- We finish grammar today :(
2. To finish our two month long discussion of grammar, today we
will discuss some misc grammatical modules which are still
important to know about for college level writing.
3. Quotation Marks!
- The most frequent use of quotation marks is for a direct quote,
whether spoken or written, from an outside source. 4. In 1982, the
band Suicidal Tendencies, was voted best, and worst, band of the
year in Flipside Magazine's annual poll. 5. See note for other uses
of quotation marks and some comments about their usage.
6. Types of Quotes
- Direct quotes present exact words copied from an original
source of less than four lines. 7. According to Signifying Nothing
Fanzine, the band Tragedy, is the best band of the past decade. 8.
Block quotes are quotes that are more than three (poetry) or four
(prose) lines. They are not enclosed in quotation marks, are
displayed on a new line, tabbed over twice, and introduced via a

10. Poetry
- Use quotes around short, less than three lines, quotations of
poetry. 11. Emily Dickinson once wrote, the soul selects her own
society (467). 12. If you have more than one, but less than three,
lines of poetry quoted, use a slash to signify their division. 13.
My favorite lines in Borges' poem Legend are, was it you that
killed me, or did I kill you? / Abel answered. I don't remember any
more; here we are, together, like before (34). 14. Direct dialogue
will be handled the same way you would for citing a direct
quote.
15. Dashes!
- A dash in an interruption to a sentence which adds information.
16. Like parentheses, dashes can set off that extra writing in a
sentence. 17. Alice The Cat dreams of---many nights---adventures
with pirates and bumblebees. 18. Hypertext fiction---a form of
electronic literature---was very popular online during the mid to
late nineties. 19. Use dashes sparingly!
20. Parentheses
- Parentheses interrupt a sentence to add many kinds of
information. Unlike dashes, however, they are used fordeemphasis .

27. Brackets
- Occasionally, you may need to use brackets in your writing.
There are a few ways you can do this. 28. Changing, or adding, a
few words of a quote to fit the structure of your paper. 29.
According to Koenig, They [Los Crudos] are the best band. 30. Put
the Latin word sic (thus) in brackets next to an error in something
you want to quote. Here is an example fromThe DK Handbook : 31. The
student wrote that, The Vikings came to North America long before
Columbus' arrival in 1942 [sic].
32. Ellipsis
- Ellipsis are a series of three spaced dots to show you are
leaving out bits of a writer's original words. 33. Shelley
Jackson's work...has been called essential reading by leading
critics like Scott Esposito.
34. Exclamation Points!!!!!!!
- Ugh, don't use exclamation points. It makes your argument sound
immature. 35. Don't use exclamation points to give commands in your
writings. Readers don't like being bullied by the author.
