Wood Green School - New Uniform Guide
September 2016
New Uniform from September 2016
Following the recent consultation a new uniform is being introduced from September 2016. The response showed that almost 80% of parents were in
favour of the new uniform.
As a school we feel that uniform is important as it helps young people with their feeling of belonging to our Wood Green community. We believe
that young people should be free from the pressures of having to wear designer labels at school and parents should be free from having to buy them.
Uniform helps all our students be equal in our community. We want students to come to school in professional looking uniform so that they are in the
mind-set that Wood Green is a place to work hard and succeed. We would therefore ask for your cooperation in making sure that the guidelines are
followed when buying your child's uniform.

School Uniform rules and guidance
As a school, we feel that uniform important as it helps young people with their feeling of belonging to our Wood Green community. We believe
that young people should be free from the pressures of having to wear designer labels at school and parents should be free from having to buy them.
Uniform helps all our students be equals in our community.
Our uniform is practical, hard wearing and, as far as possible, reasonably priced. We want students to come to school in professional looking uniform so
that they are in the mind-set that Wood Green is a place to work hard and succeed. We would therefore ask for your cooperation in making sure that
the guidelines on style and colour are followed when buying your child's uniform.
The following pages have specific guidance on what uniform is and isn’t acceptable for shoes, trousers, skirts, coats, jewellery, hair and make-up. These
rules are school policy and will be strictly enforced. We do not believe that various forms of leisure wear such as jeans, trainers or hoodies are
appropriate for the hard working environment that Wood Green School is. Therefore, we are setting uniform rules that will support students in our
LEARN WELL school values. Please note the school will make the final decision on the appropriateness of any item of uniform.
Jewellery The only jewellery that is allowed is one set of stud earrings and a watch. There must be no rings, bracelets of any kind
or facial piercings, including nose studs, lip piercings and eyebrow piercings.
Hair and Makeup Hair must be one natural colour and not extreme. Boys must be clean shaven. The Headteacher reserves the right to
make the final decision on what is an acceptable haircut. If you are in any doubt about whether a particular hairstyle
may be considered extreme, please contact your child’s HoLC. Make up must be light, in neutral colours and not
extreme. Again, the Headteacher reserves the right to make the final decision on what is acceptable with regards to
make up. Tattoos are not allowed.
Jackets Jackets should be in a neutral colour and provide protection from the British weather. Hooded tops are not permitted
as they do not provide adequate protection from the elements. Denim jackets are also not permitted. Hooded tops and
denim jackets will be confiscated from students and parents will be asked to collect them from the main office.
Shirts Shirts should be tucked into skirts and trousers as this promotes the professional appearance we expect from our
students.
School Trousers – Girls
Please see below a list of trousers which have been agreed as suitable for girls to wear to school in order for them to be
compliant with our uniform policy. The trousers listed below are deemed to be appropriate for school as they are plain
black and professional looking. This means trousers that look like jeans, jeggings or any other type of trousers that do
not match the styles listed below are not allowed. The trousers must not have a pair of patch pockets on the rear.
Trousers should be a tailored plain black design. This means no jeans or trousers with jeans features. This means they
should not have rivet details or jean like stitching. Leggings, cargo pants, chinos or tracksuit bottoms are also not
allowed.
We do not believe it is appropriate for girls to wear trousers with the label ‘Miss Sexy’ on them. Skin tight trousers are
not acceptable.
The list below is not exhaustive but gives examples of acceptable styles. If in doubt, please check with us.

they promote a professional looking appearance and/or are items of fashion.
Short, jersey fabric tight skirts.
Mini skirts.
Black denim pencil skirts.
School shoes Last year, we tightened up the rules on what was and was not acceptable shoes for schools. We need to be even clearer
on what is and is not acceptable and have tightened up the rules again. We want to promote a professional looking
appearance for students at school and ensure that school uniform is not subject to changing fashions. We believe
that young people should be free from the pressures of having to wear designer labels at school and parents should be
free from having to buy them.
School shoes should be plain black, leather or leather style shoes without any brand name anywhere on them. No
trainers, plimsolls, dolly shoes or high heels are allowed as they are either not appropriate for the British weather or
are fashion items.
There should be no branded sportswear name on any shoes. This means no Converse, Vans, Lonsdale, Adidas, Nike or
any other branded sports/leisure wear leather trainer. Velcro fastening shoes must have no sportswear logo. This year,
we will not allow Converse, Vans or any other type of trainer with the labels removed.
The examples above are not meant to present an exhaustive list but should go some way to making it clear what styles
are acceptable. Similarly, the examples below show what are not acceptable, with or without labels. Please make sure
your child does not wear shoes like these, or similar styles as these are no longer allowed in any form.
School is the final arbiter of the suitability of any item of clothing and footwear.
The school reserves the right to challenge pupils who do not wear the correct uniform and to inform parents immediately.
