Overview of Thermal power plant
The general layout of thermal power plant consists of mainly four circuits, they are as below:
1. Coal and Ash circuit
2. Air and Gas circuit
3. Feed Water and Steam circuit
4. Cooling Water circuit

Distributed control system
• DCS is process state driven.
• Parallel ladder logic was its base.
• Confined to certain area.
• Operator has to make a request directly to
field I/O and get the response.
Drawbacks of DCS
• DCS was unable to provide information of the
run time process instantaneously and
continuously.
• Applicable only for short distance.
• Maintenance cost was more.
• DCS was less automated.
Why SCADA only ?
• The Ability to control the process from a remote place.
• The Ability to create logs and reports about system’s current and past state.
• The Ability to send necessary information to Engineers and operators in real-time.
What is SCADA ?
• SCADA is acronym for “Supervisory
Control And Data Acquisition”.
• SCADA is not just a hardware, neither a
software. It is a system as a combination of
special hardware, software and protocols.
Important terminologies in SCADASCADA Hardware- Field level instrumentation and control
devices
- Remote Terminal Units (RTUs)
- Master Terminal Unit or MTU (Also called The Master Station)
- Communication System
SCADA software
•Data Acquisition and Processing•Control•Man machine interface•Alarm handling•Logging and Archiving
How SCADA works ?
The measurement and control system of SCADA
has one master terminal unit (MTU) which could
be called the brain of the system and one or more
remote terminal units (RTU). The RTUs gather
the data locally and send them to the MTU
which then issues suitable commands to be
executed on site. A system of either standard or
customized software is used to collate, interpret
and manage the data.

Conclusion • The SCADA for thermal power plant allows the
owner of the plant not only to control and supervise the plant which is its features but also allows to operates the plant in the economical way.
• SCADA for thermal power plant overrides all the drawbacks of the conventional DCS based thermal power plant. It does not entertain more manual operations instead operates automatically hence overriding the human errors and minimizing the errors in the power plant operation.
