SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
IMPLEMENTATION
Rita S. ReyesSSP – IV/Discussant
And what is it exactly we aim to achieve? It is easy to fixate on the obvious with regard to the K to 12 Basic Education Program. Yes, together we will make early childhood education a reality for all Filipinos and not just for those who can afford to pay. Yes, together we will fundamentally reform the basic education curriculum so that our learners have a true mastery of basic competencies and a more deliberate path to the world of work and entrepreneurship or are better prepared for higher learning.
Br. Armin F. Luistro, FSCSecretaryDepartment of Education
COMPARISON OF THE OLD CURRICULUM AND
K TO 12 EDUCATION
K TO 12 CURRICULUM 2012The K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum is geared towards the development of holistically developed Filipino with 21st Century skills who is ready for employment, entrepreneurship, middle skills, middle level skills development and higher education upon graduation.
2010 SECONDARY EDUCATION CURRICULUMThe 2010 Secondary Education Curriculum (SEC) is the revised 2002 BEC incorporating Understanding by Design (UbD) which seeks to contribute to functional literacy for all and the development of 21st Century core skills needed for global competitiveness.
BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM (BEC) 2002BEC is restructuring of the NESC (1983) and the NESC (1989) in order to raise the quality of Filipino Learners and graduates and empower them for lifelong learning.

Skills
Senior High School is two years of specialized upper secondary education; students may choose a career track based on aptitude, interests and school capacity. The choice of career track will define the content of the subjects a student take in Grades 11 and 12. These subjects fall under the Core Curriculum or Career Pathways.
GEARING UP FOR THE FUTURE (Senior High School)
There are six subjects under the Core Curriculum. These are Humanities, Languages (English and/or Filipino), Math, Philosophy, Science and Social Sciences. Current content from some General Education subjects are embedded in the SHS Curriculum.
CORE CURRICULUM
CAREER PATHWAYS
Each student in Senior High School can choose among different tracks:
Students undergo On – the – Job Training or immersion, which may include earn – while – you learn opportunities, to provide them relevant exposure and actual experience in their chosen track.
TVET (Technical Vocational
Education & Training) National
Certificate
After finishing Grade 10, a student can obtain Certificates of Competency (COC) or a National Certificate Level (NC I). After finishing a Technical Vocational Track in Grade 12, a student may obtain a National Certificate Level II (NC II), provided he/she passes the competency based assessment of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
NC I and NC II improves employability of graduates in fields like Agriculture, Electronics and Trade.
NURTURING THE HOLISTICALLY DEVELOPED FILIPINO (COLLEGE AND
LIVELIHOOD READINESS, 21ST CENTURY SKILLS)
After going through Kindergarten, the enhanced Elementary and Junior Curriculum, and a specialized Senior High Program, every K to 12 graduate will be ready to go into different paths – may it be further education, employment, or entrepreneurship.

The figures for public schools are based on the EBEIS actual student enrolment for SYs 2007-2013. Cohort survival and transition rates were used to determine the projected number of students who will enrol in SHS for SY 2016 and SY 2017. Since there is limited data on private school enrolment, the figures in this table used another study on SHS which ADB's Absorptive Capacity Study. ADB's study used private secondary school student enrolment for SY 2010 to project SHS population.
