TThis passage about penguins comes from a science news
story.
A
report in a London newspaper several years
ago got worldwide publicity. The report
claimed that Antarctic penguins fall over back-
ward while looking at airplanes flying overhead.
According to the story, Royal Air Force pilots reported
that penguins on the ground below them fell down one
after another like dominoes. Environmentalists became
worried that increasing aircraft activity in the Antarctic
might be harmful to penguins, even causing them to
leave their eggs. Richard Stone of the British Antarctic
Survey decided to investigate.
Stone went to the island of South Georgia, near
Antarctica, to shady how penguins react to helicopters
flying over them. During the five-week study, a heli-
copter made many flights over a penguin colony. As the
aircraft approached, the birds stopped calling to each
other, and became quiet. When the helicopter could no
longer be heard, the birds quickly returned to their nor-
mal behavior. Stone found that breeding adults stayed by
their nests as usual. He found no evidence of egg or
chick loss in the penguin colony. Furthermore, during
the experimental period, the number of baby chicks in
the South Georgia colony increased at the same rate as
those in a colony at nearby Possession Bay, where
planes did not fly over. At this time, Stone believes that
aircraft flying overhead have only small and temporary
effects on penguins. He does, however, plan to studyvideos he made of the penguins during the study to see
if he can find any changes to the birds' behavior that he
didn't notice earlier.

ed Press

Dear Abigail
My father has been offered a job in Brazil which means the
whole family must move to a foreign country for at least 2
years, leaving behind friends and family. I am 16 years old
and need two more years to finish high school.
I feel mature enough to live a lone in my own country. My par-
ents wont even hear of this and I dont even want to think ofspending my last two years of high school anywhere else.
Weve reached a deadlock.
Caught in the middle.
A. LETTERAbigail has asked her readers to write giving suggestions and advice. Write a letter to Caught in the middle.
Give him/her your suggestions and advice.
B. ESSAYParents are most often over protective and do not let children make their own decisions and because of this
over protectiveness think they cant trust their children. It has been shown that freedom to act on ones own aids
maturity and responsibility. Do you agree with this? Give examples from your own or friends experiences tosupport your view.
Write to Abigail.
She will answer
your letters in her
advice column.

Expressions used for giving advice or making suggestions
1. If I were you 2. It seems to me 3. In my opinion
4. I would suggest/recommend 5. Why not try 6. Why don't you?
7. It might be a good idea to
Brainstorming A
- too young to stay alone
- expensive, keep double household
- new experience- Brazil beautiful
- make new friends
- you are very negative toward a great experience
- it's only for two years-won't loose old friends and family
- come back from holidays
A: LETTER
Dear Caught in the middle:
It seems to me that you are taking a very negative attitude to something that could be a great experience and learn-
ing activity.
If I were you, I would be thrilled to be able to live in such a beautiful country like Brazil and go to school there. After all, it's only for two years. Think of the new friends you'll make and in two years time your old friends and fami-
ly will surely not forget you. Besides, if you really wanted to, you could come back for at least the summer holidays, if
not for Christmas as well. But, if I were you, I would rather soak up the sun on Brazilian beaches. Why not give it a try
for a year and then discuss it again with your parents.
To be very honest, I think 16 is too young to live on your own and also think of the cost of running two households.
It's not fair to your parents, since you can't afford to pay for your own expenses. Try to have a positive attitude and you
may end up having some real stories to tell when your two year adventure is over.
Brainstorming B
- true-parents overprotective-more experienced
- agree, must make own mistakes-learn
- need freedom of choice but also help in making choices
- example of family friend who didn't want university
- today very rich buisenss man-exception
- balance between freedom of choice and parents' advice
B: ESSAY
It would be very safe to say that Greek parents are definitely over protective, but not because they don't trust their
children. They do it because they know the world and its traps and dangers better, through their own experiences. I truly
believe that children should have freedom to make their own mistakes because it is said that we learn from our mistakes.
But, as the ancient Greeks used to say "all things in moderation, not total freedom".
Our parents should help by giving their opinion and guidance, but should not be oppressive, as was the case with a
family friend, whose parents insisted he go to university. This particular boy did not want to become an architect like his
father and dropped out of "Polytech" university after six months. He took cooking classes and now owns a very pro-
fitable, high-class restaurant in Athens. He did what he thought was best for him and it paid off. But, this is not always
the case. How many times our parents have warned us about something and contrary to our opinion or belief at the time, they were right? I hate to admit it, but this has happened to me many times. Let's face it, with age comes experience and
maturity.
Still, I think the ideal situation is where parents stand in the background, offering support and guidance and allow us
some much needed freedom to fall on our face, so we can learn to be responsible and make the correct choices ourselves.
