In October-December, kelp reproductive tissue is mature and can be induced to release spores. The spores are released into a beaker and then allowed to settle on twine. They are grown out in a nursery for four weeks at which point they are taken to a field site.Photos: http://www.bim.ie/our-publications/aquaculture/Process: http://static.squarespace.com/static/52f23e95e4b0a96c7b53ad7c/t/52f78b0de4b0374e6a0a4da8/1391954701750/OceanApproved_KelpManualLowRez.pdf

Growth of AquacultureY axis in million tonnes.Aquaculture, and of note, aquatic plant aquaculture has grown significantly over the past 25 years. About 10 million tonnes of kelp are grown annually, mostly in China. Projects for cultivating kelp have started on the East Coast of the US, Ireland and Chile. Wild giant kelp has a long history of harvest in California, mostly by Kelco for gel products.Graph: http://www.thefishsite.com/articles/868/cultured-aquatic-species-japanese-kelp
