Advanced Navigation Course – 21st May
A great follow up course for those who have already done a beginners navigation
course with the C/W section or have a basic knowledge of map and compass skills,
pacing and terrain selection. We will meet at Zeroes Café on the corner of Cashmere
and Valley road at 8am for a takeaway coffee and carpooling if required( please bring
some cash to give to your drivers for fuel reimbursement) or at 9am at the entrance of
Orton Bradley Park in Charteris Bay. We will head up the track to Mt Herbert and
spend the day working along to Mt Fitzgerald with the skills you already know or
revising and building on what you learnt on the beginners course. The bulk of the day
will be spent moving from point to point using your skills you have previously been
taught and a reasonable level of fitness is required and you will need to have the usual
tramping equipment if on a day walk – good sturdy tramping boots, a reasonable size
day pack and pack liner, warm clothing – top and bottom layers, fleece or down jacket,
warm hat and gloves, rain coat and over trousers, sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses,
personal medication and toilet paper, small note book and pencil or pen, compass and
map of the area( can be provided if requested ), lunch, snack and energy food,a
minimum of 1.5 litres of water and a thermos for hot drinks is optional and a spare set
of clothes and shoes for the return home. We will be returning to Orton Bradley for
5pm. The course will go ahead in all but the worst weather. This course is open to both
members and non members at a cost of $25 for members and $40 for non members and
is limited to 8 students only so don’t miss out! Please contact Clayton on
[email protected] with your full name and experience level – this course IS
NOT suitable for beginners and WILL NOT be teaching the use of a GPS.
Tasman Glacier Climbing Trip – 26th December – 3rd January
The Upper Tasman Glacier is home to
some of the most impressive summits in
the Mount Cook National Park. Peaks
such as Elie de Beaumont, Malte Brun,
The Minarets and De La Beche line either
side of the Tasman Valley and provide
excellent climbing opportunities for those
who venture to its upper reaches. The
plan on this climbing trip will be to fly to
the head of the Tasman Glacier where
we will be spending the week climbing
some of the National Park's significant
peaks before an enjoyable walk out via the Tasman Glacier. Sleeping arrangements will
include staying in huts and bivvying. As numbers for this climbing trip are limited all

climbers must pay flight costs (approximately $150) in advance to reserve their places.
All climbers also should have sound NZ mountaineering skills such as experience with
glacier travel, building snow anchors and a solid crampon/ice axe technique.
If interested please contact Matt at [email protected]

15th and 16th ) And August 5th-6th ( back up weekend August 26th and 27th ).

when applying but once the registration form is sent back to you, you will have seven
days to return the completed form and make payment of the course fee ($200), and be a

To be able to car pool with the group from Christchurch (NO EXCEPTIONS), no later
than 5.15pm on the Friday evening of the course you choose (we will not accept
individuals travelling on their own, in their own time to meet the group in Arthurs Pass
as this is for health and safety reasons of winter driving conditions, and we also have 2
hours of lessons to teach on the Friday evening, starting at 7.30pm sharp at the NZAC
house in Arthurs Pass).
An equipment check (a list will be sent out with the registration form), will be required
for all students, well before the course date (an evening to be arranged once registered)
By registering for the course you must be available for the back up weekend as this not
6

Chairperson’s Update

-Craig Hosking
Section monthly meeting
Our March speaker Jack Grinstead spoke of his adventurous journey to record the
longest (and probably most epic) climb on the Faroe Islands, great talk where I think
everyone in the room learnt a little more and Faroe Islands. He also engaged the
audience with the use of food based rewards for questions and answers, ingenious! We
wish Jack all the best for his next climbing objectives.
Crag update
Kudos to those who have helped out with the Fantasy Factory Crag Repair day on the
29th April. By the time you read this there should be a bunch of photos showing the
great work that has been done by these rock loving volunteers.
Arthurs Pass Lodge
Now has a new kitchen window big thanks to Keith Dekkers for his time and skills
installing this. Lawns and weed wacking was also done recently by John Henson and
Markus Milne. Sounds like it’s all ready for winter, bring on the snow!
Committee position – Chairperson
Due to upcoming commitments it’s time for a new fresh-faced Chairperson to take over
in May. Coming up nigh 3 years in this role it’s been a pleasure to work with the fellow
committee members who do all the grunt work. The Chairperson position requires a
good friendly communicator, organised, email savvy and most importantly having the
ability to delegate workload evenly amongst other committee members. The main
commitment is chairing the section committee (currently held at Speights Alehouse –
Tower Junction) once a month every Monday following a section talk. If you’d like to
know more about this rewarding position please email [email protected]
Committee position – Section Evenings
After being involved in organising our great selection of section talks for the last 4
years Nina Dickerhof is stepping down from this position in the near future. This role
requires someone with good planning skills to find speakers for meetings. If you’re
interested in this role either talk to me [email protected] or Nina herself
Mount Tasman

Arthur Collins, Rod Kirkwood and Hamish
Dunn climbed Mount Tasman on March 9th
via the North Shoulder route from a bivvy
on Marcel Col. Marcel Col was accessed
from the true left of the ice fall and the ice
cliffs above Engineer Col were skirted by a
narrow ramp heading out towards Syme
Ridge. Conditions were firm and it took
about 4 1/2 hours from Marcel Col to the
summit and slightly longer to descend.
As the weather was settled they spent
another afternoon and night at Marcel Col
then descended in good firm travel
conditions to Pioneer.

Hut log books
The New Zealand Alpine Club greatly values its hut log books and over the years these
have been added to the NZAC Collection at the Hocken Archives. Many have gone
missing from huts over the years however and that leaves us with gaps in our history
that we would like to fill.
Should you find any old hut log books stored and forgotten we would greatly like to
see them returned. Even if the log books aren’t strictly from NZAC huts, better they
are archived than lost. Image featured is from the Chancellor Hut Log Book 1940-
1956.
Please send through to Margaret McMahon, NZAC, PO Box 786, Christchurch 8140 as
we need to properly catalogue them before they are sent to the Hocken for indexing.

We haven’t found definitive proof for the continued existence of the South Island
kōkako yet, but the incentive to do so has been doubled to NZ$10,000!
As a result of our reward campaign in January,
we received dozens of reports of recent and not
so recent possible encounters, a fair few of
which are likely to have been our missing
kōkako.
I’ve attached our press release and new reward
poster and we’d like to encourage you to
continue to keep your ears and eyes open for
any sign of the South Island kōkako while out
in native forests in the South and Stewart
Islands and to report any possible encounters
through our website:

Registrations for the 2017 MSC Southern Hemisphere Alpine Conference (SHAC)
are now open
Helping to shape the future of alpine snow safety, SHAC has three key objectives:
To provide a platform for people interested in alpine snow environments to share ideas,
network and enhance their knowledge and practical skills.
To build strong partnerships that connect our alpine community together.
To generate opportunities to develop future strategies and collaborations that help more
people stay safe in the outdoors.
SHAC Programme
A diverse programme will engage delegates in a mix of interactive sessions:
plenary/keynotes and presentations to share ideas and thought leadership, practical
workshops to develop new skills and enhanced capabilities, and panel discussions that
provide a platform for exchange and debate.
SHAC Alpine Gala Dinner
7pm Saturday - Join conference delegates, presenters and our international guests for a
social evening of fine food and fascinating stories. An opportunity to catch-up with

Trip guidelines An important part of the NZAC is volunteer organised trips. Many members will have had their first alpine
experiences on club trips. And many will also have organised trips, helping other members enjoy our alpine
environment. If you're thinking of joining or organising a trip, here are some guidelines on what to expect.
Responsibilities of a Trip Participant
• You are responsible for your own safety. If you are uncomfortable with any situation it is up to you to let your
Trip organiser know straight away.
• Be prepared to drive or pay transport costs (petrol, wear and tear) as determined by the Trip organiser.
• Make sure you are as fit and healthy as possible.
• Make sure you have a clear idea of the trip's goals and what will be required of you to achieve those goals.
Obtain a relevant map and know where you are going, what type of terrain is involved, what gear you will
need and the knowledge of how to use it.
• Be honest to your Trip Organiser about how much experience you have and accept that the Trip Organiser
might not accept you on the trip if he/she thinks you are not experienced enough.
• Get in contact with the Trip Organiser as soon as you are confident that you want to go on the trip.
• If you discover that you cannot go on the trip then let the Trip Organiser know as soon as possible so that
another person can take your place.
• Read, understand and return the signed copy of the NZAC waiver form to the Trip Organiser.
Responsibilities of a Trip organiser
• Trips should be fun for everyone. They are not very hard to organise and can be very rewarding. Choose a
mountain, peak, hill, traverse, route, crag, or whatever and get out there and meet some keen club members!
• You cannot be responsible for the safety of every member of the group, but you should aim to empower every
group member with enough knowledge to make their own informed decisions about the proposed trip both
before and during the trip.
• Choose a realistic goal for the time available and give prospective group members an idea of the amount of
effort required to achieve the stated goal
• Set a group size limit based on your experience, the goal, time available and group fitness and experience.
• Let the group know what skills and equipment are needed when they sign up so that everyone is prepared.
• Provide the trip Participants with a copy of the NZAC waiver form and have them understand, sign and return
it to you in advance of the trip.
• Organise travel arrangements at the earliest opportunity and let everyone know how much they should expect
to pay for transport costs (petrol, wear and tear).
• Prepare detailed trip intentions and leave them with at least one responsible individual. The intentions should
include a latest return time/date which would trigger a search initiated by the responsible individual(s) and
involving the relevant authorities (Police, SAR, etc).
• If someone on the trip voices their concern about the situation it is up to you (with the help of the group) to
find a safe solution where possible. This may involve everyone turning around.
• Give priority to NZAC members
• Find someone on the trip to write an interesting trip report for the Section Newsletter.

· Books are generally to be returned within 2 months, but new purchases will be
expected to be returned within 1 month.
· DVDs are expected to be returned within 2 weeks.
When you are ready to return a book, email me.
John Roper-Lindsay - Librarian , [email protected], 021 395513

4) Email/text/phone me to arrange handover some other way
