Mass Intentions
Lift Up Your Hearts
We celebrate the third Sunday of Advent this
weekend hearing the call to “Rejoice, for the Lord is
near.” In these last days before Christmas, in the
midst of all of our busy holiday preparations, we
should take the opportunity examine our own hearts.
Do we readily welcome the Lord and accept His
Word in our everyday lives?
When people came to John the Baptist asking,
“What should we do?” he gives them the most
reasonable, common-sense reply. In effect, John tells
them, “Live faithfully. Live honestly. Live honorably.”
The people were able to exult with all their hearts,
without any anxiety, because the Lord was as near to
them at that time as at the next moment.
The Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation) is a
beautiful opportunity for us to come close to the Lord
in a way that frees us from our own doubts and
mistakes, and helps us to live our lives more faithfully,
more honestly and more honorably.
I want to remind you of some special
opportunities this week for confession. This
Tuesday, December 18, 6:30pm to 7:30pm at Saint
Louise Church, we will have additional priests
available to hear confession; and on Wednesday,
December 19, 6:00pm to 7:00pm at Saint Joan
Church, Fathers Joe, Dan and Jon will be available to
hear confession. Please remember also our regular
opportunities on Saturdays (11:30am at Saint Louise,
and 12 noon at Saint Joan).
Yours in Christ,
Fr Joe

He has a high school education and is physically
capable of manual labor. However, he is emotionally
limited to an early teenager, does not drive, lives in the
Park ford area, (no public transportation) and he would
need some nearby supervision. If you can help,
please call us 412-833-2450.
Year End Giving: We have a long wish list of
capital improvements, renovations, and new programs
at the Parishes. Please consider adding Saint Joan or

can direct the donation to Parish Share to help us reach
our goal of $89,963.00, to the parish in general, or to a

Our Saint Vincent de Paul Society
"Angel Tree"
With your help, we will again be
giving gifts to needy families in our
parish. Our Saint Vincent de Paul
Society "Angel Tree" will be
decorated with angels. Each angel
will have a "name", an age, and on
some, a clothing size.
Games, toys, and clothing all make wonderful gifts! We
cannot accept perishable items, candy or snacks.
Securely attach the angel to your gift and leave the gift
under our tree before or after mass, or evening CCD
classes. Do not wrap or seal the gift! (Christmas gift
bags would be great!)
GIFTS MUST BE RETURNED
TO THE TREE NO LATER THAN
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2018.
The Saint Vincent DePaul Society thanks you in
advance for sharing the joy and love of Christmas with
a needy child. You truly are a Christmas Angel!

If you are looking for ways to broaden your faith
through serving those in need please contact Andy Hays

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and
snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the
heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell, Satan and the other evil spirits, who prowl
about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

PRAYER OF BISHOP ZUBIK FOR
ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE
Father of Mercy,
as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive!,
endow us with your gifts of collaboration,
courage and compassion.
Help us to fulfill the mission of Jesus and
His Church through vibrant parishes and
effective ministries.
Raise up selfless, energetic leaders to serve
the Church in fidelity and with care.
May we, the Church of Pittsburgh in
Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene,
Lawrence and Washington Counties,
be sustained and strengthened by your grace.
Help us to learn Jesus, to love Jesus and to live Jesus.
Hear this prayer and grant it through
Jesus Christ our Lord, with the help of our dear
Blessed Mother, under the mantle of her love,
Amen.
Rejoice in the Lord
Always – The Third
Sunday of Advent is a bit
different than the others.
While violet has been the
color we are used to the
past few weeks, this week
the candle and the
vestments are a rose color. These changes signify an
increased joy in our hearts on this Sunday which we call
Gaudete, which means “rejoice!” Our joy is increased
because we know that our Savior is near, Emmanuel,
God is with us. And, yet, a bit of anxiety may also creep
in. We may be asking ourselves, “are we ready?” “What
must we still do?” This is what those in today’s Gospel
were asking John the Baptist. His response? Be
generous. Be honest. Don’t cheat others.
As Christmas draws ever nearer, there may be lots of
things that distract us from what the Lord truly desires
of us this time of year. God wants us to rejoice today,
and all days, in freedom of heart so that we may share
our gifts and proclaim the good news of God dwelling
among us and in us. These lessons can also serve us well
as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! and
recognize God at work in the hearts of sisters and
brothers in faith. Rejoice! The Lord is near! Let the
peace of God guard your hearts and minds in Christ
Jesus.
