Zissis Samaras is Full Professor and Director of the Lab of Applied Thermodynamics (LAT), Dept.
of Mechanical Engineering, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece. His research work deals
primarily with engine and vehicle emissions testing and modeling and he has carried out a wide
range of projects on modeling emissions from internal combustion engines. Dr. Samaras was
involved in the development, testing and large-scale evaluation of Diesel particulate filters. He was
vice chairman of the management committee of COST action 319 on the Estimation of Exhaust Gas
Emissions and for many years co-Leader on behalf of the European Environment Agency of the

Member and Vice Chairman of the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council
(ERTRAC) on "Energy, Environment and Resources". He has provided expert advice to a number
of organisations and private sector customers, including the European Commission, the European
Environment Agency, the World Bank the Greek Ministry of Environment, Rhône-Poulenc, ACEA,
Concawe, Toyota Motor Europe. He has participated in the organizing and scientific committees of
several international conferences such as Transport and Air Pollution (since 1992) and Transport
Research Arena (since 2012). He is member of the Editorial Board of Energies and he served as

D. Contribution to Software Develpoment
1. COPERT. A program that aims at the calculation of air pollutant emissions from road transport.
COPERT calculations are consistent with the “Detailed Methodology” of the EMEP/CORINAIR
Atmospheric Emissions Inventory Guidebook, Methodology for the calculation of exhaust emissions –
SNAPs 070100-070500, NFRs 1A3bi-iv. It is a highly appreciated software from the researchers of the
field and has been extensively used in emission trends analysis, in regional and local scale air quality
modeling, for regulatory impact assessments and human exposure modeling. Scopus gives more than
170 documents which cite COPERT (143 of them articles in journals and books).
2. AXISUITE ®. A modular software for the simulation of exhaust aftertreatment devices and systems.
The software has a broad range of applications in the development and optimization of exhaust systems,
from investigating the effect of DPF shape on partial regeneraton performance, to optimizing urea
injection strategy in a complicated exhaust system. AXISUITE is trusted by the leading OEMs, EAT
suppliers and Universities around the globe.
