Metadata in ArcGIS
• ArcGIS metadata goals • Editing metadata • Setting your metadata style • New in 10.1 • Leveraging metadata in ArcGIS • Upgrading 9.3.1 metadata for ArcGIS 10.x • Importing and exporting metadata • Tips and tricks • Metadata standards workshop 1:30 - 2:45 Room 30 D
ArcGIS metadata goals
• Complete support for ISO and FGDC CSDGM standards and selected profiles
• Validate metadata • Common experience for all users • Simplify workflows • Support the ArcGIS system
Editing metadata
• For datasets, services, tools, maps, layer files, etc. • Description tab in any ArcGIS for Desktop application
- ArcCatalog - Item Description window
• Properties dialog box - maps, globes, scenes, layer files
Editing metadata
• In ArcCatalog
Editing metadata
• From the Catalog window
Editing metadata
• From the Search window
Editing metadata
• From the Table of Contents (same as from Catalog window for the data)
Editing metadata
• In Properties dialog box • Maps, scenes, globes: save if they are open
Setting your metadata style
• Brief Item Description style the default
Expected value described
Setting your metadata style
• Full metadata: pick another style in Options dialog box • Applies to all ArcGIS for Desktop applications
Setting your metadata style
• Determines how metadata is - Displayed - Edited - Exported - Validated
• Set once to meet organizational requirements
Setting your metadata style
• All non-default styles support full metadata
Full content
Setting your metadata style
Full content
Setting your metadata style
• All non-default styles display - ArcGIS metadata - FGDC-formatted content - ISO 19139-formatted content - XML structure if not a recognized format
• All non-default styles edit with a common set of pages
Setting your metadata style
• ArcGIS metadata includes all concepts for supported standards and profiles
• A style filters the full set of concepts
Setting your metadata style
• Adds or removes pages
ISO-based styles add Locales page
Setting your metadata style
• Adds or removes elements on a page
NAP style adds a country code
Setting your metadata style
• Validation rules are appropriate
ISO 19139
FGDC
New in 10.1
• Improved framework for validating content as you type • Table of contents instantly shows status • Page lists errors on top
- Problems described in plain language - Error list adjusts as content changes - Red background: easier to see problems
New in 10.1
Missing required value or invalid data type
Error list
Page status
New in 10.1
• Save a repository of contacts
Check a contact to save it
New in 10.1
• Load saved contacts into metadata
Pick the saved contact from a list
New in 10.1
• Additional content included in brief Item Description - Appropriate scale range - Bounding box
New in 10.1
• Full metadata for services - Describe the entire service
• Service metadata doesn’t include any file paths or internal content
• Metadata in a package doesn’t include machine names
Leveraging metadata in ArcGIS
• Item description content indexed for ArcGIS for Desktop search
Leveraging metadata in ArcGIS
• New map layer or layer file, properties derived from dataset metadata
Leveraging metadata in ArcGIS
• Package brief description derived from item’s metadata
Populated automatically
Leveraging metadata in ArcGIS
• Package contents have full metadata • Access it from the Catalog window
Leveraging metadata in ArcGIS
• Service description derived from item’s metadata
Populated automatically
Leveraging metadata in ArcGIS
• Service full metadata derived from item’s metadata
Leveraging metadata in ArcGIS
• Description at REST endpoint is derived from item’s metadata
Leveraging metadata in ArcGIS
• ArcGIS Server service’s REST endpoint provides access to full metadata
Upgrading 9.3.1 metadata for ArcGIS 10.x
• ArcGIS 10.x writes metadata in an internal format—ArcGIS metadata
- Manual edits in the Description tab - Automatic metadata synchronization updates - ArcGIS software writes content behind the scenes
• ArcGIS leverages ArcGIS metadata • Upgrade 9.3.1 metadata to the ArcGIS 10.x format
- Same format used by 10.0 and 10.1
Upgrading 9.3.1 metadata for ArcGIS 10.x
• Includes all concepts for supported standards and profiles
• Includes additional ArcGIS-specific content - Thumbnail, geoprocessing history, tool descriptions,
enclosures, detailed item properties
Upgrading 9.3.1 metadata for ArcGIS 10.x
• Upgrade copies information to ArcGIS metadata format • 9.3.1 FGDC metadata editor—use Upgrade Metadata tool
- Prompted to upgrade metadata when you view it - Run Upgrade Metadata tool manually
• 9.3.1 ISO metadata editor wizard - Metadata is upgraded automatically when you save edits - Run Upgrade Metadata tool manually
• Use ArcGIS 10.0 Service Pack 4 or later
Upgrading 9.3.1 metadata for ArcGIS 10.x
• Can re-upgrade metadata with more recent Service Pack • After upgrade, 9.3.1 content remains
- Can remove it with a geoprocessing model and provided XSLT stylesheet
Importing and exporting metadata
• The process of converting metadata between the ArcGIS metadata XML format and another XML format
• Conversion is determined by the metadata style - Import from and export to FGDC CSDGM format - Import from and export to ISO 19139 format
• ArcCatalog toolbar button exports many items
Importing and exporting metadata
• Use standard format XML files outside of ArcGIS - Publish to a geoportal - Validate files with an XML schema, Schematron, or another
application
• Automate Python scripts to export files periodically - Export Metadata tool - Metadata is synchronized before content is exported
Importing and exporting metadata
• Not exporting - Save As XML: save a copy of ArcGIS metadata to an XML file - Save As HTML: save the metadata display as an HTML file
• Different representation of the same format - Result is still ArcGIS metadata - Both accomplished with XSLT Transformation tool
Importing and exporting metadata
• Not exporting - Produce other file formats from an exported FGDC-format
XML file
• Different representation of the same format - Result is still FGDC CSDGM metadata - Accomplished with USGS MP Metadata Translator tool
Tips and tricks
• Check online Help system for ArcGIS • If you’re using the Description tab when setting the style,
click something else then go back to see the change • Metadata display supports shortcuts
- Go to bottom: Ctrl-End - Go to top: Ctrl-Home - Copy highlighted text: Ctrl-C - Find text on page: Ctrl-F
Tips and tricks
• Copy metadata from another item with the Import button • Can include standard-format metadata XML files in a
package - Export metadata to XML files - During packaging add them as Additional Files - When package is unpacked, access files in Home folder
Tips and tricks
• Update metadata content with XSLT processing - Available XSLTs: XSLT Transformation tool - Create your own: Editing metadata for many ArcGIS items
Change the metadata
Save the changes
Tips and tricks
• After a metadata geoprocessing tool runs, the workspace containing the output is selected
- Original item you were working with is no longer selected
• Reopen and rerun tools from the results window to avoid resetting all tool parameters
• When upgrading metadata in a geodatabase, make sure user who can edit data runs the tool
