WELL-BRED JUVENILES SETFOR ARQANA
Arqana's Breeze-up Sale, scheduled for May 13-14, will be held
for the first time in Deauville, while renovation work at
Longchamp moves the French Guineas meeting to the
Normandy track on the day after the sale, May 15.
The sale has had plenty of top-class graduates advertise its
merits of late, including its most recent Group 1 star, Robin Of
Navan (Fr) (American Post), who won the G1 Criterium de
Saint-Cloud for Harry Dunlop after being purchased by Matt
Coleman of Anthony Stroud Bloodstock from the draft of Bansha
House Stables from last year's sale in Paris for i47,000.
The French Classics will doubtless be on the colt's agenda, but
Arqana already boasts a G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner in the
form of 2013 breeze-up graduate The Grey Gatsby (Ire)
(Mastercraftsman {Ire}), while another high-class alumni is Al
Shaqab Racing's GI Donn H. winner Mshawish (Medaglia d'Oro),
who heads to the G1 Dubai World Cup later this month.
This year's catalogue contains 133 2-year-olds, 81 of which are
eligible for the French owners' premiums scheme.
Brendan Holland's Grove Stud has topped the sale in the last
two years and its 10-strong consignment for 2016 includes the
sole Frankel (GB) filly to be consigned to a breeze-up sale so far.
Lot 68 is out of Ben Sangster's listed-winning mare Rose
Bonheur (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Cont. p2

Well-Bred Juveniles Set For Arqana Cont. from p1
Another Frankel juvenile appears in the Mocklershill draft as
lot 52. Out of the dual Group 3 winner Noelani (Ire) (Indian
Ridge {GB}), who is a sister to top sprinter Namid (Ire), the colt is
already an Arqana graduate, having been bought at the August
Sale by Willie Browne for i350,000.
Frankel's champion sire Galileo (Ire) is also responsible for two
colts in the sale,
including lot
122, the first
foal produced
by the multiple
group winner
Banimpire (Ire)
(Holy Roman
Emperor {Ire}),
who is also
among the
Mocklershill
offerings.
Coolmore sire Excelebration (Ire), who has his first 2-year-olds
racing this year, has six colts in the sale, while France's rising star
Siyouni (Fr) is represented by 12 2-year-olds.
"The entire Arqana team is particularly excited to host this sale
in Deauville for the first time," said Arqana President Eric
Hoyeau. "The combination with two stellar days of racing
featuring three Group 1 races on a bank holiday weekend forms
an extremely attractive event, both for our French and
international clientele. We are therefore particularly happy to
have assembled an outstanding bunch of colts and fillies thanks
to the support of our vendors, whose faith in this sale has been
rewarded year after year.@

DATE CHANGE FOR CRAVEN BREEZE The breeze show for the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale will
take place at Newmarket=s Rowley Mile Racecourse at 9 a.m.
Monday, Apr. 11, with the sale taking place after racing at
Newmarket the following two days, Apr. 12 and 13. The breeze
show traditionally takes place the Tuesday of Craven week, but
the sale=s schedule has been altered this year with the race
meeting reverting to three days.
BEST, JOHN FOUND GUILTY Trainer Jim Best and jockey Paul John have been found guilty
of charges in two cases where two National Hunt horses were
allegedly intentionally stopped in December. The horses
involved were Echo Brava (GB) (Proclamation {Ire}) racing at
Plumpton Dec. 14 and Missile Man (Ire) (Winged Love {Ire})
running at Towcester Dec. 17.
John, Best=s former conditional rider, was initially banned 14
days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures
aboard Echo Brava, but that ban was amended to two charges of
him intentionally doing so. Best has been found guilty of failing
in his "duty to secure the best possible placing" on two
occasions as well as "conduct prejudicial to horse racing in Great
Britain."
Penalties will be announced at a later date.
1) Horse you are most looking forward to seeing this season
(and why)?
BK: Moonlight Magic (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire})--unbeaten 3-year-
old trained by Jim Bolger. Two runs, two wins as a 2-year-old. By
Cape Cross, the sire of Sea the Stars (Ire) and Golden Horn (GB),
out of a half-sister to Galileo (Ire) and Sea the Stars. With a
pedigree like that, the sky=s the
limit and his trainer has form.
2) A stallion who could feature
prominently (doesn=t have to be
first season)?
BK: It has to be Galileo (Ire)--he
has some wonderful 3-year-old
fillies to star in the Classics and I
love to see his 2-year-olds appear,
usually from May onwards.
3) Positive change you would like
to see for the industry in 2016?
BK: That there is some realistic
movement towards a single set of medication rules that are
enforced globally. We have a global industry and it is not
sustainable that there are different standards applied in different
parts of the world.

BREEZERS TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT SHA TIN
A select group of 25 horses is set to breeze at Sha Tin
Racecourse Saturday ahead of next Friday evening's Hong Kong
International Sale.
All bar one are 3-year-old geldings purchased at yearling sales
in England, Ireland, France, Germany, Australia and New
Zealand by the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Mark Richards, who is
executive manager of the International Sale. The exception is lot
19, the 2-year-old Manhattan Rain (Aus) colt who is a
half-brother to Wandjina (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}). The G1 Australian
Guineas winner is now standing at Newgate Stud in the Hunter
Valley.
"When we bought him, Wandjina wasn't a Group 1 winner, so
that all helps," said Richards of the A$700,000 purchase from
last year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. "He's quite forward and
he's still a full horse so whoever buys him can make the decision
about his future stallion potential."
Fastnet Rock (Aus) is the best represented among the stallions
with four geldings in the catalogue--two Australian-breds and
two bought in Europe. The quartet includes lot 3, who is out of
Tashzara (Ire), an
Intikhab half-sister to
top-class miler
Excelebration (Ire)
(Exceed And Excel
{Aus}) and was
bought for
180,000gns at
Tattersalls in 2014.
Two sons of
O'Reilly (NZ) feature,
including a brother to the champion New Zealand 3-year-old
Alamosa (NZ), who is catalogued as lot 4.
Shamardal's prowess has been well advertised in Hong Kong
by his high-flying son Able Friend (Aus), and a German-bred
3-year-old by the Darley sire bought at Arqana's August Sale for
i180,000 is slated as lot 14. Out of the listed winner Nina
Celebre (Ire) (Peintre Celebre), the gelding's second and third
dams are both winners of the G1 Preis der Diana (German
Oaks).
Richards highlighted the sole representative of Showcasing
(GB) in the catalogue (lot 16), a full-brother to the James
Cassidy-trained dual Grade II winner Prize Exhibit (GB).
"Prize Exhibit had won one race when we bought this horse as
a yearling but then she went to America and has won three
graded stakes, which is a really nice update," he commented.
Tied into the BMW Hong Kong Derby meeting, which is set to
be run Sunday, Mar. 20, the sale has moved from its traditional
Saturday morning slot at Sha Tin to Friday evening.
"We've changed the format slightly this year," Richards
explained. "We used to run the sale in two parts but we wanted
to give people as much time as possible, so we're holding it on
Friday evening, similar to the Arc Sale and the Saturday evening
of Magic Millions. It will be under lights with supper and drinks--
hopefully it will be the stars under the stars."

Native New Yorker Effinex (Mineshaft) looks to make his mark

GI Santa Anita H. The Tri-Bone Stables colorbearer really came
into his own last term starting with a defeat of GISW stablemate
Wicked Strong (Hard Spun) in Aqueduct’s GIII Excelsior S. in the
spring of 2015. Pulled up in the GII Brooklyn H. a month later,
the dark bay beat out MGISW Tonalist (Tapit) by a head in the
GII Suburban H. July 4 and finished a respectable fourth behind
GI Breeders’ Cup Mile hero Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song) next
out in the GI Woodward S. Sept. 5. Third to Tonalist in the
GI Jockey Club Gold Cup Oct. 3, the Jimmy Jerkens pupil was the
only one attempting to run with Horse of the Year American
Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) when a respectable, but soundly
beaten second in the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic Oct. 31. Besting
defending champion Hoppertunity (Any Given Saturday) to earn
his first Grade I in the Clark H. at Churchill Nov. 27, the 5-year-
old will be piloted once again by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, who
was aboard for Effinex’s last two starts and has won the last
three renewals of this test.
"He looks wonderful coming off his layoff,” Smith told the

Smith continued, “He seems to have put some weight on, he's
training well, he's happy, and got over the track just beautiful
Tuesday morning [breezing a
bullet half-mile in :47.80]. If
that's any indication as to how
he's going to run, I guess he
should run extremely well."
Effinex’s biggest competition
looks like it will come from
former East Coast runner
Donworth (Tiznow), who
recently moved to the Doug O’Neill barn. Picked up by Reddam
Racing for $550,000 as part of the Regis Farm dispersal at
Keeneland November, the “TDN Rising Star” romped by 11
lengths in his final start for Graham Motion in Delaware’s
Stanton S. last June. Returning from that long layoff in this
venue’s GII San Antonio S. Feb. 6, the dark bay was a strong
third--beaten by just over a half-length--to Dubai bound
Hoppertunity and the reopposing Imperative (Bernardini), who
came running late to miss by just a nose last time. That Richard
Baltas trainee also finished second to Dortmund (Big Brown) in
the GIII Native Diver S. Nov. 28 and to 2014 Horse of the Year
California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) in the GII San Pasqual S. Jan. 9.
Todd Pletcher drops Starlight Racing and Skychai Racing’s
General a Rod (Roman Ruler) into the deep end off a
7 1/2-length allowance win in the slop at Gulfstream Jan. 28.
Winner of Tampa’s Challenger S. in his debut for the Pletcher
barn last year, the dark bay was given six months off after a
failed effort on grass in the GI Manhattan S. last June and was
sixth to stablemate Itsaknockout (Lemon Drop Kid) in his
Hallandale return on New Year’s Eve prior to his last out success.
The only Grade I winner in this field besides Effinex is Hronis
Racing’s Hard Aces (Hard Spun), who won the GI Gold Cup at
Santa Anita S. last June. Sixth in the GI Pacific Classic,
GI Awesome Again S. and Breeders’ Cup Classic, the bay was a
lackluster fourth in the San Pasqual and an equally dull fifth last
time in the San Antonio. His trainer John Sadler also saddles
Lanes End Racing’s Class Leader (Smart Strike), who enters off a
fourth-place finish on turf in the GII San Marcos S. Feb. 6.

Mshawish to Taylor Made cont.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to stand such an
exciting horse as Mshawish, and thankful to the entire Al Shaqab
Racing team,” said Ben Taylor, vice president of Taylor Made
Stallions. “It’s exciting because Mshawish has always been an
elite horse that's performed well all over the world, but he’s
really shown a different dimension on the dirt. He ran a 2 3/4 on
the [Ragozin] Sheets in the [GIII] Hals Hope [Jan. 9], and his win
in the GI Donn H.
established him as one of
the best dirt horses in the
world. Physically and
genetically, Mshawish is
really going to appeal to
breeders. He’s a
good-looking horse,
extremely sound, and will
be the most accomplished
son of leading sire Medaglia d’Oro to retire in America. The sky
is the limit for him the rest of this racing season, and beyond in
the breeding shed.”
Pletcher added, “Mshawish has always impressed me with his
versatility, high cruising speed, and neat ability to also have an
exciting turn of foot.”
Mshawish will continue to be owned and campaigned by Al
Shaqab and Pletcher throughout 2016, with his year-end goal
being the $5-million GI Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita. The
deal calls for a 50% syndication of Mshawish upon retirement,
with Al Shaqab retaining the other 50% of the horse. Cont. p5

“All of us at Al Shaqab are delighted that Mshawish will be
retired at the end of the season to stand at Taylor Made Farm,”
added Khalifa al Attiya, general manager of Al Shaqab Racing.
“He joins Khozan as our second horse to retire to stud duties in
the U.S. It is so important to us that we not only race good
horses, but that we also produce stallions. Therefore, we are
very proud that, in a relatively short period of time, we now
have six exciting young sires on our roster around the world,
with the hope of many more to come.”
Mshawish began his career in France, breaking his maiden in
his second career start before finishing second in the G3 Prix de
Guiche at Chantilly. Winner of Meydan’s 2014 G2 Zabeel Mile,
last term’s G1 Dubai Turf third-place finisher also captured the
2015 GII Ft. Lauderdale S. at Gulfstream Park.
Bred in Kentucky by OTIF 2007, Mshawish has a lifetime record
of 23-8-2-3 with earnings of $2,221,351. He went through the
ring three times--$25,000 KEENOV weanling; $10,000 KEESEP
yearling and a $219,589 Arqana Saint-Cloud May 2-Year-Old.
MSHAWISH FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS
AHEAD OF WORLD CUP by Alan Carasso
Al Shaqab Racing’s Mshawish (Medaglia d’Oro), who became a
Grade I winner on multiple surfaces with a smashing victory in
the Donn H. Feb. 6, turned in his final piece of work ahead of the
Mar. 26 G1 Dubai World Cup at trainer Todd Pletcher’s Palm
Beach Downs base. Working on his own, the 6-year-old was
timed in :58.87, with a final quarter-mile in :22.91 (video),
according to Al Shaqab U.S. Racing Advisor Bradley Weisbord.
“He worked just tremendously, really could not have gone any
better,” Weisbord enthused. “Todd asked [exercise rider] Nick
[Rush] to drop his hands for the final sixteenth of a mile and let
him finish. He went galloped out on his own in 1:11 2/5 and 1:24
4/5, which would be the fastest seven furlongs ever recorded at
Palm Beach Downs by more than a full second, according to
Todd. On a scale of one to 10, he worked 200. What was so
impressive was not the time, but rather the way he did it.”
Mshawish will be making his third straight appearance on
World Cup night, having finished a creditable fourth for trainer
Mikel Delzangles in the 2014 G1 Dubai Duty Free S. and third,
despite a foot issue, behind Solow (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) in the
same race--now named the Dubai Turf--last March. In the World
Cup, Mshawish will have to deal with the likes of Horse of the
Year California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) and Frosted (Tapit), but
the Al Shaqab team is looking forward to the challenge ahead.
“We’re excited, we wouldn’t trade places with anybody,”
Weisbord commented. Cont. p6
HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 6 OF 16 • THETDN.COM SATURDAY • MAR. 12, 2016
“Frosted and California Chrome have a bit of an advantage in
that they each prepped over there, but we chose to go a
different direction. We weren’t a Grade I winner [on dirt], so we
went after the Donn H. and decided to worry about Dubai later,
since the Donn was a stallion-making race for us.
He added, “He has come out of [the Donn] great, the spacing
between the races is the same as last year, when he went over
for the Dubai Turf and there is no reason right now that he
shouldn’t run his A+ race.”
Winner of the GI Gulfstream Park Turf H. on the lawn in
February 2015, Mshawish has performed admirably in his three
starts on the dirt. But he will be asked to negotiate 10 furlongs
in the World Cup, a distance he has not traversed since finishing
fourth in the 2013 G1 Prix du Jockey Club.
“We feel very confident,” Weisbord replied when asked if the
team is concerned about Mshawish’s ability to see out the trip.
“The horse this year is the most rateable he’s been in his life. As
a 5-year-old he was an extremely hard horse to ride. He sat a
perfect trip in the Donn and in the Hal’s Hope and relaxed
beautifully. He’s also able to finish better now, and I think that is
the key to him getting a mile and a quarter. I wouldn’t have had
any confidence in that last year or when he first came over,
given the way he was pulling, but he’s become smart in his
training and smart in his races and it’s not a concern.”
And what would a World Cup win mean to Sheikh Joann al
Thani?
“The Sheikh has won a lot of very big races, two Arc de
Triomphes, but this is probably the most important race in the
world for the Sheikh to win,” Weisbord offered. “I think being
that Dubai is so close to Qatar and being the richest and most
prestigious race in the world, this would mean everything to
him. If he can get to the race in the same shape he’s in today,
we feel he’s got a big chance in the World Cup.”
Weisbord reported that Mshawish departs South Florida
Sunday evening for Dubai with a stop first in Germany. He is
expected to arrive in the desert next Tuesday.
BOLO SEEKS FIRST GRADE I IN KILROE MILEBy Christie DeBernardis
Golden Pegasus Racing and Earle Mack’s Bolo (Temple City)
made an impressive return to the races last time out in the
GII Arcadia S. and looks to build on that, as well as score his first
win at the highest level, in
Saturday’s GI Frank E. Kilroe
Mile at Santa Anita.
Victorious in two of his three
starts on grass as a juvenile,
including the 2014 Eddie
Logan S., the dark bay tried
his hand at dirt at the start of
his sophomore campaign,
finishing a solid third to
Dortmund (Big Brown) in both the GII San Felipe S. and GI Santa
Anita Derby last spring. After a non-factor 12th behind American
Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) in the GI Kentucky Derby, Carla
Gaines returned her charge to the sod, winning an Arcadia
allowance before finishing a disappointing ninth in the GI
Belmont Derby July 4. Shelved for the rest of the season, Bolo
made his return to the races as a 7-1 shot in the Feb. 13 Arcadia
and surged late to deny MGISW Obviously (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}).
Hall of Famer Mike Smith, who was in the irons for the colt’s
first three starts and the Santa Anita Derby, gets back aboard
here.
The Sareen Family Trust’s talented Om (Munnings) looks to
rebound off a third-place finish in the Arcadia. Winner of last
year’s GII Del Mar Derby and GII Twilight Derby, the Dan
Hendricks trainee was a close third in the GI Hollywood Derby
Nov. 28 after being overtaken in the final furlong by the late
running Chiropractor (Kitten’s Joy) and March (Blame).
Returning to his winning ways in the GII Mathis Brothers Mile
Dec. 26, the flashy chestnut earned a 100 Beyer Speed Figure
for that effort and matched that figure last time when making a
three-wide bid to complete the trifecta behind the frontrunners
in the Arcadia.
“He’ll run his race in his usual spot right up front,” Hendricks
said to the Santa Anita press team. “We’ll see how the turf
plays, how the other horses come out of there and decide what
to do. There’s speed in the race--not Obviously’s speed--but
quite a bit, so I think there will be fast fractions for whoever is
out front.” Cont. p7

Hall of Fame conditioner Richard Mandella saddles Fox Hill

spot. A champion and MG1SW in his native Brazil, the dark bay
captured his U.S. debut in the GIII American S. last spring, but
finished off the board in the GI Shoemaker Mile and GII Del Mar
Mile H. Dropped in class, he captured a Del Mar optional claimer
last October and finished second to the reopposing Midnight
Storm (Pioneerof the Nile) in the GII Seabiscuit H. Nov. 27. He
was last seen finishing third in the nine-panel GII San Gabriel S.
Jan. 2 and should benefit from this cut back in distance.
Rounding out the seven-horse field are De Treville (GB) (Oasis

‘SPIRIT’ BACK FOR ‘MOR’ IN SAN FELIPEBy Christie DeBernardis
Michael Lund Petersen’s Mor Spirit (Eskendereya) looks to
score his third straight win in a loaded renewal of Santa Anita’s
GII San Felipe S. Saturday. Trained by Bob Baffert, who won this
test last year with “TDN
Rising Star” Dortmund
(Big Brown), the dark bay
followed a runner-up
effort in the GII Kentucky
Jockey Club S., which has
proven to be a key race
over a sloppy track at
Churchill Nov. 28, with a
victory in the GI Los
Alamitos Futurity Dec. 19. Starting his sophomore season the
same way he closed his juvenile one, Mor Spirit captured the GIII
Robert B. Lewis S. last time Feb. 6 and displays two solid breezes
since being eased during a work Feb. 23, most recently covering
six panels in 1:12.20 in Arcadia Mar. 5.
“TDN Rising Star” Danzing Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}) takes a
step up the class ladder here for trainer Cliff Sise. Eighth to the
reopposing Uncle Lino (Uncle Mo) after a troubled trip in his Del
Mar unveiling Nov. 29, the Halo Farms and Jim and Diane Bashor
runner rebounded with a decisive graduation in Arcadia Dec. 26.
The dark bay was ultra-impressive last time when romping by
5 3/4 lengths in a one-mile allowance over this strip Feb. 4.
The Desormeaux brothers team up here with MGSW
Exaggerator (Curlin), who is owned by Big Chief Racing, Head of
Plains Partners LLC, Rocker O Ranch LLC, et. al. Winner of last
term’s GII Saratoga Special S.,
the dark bay finished fourth
to champion Nyquist (Uncle
Mo) in the GI Breeders’ Cup
Juvenile S. Oct. 31 and
returned to take the GIII
Delta Downs Jackpot S. Nov.
21. He kicked off this term
with a runner-up effort to
the undefeated Eclipse
winner after pressing the pace in a speedy renewal of the seven-
panel GII San Vicente S. here Feb. 15.
Irvin Racing Stable’s undefeated Smokey Image (Southern
Image) has many making comparisons to 2014 Horse of the Year
California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) as he faces open company for
the first time in this test. The Cal-bred won his first five starts as
a juvenile, four of which were listed stakes, by a combined 18
1/2 lengths for previous trainer Greg James. Cont. p9

Transferred to Carla Gaines for his sophomore season, the
chestnut went gate-to-wire to register an 8 1/2-length
demolition of the California Cup Derby in his two-turn debut
over this track and trip Jan. 30. He has been working lights out in
Arcadia since his last start, including a best-of-31 six panels in
1:12.20 Feb. 27 and a five-furlong breeze in :59.60 (3/134) last
time Mar. 5.
Completing the San Felipe line up is Hans Poetsch’s I Will Score
(Roman Ruler), who enters off a third-place finish in the Robert
Lewis. The Jerry Hollendorfer pupil opened his account with a
6 1/2-length success at Los Alamitos Sept. 11 and followed suit
with a win in a local optional claimer Jan. 3. The dark bay will
likely be battling Smokey Image and Danzing Candy on the front
end early on.

‘BRODY’ RETURNS IN LOADED DERBY PREPBy Christie DeBernardis
Last term’s GI Breeders’ Futurity winner Brody’s Cause (Giant’s
Causeway) makes his
highly anticipated return
to the races Saturday in a
competitive renewal of
the GII Lambholm South
Tampa Bay Derby.
Graduating at second
asking over the Churchill
main last September after
a failed turf debut, the
Albaugh Family Stable
runner came flying late to deny Exaggerator (Curlin) in a muddy
renewal of Keeneland’s Breeders’ Futurity Oct. 3.
Producing a strong late rally to finish a game third behind
undefeated champion Nyquist (Uncle Mo) in the
GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Oct. 31, the bay has been working
well towards this return, including a half-mile breeze at Tampa
in :48.40 Mar. 6. With several speedy rivals signed on here, the
race should set up perfectly for this colt’s late-running style.
“Tampa Bay Downs is a good racetrack, and we shipped him a
little early because it’s a little different than the places he’s been
training and I thought it would be good for him to get some
miles over it before he runs,” trainer Dale Romans told the
Tampa notes team. “Hopefully he will come running Saturday,
get past all of them and have a nice gallop-out, to Kentucky [for
the GI Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland Apr. 9].”
Todd Pletcher has two strong chances to score his third win in
this event in the past four years, having won the 2013 edition
with Verrazano (More Than Ready) and the 2015 renewal with
Carpe Diem (Giant’s Causeway). Repole Stable homebred
Outwork (Uncle Mo) jumps up the class ladder here for the
seven-time Eclipse winner. The first runner and first winner for
last year’s top freshman sire at Keeneland Apr. 23, the bay was
subsequently sidelined and returned a winner sprinting over this
strip Feb. 13. Hall of Famer John Velazquez gets off GIII Sam F.
Davis S. winner Destin (Giant’s Causeway) to retain the mount
on Outwork. Eclipse winner Javier Castellano takes over the
controls on Twin Creeks Racing Stable’s Destin, a full-brother to
GISW Creative Cause. Fourth in the GIII LeComte S. Jan. 16, the
gray was much improved when scoring a 2 1/4-length victory
over the reopposing Rafting (Tapit) and Morning Fire (Friesan
Fire) in the local prep for this test Feb. 13.
Jacks or Better Farm’s speedy Awesome Banner (Awesome of
Course) is the expected pacesetter here. A track-record setting
debut winner at Gulfstream June 5, the Stanley Gold pupil easily
out-footed his rivals in both the GIII Hutcheson S. Jan. 2 and GII
Swale S. Jan. 30. He finished a well-beaten fifth behind the
undefeated Mohaymen (Tapit) when attempting two turns for
the first time in the GII Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth S. Feb.

The Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence colorbearer gave
his conditioner enough confidence in his first-out success at
Saratoga Aug. 8 to send him directly to the Swale off that
lengthy layoff.
Two other runners of interest here, Riker (Include) and Tale of
S’avall (Tale of Ekati), are both returning off of long layoffs.
Winner of his first four starts over the Woodbine synthetic,
including the GIII Grey S., Riker suffered his first defeat when
sixth in his first attempt on dirt in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Privately purchased from Tucci Stable by Gary Barber and Team
Valor, the dark bay was transferred from Nicholas Gonzalez to
Mark Casse and makes his first start for those new connections
here. Tabbed a “TDN Rising Star” off an impressive victory in his
Saratoga unveiling, Charles Fipke homebred Tale of S’avall tired

‘DUDE’ LOOKS FOR SAN CARLOS REPEATBy Christie DeBernardis
Jerry Hollendorfer and Green Smith’s Wild Dude (Wildcat
Heir)looks to score his second straight victory in Santa Anita’s
seven-panel GII San Carlos S. Saturday. The bay sprung an 11-1
upset in Del Mar’s GI Bring Crosby S. last July and missed by just
a half-length next out in the GII Pat O’Brien S. there a month
later. Rebounding to win the GI Santa Anita Sprint Championship
going a furlong shorter here Oct. 3, he was sixth behind another
sensational performance from champion Runhappy (Super
Saver) in the GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland Oct. 31.
Richard Pell’s Calculator (In Summation) returns to graded
company here off a winning comeback race at this track and trip
Feb. 13 after 13 months
on the bench. Second to
Triple Crown winner
American Pharoah
(Pioneerof the Nile) in
both the GI Del Mar
Futurity and GI
FrontRunner S. in 2014,
the gray was sidelined
with an injury after
breaking his maiden in last term’s GIII Sham S. last January.
Relegated to last after completely missing the break in his local
return, the Peter Miller pupil rushed up the outside to take
control at the half and held off a determined rival to score.
C R K Stable’s Kobe’s Back (Flatter), who is known for missing
the break and spotting the field early, looks to make it two in a
row here after capturing the GII Palos Verdes S. last time Feb. 7.
Winner of last term’s GIII Commonwealth S., the Peter Eurton
trainee missed by just a neck in the Santa Anita Sprint
Championship and was seventh in the Breeders’ Cup on
Halloween to his last out victory.

But with Dale Romans= runnerstypically needing one off the bench, I=ll shop for an alternative.Economic Model (Flatter), a smart debut winner at the Spa lastsummer, returned from the shelf with a very solid second-placefinish behind Awesome Banner (Awesome of Course) in theseven-furlong GII Swale S. at Gulfstream. The Chad Browntrainee had little chance to reel that one in that day, but he didfinish up the right way, including a solid gallop out. While hisQuiet American dam Queen of America was only a maiden oftwo attempts going short, her offspring have done quite wellrouting, including stakes winners Jimmy Simms and WellMonied. Irad Ortiz Jr. makes the trip to ride and this one shouldfind himself within perfect striking distance of what has to be ascorching early pace. Longshot Star Hill (Elusive Quality), abreakthrough maiden winner at fourth asking, will be on mytickets as well. Selection: #4 Economic Model (5-1).
GII San Felipe S. - With a very solid foundation at two and arazor sharp return effort under his belt in the seven-furlong GII San Vicente S., Exaggerator (Curlin) looks awfully tough tolook past in this spot. Last term's GII Saratoga Special S. and GIII Delta Downs Jackpot S. winner couldn't have run any betterin defeat when chasing home the unbeaten champion Nyquistlast time, earning a career-high 98 Beyer in the process. It=s hardto believe that he was fully cranked for his best that day and histactical speed should keep him well-positioned off what figuresto be a very lively pace. Cupid (Tapit) is very intriguing at a priceoff a good-looking maiden win in his two-turn debut for Baffert.Selection: #7 Exaggerator (5-2).
GIII Gotham S. - Adventist ran ok, and might still have a bitmore growing up to do, but settled for third. Not sure what tomake of that race as a whole. Total: $602.50.
GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby - This might be the mostinteresting and tricky race we=ve had to handicap so far in thiscontest. There are a number of tough judgment calls to make, and some distance questions to answer as well. Brody=s Cause(Giant=s Causeway) is as close to a Derby horse as I have at thispoint being that he=s the only runner I=ve made a future wageron, but I kind of want to give him the start here just to see howhe=s moved forward at three. Instead I=ll take a price shot withthe unbeaten and pretty much untested Outwork (Uncle Mo)--the Aother Pletcher.@ Highly touted before he broke his maidenfirst out at Keeneland last April, the Repole homebred took alocal sprint allowance here Feb. 13 by the easiest of 4 1/4-lengthmargins. Stablemate Destin (Giant=s Causeway) had annexed theGIII Sam F. Davis S. two races earlier and earned a much higherBeyer Speed Figure, but I was more impressed with Outwork, who looks like a big, powerful colt who should relish this addeddistance. Selection: #3 Outwork (12-1).
GII San Felipe S. - I was torn here between two very differenthorses--Cupid (Tapit), the Coolmore-owned, Baffert-trained$900,000 KEESEP yearling; and the unbeaten Smokey Image, aCal-bred son of Southern Image. I ultimately decided on thelatter, who is hard not to compare to California Chrome, a 7 1/2-length winner of this race two years ago off a similarlyfacile California Cup Derby score. What impressed me so muchabout Smokey Image last year was that he always found a wayto win--he had some tough trips and excuses to not show up,but he managed to find the wire in each of his five juvenilestarts. Transferred to Carla Gaines for this season, he took theCal Cup Derby with Songbird-like ease. The waters are about toget a whole lot deeper, but Smokey Image might just be up tothe task. Selection: #6 Smokey Image (4-1).
TDN=s Steve Sherack and Brian DiDonato will make $50 Win/Place bets on each Kentucky Derby prep and Triple Crown race. The handicapper with the highest bankroll after the Belmont Stakes wins. Scratches will result in the post time favorite.

TEPIN SEEKS TAMPA DOUBLEby Ben Massam
Robert E. Masterson’s Tepin (Bernstein), champion turf female
of 2015, kicked her 2016 season off in style with a much-the-
best score in the GIII Lambholm South Endeavour S. at Tampa
Bay Downs Feb. 13, and looks to keep her winning streak alive
with a follow-up win in Saturday’s GII Hillsborough S. Tabbed as
the prohibitive morning line
favorite at even money, the
5-year-old will attempt to
notch her first victory beyond
1 1/16 miles in the nine-
furlong test.
Tepin blossomed into a top-
notch turf miler last spring,
reeling off determined
victories in the GII Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill and the GI Just a
Game S. at Belmont. A hard-luck second in Saratoga’s GI Diana S.
and GII Ballston Spa S., the bay relished the soft turf at
Keeneland in the fall and ran away with both the GI First Lady S.
Oct. 3 and the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile on Halloween. The latter
triumph, in which the Mark Casse trainee defeated a number of
highly regarded male contemporaries, firmly established her
credentials to earn year-end championship honors.
If Tepin’s tactical speed is one of her greatest assets, she will
likely have a number of potential targets to follow--namely Siena
Farms’ Isabella Sings (Eskendereya). The chestnut draws the rail
for her seasonal debut, having closed out her sophomore year
on a strong note with a wire-to-wire tally in the GII Mrs. Revere
S. at Churchill Nov. 14. Conditioned by Todd Pletcher, Isabella
Sings has posted a steady diet of works at Palm Beach Downs
over the last month and a half. Cont. p12

behind stablemate Stephanie’s Kitten (Kitten’s Joy) in the GI

ASMUSSEN DUO VIES FOR QUEEN OF THE HIVEby Ben Massam
Trainer Steve Asmussen knows what it takes to win Oaklawn’s
GIII Honeybee S., having visited the race’s winner’s circle four
times. The 50-year-old
trainer appears well
positioned to notch win
number five Saturday,
sending out GISW
Nickname (Scat Daddy)
and the promising Terra
Promessa (Curlin) in the
Hot Springs oval’s
penultimate prep for the
GI Kentucky Oaks.
LNJ Foxwoods’ Nickname parlayed a second-out maiden
victory sprinting at Saratoga to a triumph in Belmont’s GI
Frizette S. last October, and closed out her juvenile campaign
with a fourth-place run behind unbeaten champion Songbird
(Medaglia d’Oro) in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. The
dark bay returned from a brief layoff to run second, beaten a
half-length, by Marquee Miss (Cowboy Cal) in the one-mile
Martha Washington S. here Feb. 6 [video]. Nickname has posted
four workouts in the interim and enters the Honeybee as the 7-5
morrning line favorite in a compact field of six.
Stonestreet Stables homebred Terra Promessa may lack the
credentials of her stablemate, but proved to be another
valuable member of Asmussen’s sophomore arsenal with a pair
of impressive wins around two turns, including a nine-length
romp in a first-level allowance test Feb. 5. The bay retains the
services of regular rider Ricardo Santana, Jr., who rode
Euphrosyne (Harlan’s Holiday) to Asmussen’s most recent
Honeybee triumph in 2014. Cont. p13

Honeybee cont.
Martha Washington winner Marquee Miss has made herself
right at home at Oaklawn, proving her versatility by annexing
the six-furlong Dixie Belle S. Jan. 15 prior to her most recent
score around two turns. Winner of the Arlington-Washington
Lassie as a juvenile, Marquee Miss can give trainer Ingrid Mason
her second consecutive win in the Honeybee, having won last
year’s renewal with Sarah Sis (Sharp Humor).
William K. Helwig’s She’s a Bootsy Too (Misremembered)
looms as an intriguing longshot in the race off a pair of
six-furlong wins over the Oaklawn strip to begin her career.
Purchased for just $17,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Midlantic juvenile,
the bay got up to score by a head after encountering trouble in a
Jan. 18 maiden dash and recently made it two-for-two with a
decisive allowance tally Feb. 26.
Completing the field are last term’s Churchill Downs
Debutante S. winner Cosmic Evolution (Proud Citizen), who will
also be making her first start around two turns, and Dorodansa
(Bellamy Road), third last out in the Martha Washington.

FULL GATE FOR FLORIDA OAKSby Ben Massam
In the context of a blockbuster Saturday card at Tampa Bay
Downs featuring the meet’s marquis event and an appearance
from a champion, it may
be the GIII Florida Oaks
that steals the show as
the most competitive
race on the card. A total
of 14 sophomore fillies
are set to vie for the
$200,000 pot, headlined
by the 2016 debuts of
graded stakes winners
Family Meeting (Sky
Mesa) and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Gamble’s Ghost (Ghostzapper).
Glen Hill Farm’s Family Meeting showed an immediate affinity
for the lawn last autumn, annexing a maiden test over the soft
turf at Laurel and shipping westward to make it two in a row
with a victory in Del Mar’s GIII Jimmy Durante S. Nov. 28. The
dark bay wrapped up her 2-year-old season with a runner-up
effort behind blowout winner Belvoir Bay (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) in
the Blue Norther S. at Santa Anita Dec. 27, and has posted a
steady series of stamina-building works over the local main track
for trainer Tom Proctor.
Gamble’s Ghost’s greatest achievements last year came over
Woodbine’s all-weather track, but the homebred’s one try over
the turf was surely respectable--a second-place run behind
eventual GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Catch a
Glimpse (City Zip) in the Sept. 12 GII Natalma S. The Josie Carroll
trainee went on to annex the GIII Mazarine S. Oct. 4 prior to
closing her season out with a pace-compromised runner-up
finish in the restricted Princess Elizabeth S. Nov. 1.
Two fillies who have the benefit of a prior start off the bench
coming into the Oaks are Spinamiss (Ire) (Lilbourne Lad {Ire})
and Conquest Bebop (Scat Daddy), second and seventh,
respectively, in Gulfstream’s Jan. 30 GIII Sweetest Chant S. The
former was acquired by St. Elias Stable after a three-race
juvenile campaign in Ireland, and captured her initial North
American start for trainer Todd Pletcher Dec. 20 prior to her
recent run in Hallandale. A first-out maiden winner at Woodbine
last November, Conquest Bebop was fractious loading into the
outside stall last time and should benefit from a move inward to
the two-hole Saturday.
The Chad Brown barn often plays a major role in the outcome
of stakes in the female turf division, and the trainer will saddle
Ava’s Kitten (Kitten’s Joy) for owners/breeders Ken and Sarah
Ramsey. Cont. p14

MOHAYMEN BREEZES FOR FLORIDA DERBY Shadwell Stable’s undefeated multiple Grade II winner
Mohaymen (Tapit) breezed a half-mile in :49.40 Friday morning
at Palm Meadows in preparation for his next start in the GI
Florida Derby Apr. 2 at
Gulfstream Park.
With regular exercise
rider Miguel Jaime
aboard, the sophomore’s
work was the
second-fastest of 36
horses at the distance
over the main track.
It was the first work
back for Mohaymen
since his 2 1/4-length victory in the GII Xpressbet.com Fountain
of Youth S. Feb. 27, and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin plans two
more breezes leading up to the GI Florida Derby Apr. 2.
“He went in :49 and two, but the track was a little dull this
morning, a little dry. It was probably equivalent to :48 and two,
so it was a very good work,” McLaughlin said. “We’re very happy
with him. He’s doing great and we’re happy to have him back on
the worktab.”
Prior to his Fountain of Youth win, the undefeated Mohaymen
also captured the GII Nashua S. and GII Remsen S. as a juvenile
and the GII Lambholm South Holy Bull S. Jan. 30 at Gulfstream.
“Obviously, he’s two-for-two this year so everything is great.”
McLaughlin said. “No changes. He’s happy, and we just want to
keep him that way.”
The 65th running of the Florida Derby is shaping up as a
showdown between Mohaymen and J. Paul Reddam’s
undefeated champion Nyquist (Uncle Mo), winner of the GI
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Nyquist is scheduled to have his final
work in California before arriving at Gulfstream Mar. 28.
Look for the K throughout the TDN graded stakes
entries, denoting Keeneland sales graduates.

The announcement was made Friday at the Longines Gran
Premio Latinomericano in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by James L.
Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey
Club, and Horacio Esposito and Pablo Kavulakian, president and
director, respectively, of the Latin American Racing Channel.
Among the prospective topics are simulcasting, illegal betting,
medication, harmonization of rules, international ratings and
classifications, marketing, stud book issues, the importing and
exporting of bloodstock, and Thoroughbred ownership.
The conference will also include several premier social events
at prominent landmarks around the Washington, D.C., area,
culminating with a trip to Baltimore for the GI Preakness S.
“The Jockey Club continues to be an active member of the
international community, and we take pride in welcoming
international guests,” said Gagliano. “Those who attended the
Pan Am Conference in New York found it to be an informative,
first-class experience in every regard, and we are confident they
will feel the same way when this one is over.”
“Thoroughbreds from South American countries continue to
enhance their reputation in the breeding shed and on the
racetrack and they compete successfully throughout the world,”
said Esposito. “This conference will be educational not only for
our various Latin and South American constituents but also for
the numerous delegates who attend from other parts of the
world.”
“Collaboration of racing and breeding for the American
continents has been our main goal since the inception of our
company 10 years ago. We foresee this second conference as an
active forum to exchange knowledge, experience, and a vision
for the future of racing,” said Kavulakian.

TEXAS TO ENFORCE CORTICOSTEROID
THRESHOLDS AS OF APR. 7by T.D. Thornton
The Texas Racing Commission has ended a year-long study on
corticosteroid use and will begin enforcing threshold levels in
Thoroughbreds that meet Racing Medication and Testing
Consortium standards starting with the opening of the Lone
Star Park racing season Apr. 7.
Horsemen were given notice of the policy change in the form
of a Mar. 10 letter from the commission’s executive director,
Chuck Trout, that was sent to the Texas Horsemen’s
Partnership and the Texas Thoroughbred Association.
In February 2015, the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic
Laboratory was granted a phase-in period to allow it to calibrate
its corticosteroid detection results with other RMTC-certified
labs. During the past year, veterinarians were given feedback
about overages in advance of the commission beginning its
enforcement of corticosteroid thresholds.
“TVMDL has refined its testing processes and is now confident
their results are accurate and consistent with results at other
RMTC-certified labs,” Trout wrote. “In addition, during Sam
Houston Race Park’s 2016 Thoroughbred meet, TVMDL
detected only one above-threshold corticosteroid,
Triamcinolone Acetonide, out of samples from 316 races.”
According to Trout, the enforcement will apply to
Thoroughbreds only. Notice for enforcement in Quarter Horses
may come at a later date.

SALLISAW (c, 3, Exchange Rate--Smokey Diplomacy {SP}, by
Dynaformer), a debut winner at Saratoga last April, was a
distant runner-up behind the impressive Jan’s Reserve (Ready’s
Image) in the Nov. 27 Kings Swan S. before rounding out the
trifecta in back of King Kranz (Munnings) in the Lost In the Fog
S. New Year’s Day. The bay was odds-on to clear his first
allowance condition over Laurel’s one-turn mile Feb. 6 and
argued the early pace before tailing off to finish third. Adding
blinkers for this return to the Big Apple, the 7-2 chance was off
a half-step slow, but quickly made up any lost ground to sit a
stalking trip from fourth while in the clear. Given his cue
midway on the circle, he joined in outside of favored Bust
Another (Bustin Stones) at the head of the lane, dueled with
that one into the final furlong and went on to score by a half-
length. Ready Dancer (Ready’s Image) closed belatedly for third.
The winner is a half to Clear the Runway (Broken Vow), SW,
$146,131, and to a 2-year-old Mineshaft colt that sold for
$270,000 at last year’s Keeneland September sale. Smokey

BACKSIDEOFTHEMOON (r, 4, Malibu Moon--Ballado's Thunder
{SW, $285,667}, by Saint Ballado) began his career with a good
fourth at 78-1 last September at Belmont behind ‘TDN Rising
Star’ Marking (Bernardini), then earned his diploma two races
later Nov. 4 at Aqueduct. He continued to churn out good,
check-earning efforts with a third at 21-1 Nov. 27 and two close
fourth-place finishes over this track Dec. 19 and Feb. 11,
respectively. Given a 6-1 chance Friday, the ridgling was caught
four wide heading into the clubhouse turn, but maneuvered
into the two path by the time the field hit the backstretch. He
sat a stalking second, just off the pace of fellow 6-1 shot Still Krz
(Old Forester) until drawing even with that one midway around
the far turn.
The two of them dueled well into the stretch before
Backsideofthemoon asserted command past the sixteenth pole,
pulling clear to score by 1 1/2 lengths on the line. Imperia
(Medaglia d’Oro), second by a head in the GII Kentucky Jockey
Club S. In 2014, made a mild three-wide run at the leaders on

CLAIR DE LUNE (f, 3, Malibu Moon--Chicalelee, by Cherokee
Run) remained perfect going two turns with a front-running
allowance success Friday afternoon at Aqueduct. Sent
immediately to the lead by Jose Ortiz, the bay filly had company
to her outside in the form of Awesome Dame (Awesome of
Course) as odds-on Sense of Beauty (Street Sense) looked to be
struggling a bit about a half-dozen lengths further back. Clair de
Lune did away with Awesome Dame nearing the stretch and
pulled steadily clear to score by 6 1/2 lengths. Sense of Beauty
rallied late for second while never any sort of menace to the
winner. Clair de Lune, a debut seventh sprinting over the inner
track Dec. 27, improved markedly when stretched out to the
mile Feb. 11, leading every step of the way to graduate by
2 1/2 lengths. The winner’s dam was claimed for $10,000 at the
Fair Grounds in February 2012 and was put in foal to this sire
soon after. This, her first foal, fetched $230,000 as a weanling at
the 2013 Keeneland November sale. She also has a 2-year-old

Apologynotaccepted ahead of Friday’s eighth race at Gulfstream

morning line of 12-1 into a starting price just one-third of that.
The homebred mare had the rail post and a formidable foe in
the form of big-figure debuter Stylish Quality (Quality Road) to
overcome, but she left there running and soon led. She covered
her opening half-mile
in :45.34, skipped
well clear of her

TAXABLE (f, 3, Tapit--Jackpot Joanie, by Giant's Causeway)
could barely have been more impressive in a single juvenile
appearance, scampering away from eight of her fellow 2-year-
old fillies to graduate by an imposing seven-length margin. Off
the radar since, the homebred was the 2-1 second choice
behind her stablemate Cced (Curlin), the long odds-on favorite
off a five-length maiden win at the Fair Grounds Feb. 11.
Allowed to bide her time from a ground-saving fourth, Taxable
was shuffled back a spot leaving the half-mile marker, but still
traveled well inside on the turn. Cced loomed boldly, but had
run her race by the time they’d reached the head of the stretch,
and Taxable was beginning to hit her best stride simultaneously.
Set down in upper stretch by Corey Nakatani, the homebred
leveled off beautifully and finished well for a two-length victory
from Katalust (Munnings). Cced dropped back to finish sixth.
Taxable is out of a winning half-sister to 2005 GI Kentucky Oaks
winner Summerly (Summer Squall) and is a full-sister to 2-year-
old Totality, a $625,000 RNA at last year’s Keeneland September

LOST BUS (f, 4, Bring the Heat--Frysland, by Stravinsky) ran

Tony Ryan Book Award cont.
The Book Award was the 2006 brainchild of the late Dr. Tony
Ryan, for whom it is now named. He launched the competition
to recognize and honor full-length books written with a horse
racing background and offered a $10,000 prize--equal to that of
the famed National Book Award. Since Dr. Ryan's passing in
2007, the contest has been continued annually by his son,
Shane Ryan, President of Castleton Lyons, and winners have
included some of the best writers both in and out of the
thoroughbred industry.
The three 2015 finalists will be revealed via press release later
this month, with the winner being announced during an April
13 invitation-only reception at the Castleton Lyons farm near
Lexington.
