces will be featured at
the Henning Cultural Center in the
spring!
Fourth Grade Gets Slimey
Fourth grade students investigated the properties of solids and liquids by making “oobleck” a substance with properties of a liquid and a soilid.
Third Grade Branches Out
The third graders in Mrs. Hawkins's class have been busy studying the Louisiana State Government. They create a Branches of Government mobile using actual "branches". The students all had fun, and learned about our state government in the process.
Class News
First Grade is In Shape
In first grade we are learning all about shapes. We are learning the different attributes of two dimensional shapes so that we can compare and create them. These will help us in the upcoming lessons on three dimensional shapes.
Yearbooks are still available but they are
now $25. We are selling them until they
are sold out! Also, 5th grade ads are now
on sale. Remember this is in addition to the
cost of the yearbook. There is a limited
amount of ad space, so get your pictures in
by the January 31st ad deadline. The past
few years, we have run out of ad space and
yearbooks.
New Playground Equipment!
Our new playground equipment is
here and the finishing touches are
taking place so we can play. The
equipment was purchased with the
Sulphur bond issue and various
fundraisers the last few years. We
are excited to play on all the new
equipment!

Music Notes
We are having a great time in the music room this year. All the first-fifth grade classes worked hard on their Jambalaya of Louisiana Traditions program music and were able to show their parents and family members how well they sing! I was so proud of all of the children for learning their songs, participating in the readings, and working hard to put on a good performance. The music classes have been listening to special music when they come to the music room. During the second nine weeks we listened to “Autumn” from The Four Seasons, by Antonio Vivaldi; Concerto for Horn in E-Flat Major, the third movement: Finale:Allegro, by Franz Josef Haydn; and Pictures at an Exhibition: Promenade and Gnoemus, Modest Mussorgsky, and various Christmas carols by different composers. We’ve also been learning new skills, songs, and singing games in music while practicing familiar songs, games, and known elements of music as well as preparing new concepts and unknown elements of music. R. W. Vincent Elementary School’s HONOR CHORUS singers were selected in November. They are working to learn the four special honor chorus pieces on Wednesdays after school and will be going to Lake Charles-Boston Academy of Learning for rehearsals on Thursday, January 23 and January 30 from 3:30-5 pm, and all-day on Friday, January 31, to prepare for the honor chorus concert. The concert will be held at 11 o’clock in the morning in Bulber Auditorium on the McNeese Campus on Saturday, February 1. Congratulations to the singers who were chosen for this big honor: Bianca Barnes, Ortasia Harmon-Ceasar, Rylee Deshotel, Dale Johnson, Christofer Koonce, Maddi Maples, and Dante Williams. Our alternates are Ashlynn O’Quain and Gamma Thompson.
The R. W. Vincent Elementary School chorus for 4th and 5th graders, MUSIC MAKERS, began rehearsing on Tuesday, September 24. Rehearsals are held every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 2:55 until 3:45. We are getting ready for Festival! We could use some more singers, so any fourth or fifth grader who would like to join for the second semester should see Mrs. White right away for an information form. We had a new singer join our group today, and he did a fantastic job! Our MUSIC MAKERS mission statement is posted outside the music room!
