Fall 2012, Vol. 5, Issue 1
Students, although we know you don’t want to hear it, sometime soon you will be graduating from JMU with a degree from the School of
Hospitality, Sport & Recreation Management (SHSRM). Seeking the
perfect internship and the ideal first job is daunting, but because you
have selected SHSRM you will be walking into these opportunities on the shoulders of giants. You will be joining a distinguished group of
alumni who are not only very proud of their degree from JMU, but also
want to give back to you. As you peruse the newsletter, you may no-tice a number of these alumni speaking in various classes across both
curriculums. Increasingly, alumni are hiring JMU graduates from our
program. For example, the Washington Redskins currently employ a number of graduates in both disciplines.
We encourage you to stay in touch with current faculty and to network
with alumni through LinkedIn and other social media sites. Network-ing is such a powerful tool as you never know how one connection may
lead to another. Both programs within the SHSRM offer a number of net-
working opportunities at industry conferences. For example, SHSRM stu-dents have attended or will be attending conferences such as the Sport Industry Networking Conference (SINC), Club Man-
agers Association of America (CMAA) Student Conference, NCAA Conference, TEAMS Conference, National Intramural
Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Conference, Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) Confer-ence, National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) Conference and others.
Dr. Reg Foucar-Szocki was recently named the winner of the 2012 Lifetime
Academic Achievement Award by the Michigan State University School of
Hospitality. He was recognized for his total body of accomplishments, includ-
ing classroom work, professional development activities, and volunteer out-
reach in the community. His wife, Diane, who teaches in the JMU College of
Education, and mother, Theresa Szocki, attended the celebration, which was
held on Aug. 2 during the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Insti-
tutional Education Conference in Providence, RI.

In 1984, Chef Rodney (JMU ‘09) received a football scholar-
ship to James Madison University where he achieved a bache-
lors degree in Hospitality. Rodney set a JMU football single
game record of 266 all-purpose yards, averaged 21.5 yards per
reception and 26.9 yards per kick return for the season, all
while carrying the football like a loaf of bread.
Rodney went on and refined his culinary skills at the award
winning La Fourchette Restaurant in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
La Fourchette was voted one of Gourmet Magazine’s top five
tables in the Philadelphia area from 1995-97. Rodney then
joined the Ritz Carlton Philadelphia team from 1997-1999.
Rodney joined the Paris-based Hotel Sofitel Philadelphia as
the first Chef de Cuisine (Restaurant Chef) of Chez Colette
before its May 2000 opening.
Chef Rodney also opened award winning Chez Gabrielle in
New York City and Le Architeche in Chicago during his ten-
ure with the Sofitel. “The Color of Food” is Rodney’s passion
and you can learn more about The Color of Food by visiting
their website at http://thecoloroffood.com. This October, Rod-
ney met with students from the HM/SRM 201 Foundation

NSMH — National Society of Minorities in Hospitality
JMU NSMH is ready to make a difference in our members’ lives. After a wonderful summer filled with internships
and jobs in multiple facets of the hospitality industry, we hope to use our experiences and connections to further the
impact we can make on our members, for their present and future.
The National Society of Minorities in Hospitality is looking forward to attending the 24th National Conference, which is being
held in Orlando, Florida from February 21-24, 2013. We look forward to exploring the diverse set of interests our members
have by visiting and learning from facilities nearby.
Through social events, we will build bonds and friendships to promote an energetic and comfortable culture that will foster per-
sonal and professional growth. If you have an interest in NSMH, whether in terms of becoming a member, or coming to speak
and share experiences, we would love to hear from you! Club e-mail: [email protected]
JMU’s CMAA returns this Fall following a busy summer season. Our president, Me-
gan Crosby, was an intern at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland. She
and member, Rachel Berry, volunteered at the Professional CMAA Virginia’s Chap-
ter’s Annual Golf Tournament in August. The professional chapter rewards this service with a donation
to the student chapter. Some events that the chapter is executing this year include a City Club Tour to
Cosmos Club, Sulgrave Club, and the University Club on October 13. This club tour highlights three of
the finest clubs in the Washington D.C. area.
We are planning an internship fair during the spring semester and monthly chapter meetings to enhance
our membership. CMAA is dedicated towards the professional development of its members in and out of
the club industry. If you would like to be involved with the JMU CMAA chapter please email
[email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you!
Thanks to Peter Lovelace (HTM, ‘06) who coordinated the trip, and the wonderful professionals of the CMAA National Chap-
ter, our JMU CMAA Student Chapter (along with our Club and Resorts Class students) toured the Cosmos Club, The Univer-
sity Club and Sulgrave Club on Saturday, October 13th. The full day tour included lunch at Cosmos followed by historical and
operational tours of the three clubs. Our students had an amazing day thanks to Peter, David Conroy (University), JMU Alum
Carolyn Rehman (University), Matt Moyer (Sulgrave) and the docents and staff at Cosmos. They learned about the club world
from the experience of a group of outstanding professionals. JMU and our students are grateful to our club hosts for this event.

PCMA — Professional Convention Management
Members of PCMA are usually interested in hospitality, event/meeting planning, wedding planning, sport manage-
ment, incentive travel programs, sales and marketing, and Convention & Visitors Bureaus. PCMA allows students to meet and network with professionals in the industry. We incorporate guest speakers at various meetings and
have traveled to the annual Capital Chapter Conference held in Washington DC, as well as the National Confer-
ence that will be held in Orlando, Florida this year.
PCMA offers educational programs that include resume-building workshops, etiquette dinners, internship/job search seminars,
the Hospitality Student Conference held in the Spring Semester, and much, much more.
PCMA strives to serve the JMU community as well as reach out to the Harrisonburg community by working concessions for
football games, volunteering for the local SPCA animal shelter, and Volunteering at Our Community Place (OCP). There are so
many opportunities for members to have fun and stay involved by traveling and touring vineyards in the Shenandoah Valley, tak-
ing hiking trips, going pumpkin picking, and attending the School of Hospitality Semi-Formal organized by PCMA members.
This student run organization has been awarded “Student Chapter of the Year” for its dedication and commitment to deliver su-
perior and innovative education, networking opportunities, and experience, as well as promoting the value of their student mem-
bers to the professional convention management community. If you are a student interested in joining, attend PCMA bi-weekly
meetings held in Godwin room 382 on Tuesdays at 6:00 pm! Please contact us by email at [email protected].

Each semester, several hospitality companies send representatives to the School to recruit students for
permanent and summer employment opportunities. Marriott and Hyatt were on cam-
pus in October 2012 to offer information sessions followed by interviews held the
following day. To be considered for an on campus interview, students posted their resume and applied
online. Only seniors were considered this Fall, but the good news is that they will come back and interview
for internships in Spring 2013. During the JMU Fall Career Fair there were hospitality companies recruiting on campus. The
next JMU Spring Career & Internship Fair will be held February 25, 2013 and we are expecting even more. Thanks to our many
partners in the hospitality industry who sponsor our program through recruiting our students on campus! Thank you to all those
students who have actively participated!

Want to create a QR Code?
Do you want to create your own QR Code?
With the increased usage of smart phones, QR codes are very
trendy and are seen many places, including consumer market
products, personal websites (e.g. LinkedIn profiles) and online
resumes. The phrase “scan for quick web access” can be added
around this code. One of the latest trends is to use these within
resumes, portfolios and even business cards.
If you are interested in creating a QR code (not the old UPC’s
bar codes) for your next poster, flyer, newsletter or business
card, it’s easy. Within this website you can simply type a word
or a website and it will automatically translate into a QR code:

and practitioners in the field of disability sport with the goal
of allowing both sides to work together more efficiently in
the future. Upon returning to JMU, Dr. Pate used online live
broadcasts of the Paralympic Games in the SRM 242 course
to facilitate discussions about who plays sport and the stere-
otypes that may exist.
The HM/SRM201 Foundations courses during the Fall se-
mester featured guest speakers who are professionals repre-senting various industry segments of the industry. These pro-
fessionals shared their career successes (and failures) and
discussed both opportunities and challenges for those enter-
ing the workplace. Learning from these professional is a wonderful opportunity for SHSRM students to begin their
professional network. This semester’s speakers include:
• Chad O’Neil Sr., Director of Global Room Operations from Marriott
• Morris Peltz, from the Staunton Augusta YMCA
• Peter Lovelace (HTM’06), Director of Operations, Be-

During the recent Fall Career Fair, Ms. Chelsea Brown from Cvent provided information about careers with her organization. Cvent has hired 23 recent college graduates from James Madison University over the past few years. Many of our JMU alumni
move into senior roles and become Team Leads and Managers of divisions.
During the same week as the Career Fair, Ms. Amy Remmer (Communication Studies, ‘11) spoke to students in the Hotel Oper-ations and Hospitality Technology courses. She currently works as a Product Consultant for Cvent. Amy informed students that
electronic lead management is a huge part of the industry and how imperative it is to learn how to become efficient using these
tools, specifically for those looking to work for a venue. Most importantly, she suggests learning how to move from a face-to-
face selling strategy to an online strategy. It was a great learning experience for our students and several of them had the oppor-
tunity to become Cvent Certified (planner-side focus) .
Company Overview: Cvent (www.cvent.com) is a pre-IPO technol-
ogy company based out of the Washington, DC area, and the
world’s largest event management software firm with 1,100 em-
ployees and 10,000 clients.

Fall 2012 Theme Dinners
Fall 2012 Page 11
What exactly is a theme dinner?
Students majoring in Hospitality Management have the privilege of putting on an event for friends and family to show off all of the skills they have acquired through their four years at JMU. Each team of six students began planning for their theme dinner in
January 2012. They became managers the day of the event and got to experience and execute the event first hand. These events
serve 100-200 guests with a several thousand dollar budget and employ a staff of 40-50 HTM underclassmen and other volun-
teers. During the Fall semester there were three theme dinners: Wizard of Oz, Triple Crown and Harvest Festival

The School of Hospitality Business’s Alumni Association established its Lifetime Academic Achievement Award in 2008 to honor alumni whose lifetime careers in the academy have had a
lasting and significant impact on hospitality education and those who study and teach it.
Reg has been with JMU since 1989. He served as the HTM Program Director, and as the J.W.
Marriott professor and academic unit head from 1996 through 2005. He currently teaches in the School of Hospitality, Sport, and Recreation Management. Reg recognizes the importance of
spending time in the industry; he has completed 12 summer internships/externships over the past
23 years. He also served as president and chairman of the board for the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education from 1999 to 2001. He is the founding associate edi-
tor of Housteur magazine. He earned his master’s at the State University of College of New York,
and his Ed.D. from Syracuse University.
Reg says, “I am truly honored and humbled to receive this award. Being one of the recipients is
truly a most special time for me, my family, and my colleagues at JMU.” He remembers, “As a
kid growing up in western New York I was blessed to have parents who believed in learning. Via their sacrifice I was able to attend a New England Prep School and then move on to MSU. I
am very proud that my grandfather was in the hospitality business running a bar and grill in my
hometown and one of my uncles had a ‘beer joint.’
“I learned firsthand from my mother, Theresa, what it means to love what you do, and give
back. In her 50+ years of service to churches and missions she has raised millions of dollars via
card parties, festivals, raffles and various ways of generating funds. I am happy to say she was able to take off work to be with us today — she currently works at the deli four or five days a week
back in Silver Creek, New York as a soon-to-be 84-year-old.”
Congratulations, Dr. Foucar-Szocki!
JMU Outreach & Engagement
JMU Outreach & Engagement serves nontraditional students with degree completion, certificate
programs, off-campus degree programs, workforce development and community engagement. The
Adult Degree Program (ADP), provides adults over 23 years old with the opportunity to continue
their education in a program that addresses individualized needs, goals, and time schedules. The
program recognizes that traditional, highly structured four-year degree programs do not always ac-
commodate the educational needs or lifestyles of adults. By design, the Adult Degree Program has
no prescribed curriculum. JMU faculty members help each student create an individualized pro-
gram that incorporates a professional core concentration of at least 30 credit hours and includes all
the elements necessary to earn a bachelor's degree. Recently, we have begun offering modules, or
sets of courses offered online, that students can choose to build their concentration rather than se-
lecting from the overwhelming number of courses available across the university. One of those
modules is in Hospitality Studies, and ADP students are taking the first courses in that module this
semester. HM 211 and HM 330 are being offered this fall semester, and many
students who are just getting started in the program are adding this set of courses
in Hospitality Studies to their program plans. Outreach & Engagement is de-
lighted to be able to offer this exciting, innovative content to these students
thanks to the faculty in Hospitality Management!
