Howdy and welcome to a newly revamped CARPOOL
CHRONICLE! Over the past few years, CARPOOL has been without a
regular newsletter that highlights many of its accomplishments and
activities. With the numerous important changes occurring in CARPOOL,
the time is perfect to resurrect the old newsletter to keep our alumni,
sponsors, and donors better informed.
The current year’s Chair, Phil Negron, as well as the Director and
Executive staff have been working tirelessly to revamp CARPOOL’s
framework, allowing the organization to become a stronger, more
sustainable, and a more professional organization while still making it one of
the most energetic and fun organizations at Texas A&M. The 2011-2012
Chair of CARPOOL, Brian DiIorio, has a vision that is more member
driven and community oriented, which should help propel CARPOOL to
new heights. If you would like to learn more, you can view our current
press release at http://carpool.tamu.edu.

Recent and Upcoming Events
Starting in the Spring of
2010, Morgan Alexander (current
Director of Fundraising) started
planning a new unique fundraiser.
In the Fall of 2010, CARPOOL
held its 1st annual Clay & Trap
Tournament. The event went off
with a bang! Dinner was graciously
provided by Slovacek Sausage and
the numerous guests wereentertained by the Aggie
Wranglers, the singing cadets, and
Texas A&M’s first lady, Reveille.
What’s been happening in CARPOOL and what are we getting
ourselves into?Last year, CARPOOL
started valeting for events in the
BCS area as a new type of
fundraiser and social networking
opportunity. Recently we ran valet
operations for the Daddy-Daughter
Dance at the children’s center in
downtown Bryan. Volunteering for
this occasion not only earned us some generous donations, but italso gave us the chance to spend the
night with wonderful parents and
their daughters in the creatively
decorated children’s center.
Continuing with valeting, on
February 18, CARPOOL was lucky
enough to valet during an honorary
dinner for world-renowned
architect Adrian Smith.
We are constantly
searching for more valeting
opportunities that allow our
presence in the community to be
seen on more than just weekend
nights. We will assuredly be seen
valeting at events throughout the
rest of this semester.
Away from the valeting
events are the fundraisers. Each of
CARPOOL’s 10 teams has been
given the challenge of developing
their own unique fundraiser to help
earn CARPOOL some much-
needed operational funds. These
events range from profit shares to t-
shirt sales. If you’d be interested in
purchasing a unique CARPOOL
shirt for the public, visit
http://carpool.tamu.edu/shirt
Also coming up on
our slate of events, we have
CARPOOL’s annual Gala and the
annual Swing for the Rides Golf
Tournament! Continue to page 3 to

Gala
On March 5th, 2011 from
6-10pm, CARPOOL will be
holding its annual Gala fundraiser.
As CARPOOL’s largest fundraiser,
Gala celebrates CARPOOL’s past,
present, and future. This year, it
will be held in the Zone at Kyle
Field.
Caitlin Blocker, the current
Director of Gala, is very much
looking forward to the event and
has been so for a while. “I can’t
wait to see everyone having fun,
learning more about what
CARPOOL is about and what we
stand for, and how we cannot
possibly operate without the help of
all of our supporters. By supporters
I mean members,
sponsors, parents, bidders,
patrons, you name it…” During the
evening, Gala will offer a catered
dinner, the thrill of live and silent
auctions, the entertainment of a live
jazz band and dance floor, the
(possible) appearance of the Aggie
Wranglers, and a “surprise” guest
speaker. I asked Caitlin if she
would reveal any details about this
speaker, and she said, “If I told you
anything about them, then it
wouldn’t be a surprise. You will
just have to show up to find out
who it is, but I am extremely
excited that [CARPOOL] was able
to bring this person in.”
When asked what her
favorite thing about serving as the
Director of Gala this year was,
Caitlin responded, “I get to be
creative and see how my ideas
could get passed on for future
planners of this event.” Caitlin’s
favorite thing about the evening of
Gala involves the live auction. “It’s
so fun to see how everyone’s spirits
are high and [everyone]
gets excited about
bidding on items. It’s
a chance to see
everyone smiling.
Really, the entire night is full of
smiles.”
So for just $65, you have
the chance to dress up a bit, eat
some delicious food, listen to
quality entertainment, help support
CARPOOL, and most importantly,
enjoy being surrounded by a group
of people and supporters dedicated
to making Texas A&M and BCS a
safer place! If you are interested in
attending Gala, please register soon
via http://carpool.tamu.edu/gala,
as registration will soon close!

CARPOOL’s endowment is to

held on the morning of April 17th.
For all you early birds out there, the

Without the wonderful
sponsorships and contributions
CARPOOL receives, day-to-day
operations would not be possible.
PR Deputy Director Matt Nidoh
visited with two of CARPOOL’s
generous sponsors this week and
was able to speak with managers
for Raising Cane’s and On the
Border.
My first visit was to
Raising Cane’s where I met Victor,a graduate from Texas A&M who
loves what CARPOOL strives to do
for our community. “I love what
[CARPOOL] stands for, how you
guys save lives every weekend, it’s
unlike anything else…” Cane’s has
been generously providing food for
members during nights of
operations since roughly the Spring
of 2008. When asked about those
services, Victor said with a smile,“About once a month we prepare
food for CARPOOL members to
have, and I’m very happy to do it.
The idea of students coming
together like you all are doing to
serve deserves some food.” Believe
me Victor; we enjoy every chicken
tender, french fry, and piece of toast
we get.
Later I met Bobby, a
manger at On the Border – Mexican Grill & Cantina. When
asked about why he thought On the
Border decided to sponsor
CARPOOL, he said, “…it is a good
cause. We all live in a shared
community, so keeping intoxicated
drivers off the road anywhere really
is always a plus; and especially here
in a college town. It’s essential.”
Story continued on page 6.
These include a longest drive
competition, a closest to the pin
competition, an overall 1st place
winner, and a special award called
the “highest spirit” award. This will
be given to the player exhibiting the
most spirit during the course of the
event.
Prizes will include spirits
provided by Messina Hoff Winery,
authentic autographs from select
Texas A&M alumni that have
moved on to the PGA, St. Arnold’s
root beer mugs, a free round of golf
at Pebble Creek, and a custom golf
bag that the 2010-2011 Golf Committee Chair has personally
designed, just to name a few items.
Michael Johnson, current
Golf Committee Chair and Deputy
Director of Endowment, is very
excited about the arrival of this
event. “I really like golf, so being
able to serve as this year’s Golf
Committee Chair is a pleasure. It’s
also nice to be able to manage
people from a higher perspective. I
don’t often get this chance. And of
course I gain some great experience
out of it…” When asked about his
special guest for the event, Michael
said, “I’m very excited to be able to
have Trelle McCombs here for the
event and be a part of the
entertainment.” Trelle McCombs is
the head coach to the Texas A&M
Women’s Golf Team.
Participating in the
tournament costs $100 a person or
$400 per team. This includes your
registration for the event, one round
of golf, breakfast before, lunch
afterwards, and a nice suntan.

About once a month for roughly 4 years now, On the Border has been allowing CARPOOL the chance to dine on
delicious meals that they make during operations nights. On a side note, Bobby mentioned a personal hobby of his that
CARPOOL actually takes interest in. He smiled as he said, “I like to golf. Whenever I get the time to do it and the weather is
permitting I like to go play around a little bit.” Well Bobby, check out Swing for the Rides and show us your golf game!
Victor and Bobby, thank you and your respective companies for everything you do for us!

Teams, Rides, and Finances
As you may have noticed when viewing the current Director and Exec staff on page 4, our teams have taken on a new
identity. This year our Director of Member Relations, Peter Smith, wanted to completely change the way teams interacted with
one another and what better way to do that than make them each part of a whole? CARPOOL’s 10 teams have had their
numbers removed and replaced with planet’s names from our solar system as well as the asteroid belt. Throughout the course
of this year, team unity has expounded and the energy within CARPOOL has gone out of this world.
At the time this newsletter was written, CARPOOL has given over 182,000 rides! We are currently setting the pace to
break 200,000 rides within the first few weeks of the 2011-2012 school year, CARPOOL’s 12 th anniversary.
Currently our financial situation is stable, sitting at roughly $43,000 in CARPOOL’s operational fund. Though this
will propel us through the rest of the Spring 2011 semester, we are working towards increasing these funds to better prepare next
year’s CARPOOL. To help manage our current funds, we have reduced the number of cars running on a given weekend.
Currently we average about 14 cars per weekend, which helps with our finances, but also increases the wait times for our
patrons. With your continued support we cannot only decrease these wait times, but also gain the ability to reach out to a
greater number of patrons and potentially save a greater number of lives.

Dear Friends of CARPOOL,
As you may recall roughly one year ago, CARPOOL found itself in a large amount of financial trouble which made it necessary to cancel our safe ride operations for the first fewweekends of the Spring 2010 semester. It goes without saying that this was a difficult time in-year history. These events occurred due to a variety of reasons, all of which CARPOOL took full responsibility. The reasons included a lack of proper record keepingand a lost tenacity in consistent fundraising. financialformulated a plan of action, the University, thecommunity of Bryan/College Station, and the Aggie Family came to our rescue. With an
outpouring of motivational support and monetary donations, as well as a newfound focus onfundraising, CARPOOL managed to raise over $115,000 in the remaining weeks of the Spring2010 semester. Humbled, CARPOOL once again regained its status as a thriving organization atTexas A&M. While CARPOOL currently retains its financial stability and has made major organizational strides since Spring 2010, we would like to take this opportunity to share with youour status, in detail, one year after the fact.
CARPOOL has taken the 2010-2011 school year to focus on and correct the technicalproblems which existed in the past by developing methods of proper and thoroughdocumentation, forming an air of professionalism throughout its executive staff, and fosteringproper leadership transitions. The Department of Student Activities at Texas A&M has
developed a brand new website for CARPOOL that streamlines many of our operationalprocesses while producing pertinent and consistent data. Also, the website eases many Separate programs havealso been developed by ambitious and knowledgeable CARPOOL members to help preciselymonitor all monetary proceeds and expenditures to safeguard against the financial mistakes of the past. tribulations last spring, it was realized that to ensure. An ambitious idea was setinto motion for CARPOOL to raise a $240,000 safety net towards our operational fund. Thissafety net will semester while also helping to prevent the cancellation of safe ride operations due to unforeseenfinancial setbacks. n to lay the proper foundation to raise these funds. All
areas of CARPOOL are developing and implementing plans to foster and recognize our sponsor base while our fundraising department has started building the framework for unique andprofitable fundraisers for years to come. To ensure that the events of the past do not reoccur inthe future, focused on generating a comprehensive set of transition materialsto educate the future leaders of this great organization. These materials will help prevent themfrom repeating the mistakes of the past and provide them with innovative ideas for the future. These strides forward will ultimately ensure the repeatable success that is expected of theCARPOOL organization by its patrons, the community, and the University. By envisioning andachieving these strategic and attainable goals, CARPOOL has become more goal-driven andprofessional as a non-profit organization. A

Whereas this year of CARPOOL has been dedicated to ensuring the stability and
professionalism of the organization, the future of CARPOOL will be more focused on itsrelationships with the student body, the community, sponsors, donors, and its own membership. The first step in realizing this vision is to develop
inspire its members to find success in not only CARPOOL, but also in life. The next step will beto actively expand our visibility on campus by becoming more involved with other studentorganizations. To further strengthen these relationships, an old CARPOOL campus-wide eventwill be resurrected. Known as the CARPOOL Olympics, this event will provide a mixing of community sponsors and leaders with student organizations from across campus while alsoincreasing the awareness . To increase our presence in the community,CARPOOL will work towards becoming a greater steward to its many sponsors and donors byproviding them with more recognition and benefits as a result of supporting a non-profit
organization. Ultimately we hope these efforts will not only increase our visibility in thecommunity, but will also solidify our presence in the eyes of other businesses and organizationsthat would not have normally learned of CARPOOLs mission. Over the course of the currentschool year, the framework of CARPOOL has been restructured into a solid foundation that willsupport the organization for years to come. For the rest of 2011 and continuing through theforeseeable future, CARPOOL will branch out of its normal boundaries to regain its status as apremiere student-run organization at Texas A&M.
We hope this brief story helps to instill your trust and faith back into an organization thatonly one year ago suffered a harsh financial complication. CARPOOL is not only running, butwe are thriving on the thought of what the future holds for our organization. This again would
not be possible without the gracious generosity of others and the selfless dedication of our members. We would like to not only thank our sponsors, donors, and patrons; but also theUniversity, Texas A&M Clubs across the nation, Texas A&M alumni, and CARPOOL alumni.Your humbling support is what allows this organization to fulfill its mission day in and day out.The future of CARPOOL is bright and prosperous, but we are always in search of support, be itmonetary donations, novel ideas, or energetic committed members. Next year CARPOOL willbe celebrating its 12th anniversary and will surpass 200,000 given rides! We can and willachieve all of our goals of becoming a sustainable, premiere organization at Texas A&M, butonly with your continued support. If you would like more information on CARPOOL and itsvision for the future, or if you would like to help our mission by making a tax-deductibledonation, please visit http://carpool.tamu.edu or e-mail [email protected].
Sincerely,
! !
