From the Principal’s Desk
It’s the end of the school year. It seems like yesterday that we got started with our Back to School Night and Open House. To say that the school year has flown by is an understatement. The students and staff have worked tremendously hard through-out the year. With one week left to go, thoughts are now on summer plans and preparing for the 2017-18 school year.
For the last week of the school year, units of study and pro-jects will be wrapping up in classrooms. We will have one last restaurant night on Monday, June 5 (please see the flyer attached to this newsletter). It will take place at Subway and Zinga. This is an annual end-of-year restaurant night where both of these eating establishments work together to help raise mon-ey for our school. On Wednesday morning, June 7, Sanders Corner Alumni that will be graduating from Stone Bridge High School will parade through the halls first thing in the AM. Stu-dents in 5th Grade will rehearse their promotion ceremony on Thursday afternoon, then on Friday morning at 9:00, will begin the actual ceremony where they will be promoted to 6th Grade, followed by a celebration in the afternoon.
During the summer, staff will be setting schedules, finalizing class placements, planning trainings for teachers, and getting ready for the implementation of Personalized Learning in grades 3-5. You will hear more about this at our Back to School Night presentations on August 22. The first day of school for students next year will be on Thursday, August 24.
As the school year comes to a close, I want to thank our stu-dents, staff, and members of the community for making this a very special year at Sanders Corner. I sincerely appreciate the dedication that everyone has in supporting our school and all that we do for your children. It is an honor to serve as the princi-pal of such a fine school and community. Keep an Eye on Lunch Accounts
As we continue to get closer to the end of the school
year, it is important that you check your child’s lunch ac-
count for any “Low” or “Negative” balances. It is required
by LCPS School Nutrition Services that we end the
school year with a balance of $0.00 dollars. Any negative
balances MUST be paid in full before your child departs
for the summer. Any funds left on the account will roll-
over to the 2017-2018 school year. Please ask your
child on a weekly basis if they have enough funds in their
account to get them through the end of the school year.
Any students with a NEGATIVE BALANCE on
their account will receive an alternative lunch until their
accounts have been paid. It is in the best interest of the
child that accounts are frequently checked and replen-
ished by the parent/guardian. You may check the status
of your child’s account by going to https://
www.myschoolbucks.com/ and following the step-by-step
instructions on the screen. You may pay your child’s ac-
count in 3 ways:
Via the internet at https://www.myschoolbucks.com/
Send cash with the student. If you send cash inside an envelope, make sure the student’s name or stu-dent ID # is written.
Send check written out to “County of Loudoun.” On the memo section of the check, please write in the student ID #.

Student Artwork Featured at the LCPS Administration Building
Artwork that was created by students from Sanders Corner Elementary School is currently on display at the LCPS Administration building, which is on 21000 Education Court, in Ashburn. In all, there are 26 pieces of art on display on the 5th floor of this building. The exhibit can be seen by visiting the Administration building during normal business hours (8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Visitors will need to sign in at the front desk to get a badge/elevator pass.
Classes and students that are featured include students from Ms. Lyons’ class (Kaiya, Logan, Miriam, Saman, and Lily) who did a landscape with trees, Mrs. Gupton’s class (Andrew, Nina, Mad-dy, Luke, Ryan, Samantha, and Grady) who also did a landscape, and Ms. Castellano’s class (Avalon, Kaylen, Ashley, Brady, Jonathan, Adrina, Jack, Ania, Joanne, Kendall, Henryk, Adrena, Maryam, and Sophia) who made fauvist animal paintings. Congratulations to these students, and thank you to Mrs. Hanes for organizing the displays!
Sanders Corner Teachers Recognized for Excellence
Several teachers at Sanders Corner were recognized recently as Teachers of the Year. Mr. Brady and Mrs, Olevson were honored as the representatives from Sanders Corner Elementary School for the Washington Post Teacher of the Year. A dinner was held to honor them as well as the other representatives from Loudoun County Public School in late April.
Also, Mrs. Riggio was recognized as the Sanders Corner representative as the Shenandoah University Teacher of the Year. Those recognized for this honor include special education and spe-cialists teachers. A ceremony honoring her was held at the Ashburn Campus of Shenandoah Uni-versity in mid May.

Principal Duct Taped to the Wall
As part of a PTA incentive, One student (in this case family) had a ticket drawn that allowed them to duct tape the Principal of Sanders Corner Elementary School to a wall. This was done on Friday afternoon. Don’t worry. Mr. Jacques was able to be freed. Eventually :)

Reflex Math Student Rights and Responsibilities
The National Summer Learning Association* says students can lose up to three months of academic growth during the summer break when they’re not in school. This phenomenon,
commonly referred to as the “summer slide,” is completely avoidable.
To help your children retain math concepts all year long, aim for thirty minutes three times a week, and the only slide your kids will experience this summer is the kind in the playgrounds and pools.
Six Easy Ways toFight the Summer Slide
(and have fun doing it)
Developing number sense. Counting, estimating, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and working with fractions and money are important skills for your child. The more children use numbers, the better they understand number relationships. Simple card games can help kids develop matching and value recognition skills. Start with an easy-to-learn game like “War” that teaches them to identify numbers greater than or less than others.
Finding and understanding patterns. Create patterns with your child using numbers, shapes, or objects, and ask them what comes next. If there are six shapes repeated in the pattern, ask what shape will be in the tenth spot. Point out designs and ask your child to identify the pattern. The more you discuss patterns, the more instinctively your child will recognize them.
Exploring two-dimensional figures. Most kids love to draw. Why not incorporate shapes and geometric vocabulary into the mix? Ask your child to make an ice cream cone using two shapes. Then talk about the attributes of the shapes. How many sides does a triangle have? How many angles? Which lines are parallel?
Understanding three-dimensional objects. Using building sets, ask your child to create a structure for a certain purpose (e.g., to house the horses) or that meets certain criteria (e.g., has a way for people to enter and exit). After they build their structure, ask them to describe how it functions to meet its given purpose.
Create a project together that requires measurement (e.g., build a birdhouse, sew a quilt, or bake some brownies). Discuss the tools you use and how to get exact measurements.
Graphing research. Collect data, organize it, and interpret the results together. For example, research the most popular car color in your neighborhood. First, predict what color will be the winner. Then go for a walk with notebook in hand, and record the car colors you see. When you get home create a bar graph together.
Solving everyday problems. Involve your child in real-life problem solving by thinking out loud and explaining your reasoning. When planting a garden, how many seed packets will we need? Calculate how many seeds we’ll need per row at six inches apart. What tool should we measure with or should we estimate? The more kids hear your reasoning, the more comfortable they’ll become using math.
