Serials Cataloging with RDA
What is a serial?
A resource • issued in successive parts• usually bearing numbering• that has no predetermined conclusion (e.g., a
periodical, a monographic series, a newspaper).
Includes resources that exhibit characteristics of serials, such as successive issues, numbering and frequency, but whose duration is limited (e.g., newsletters of events) and reproductions of serials.
What’s the same in RDA?

Preferred Source of Information
• Preferred source of information– Title page, title sheet, title card
• Alternative rule– If the resource consists of microform or computer images,
use an eye-readable label bearing a title that is permanently printed on or affixed to the resource
• LC-PCC PS– Don’t apply the alternative for MF– Chief source for MF is the original title source– Chief source for direct access ER is eye-readable label
