The Middle Passage This was the journey from West Africa
across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas.
Africans were crowded and chained cruelly aboard slave ships.
Diseases such as dysentery, malaria, and small pox killed thousands of Africans on this journey.
20 percent of those who took this journey did not survive.

Why were Africans used as slaves?
They did not get sick from many diseases in the Americas.
They could work in hot weather.

Plantations
Many slaves were brought to work on plantations.
A plantation is a farm that grows only one crop (examples are cotton and tobacco).

Slave Life
Slaves worked in the fields, in the house, or did anything else their master told them to do. They worked up to 18 hours a day.
They were not allowed to learn to read or write.
They were forbidden to own property.

Slave Homes Slaves often lived
in small log cabins with dirt floors. They were cold and dirty.

Punishments If a slave ran away and
were caught they might have to wear a neck ring.
If they continued to run away they might have a hand or foot removed.
Many slaves were whipped for disobeying their masters.
