Reminiscingonmyfirstmeeting in the early
1990’s,theonlysignificantdifferenceover25 years was that we enjoyed lunch rather thanourcurrentdinner.Isatwithagroupofwomen who shared my orthopaedic interest, eagertosharetheirstoriesandhearmine.Over the decades, the central role of RJOS as forum for us, the female minority, con-tinues.However,wehaveevolvedtooffermorevalue.
Over my year as president, I hope to increase thevalueofyourRJOSmembershipaswellasbuildoursocietybydemonstratingwhatRJOScanbringtoprospectivemembersandtoothersupportingpartners.Forthesociety,my goals this year include:• Enhancethementoringprogram.Grow-
ing women in orthopaedics requires developingthepipeline.Wehopetorollout an online mentoring match in the next fewmonths.
• Aggressivelyexpandmembershipbe-yondwomeninorthopaedics,notablyourmale colleagues and department chairs/programdirectors.
• Broadenresearchandtravelingfellow-ship opportunities support and career development.
• StrengthenRJOSfinancialstatus.Pro-viding programs requires funding and overhead.However,asubsidizedduesstructure which encourages medical studentandresidentmemberslimitsrevenue.

I’m not sure if you can hear the introduction tothissonginyourhead,butasTreasurerofRJOS, money is on the forefront of my mind!! Currently, we are operating in the ‘red’ and havebeenforafewyears.Thebudgetedlossthisyearis$26,000,whichisadeficit.
Our mission is to promote the professional development of and for women in orthopaedics throughout all stages of theircareers.Wefocusonprofessionaldevelopment, mentorship, research, and organizationalexcellence.Weoffermultiplescholarships for medical students and residents to attend the RJOS and AAOS annualmeetings.RJOSalsosupportsacademic traveling fellowships, and funds multipleclinicalandbasicsciencegrants.However,weallknowtheoftenheardphrase: “no money, no mission!”

Sixofthetopeightfinishersinthisyear’sBostonmarathonwereAmericanwomen.Whatthesewomenaredoing–liftingeachotherupandsupportingeachother-it’sworking.
Thisyear’sRJOSMentoringCommitteeisplanningtocapitalizefrom the roaring success of female mentorship.Whatatimetobeawomaninorthopedicsurgery–andeven more so, a mentor to other womeninorthopedicsurgery!Thankyou to all of those who have already helpedgetustowherewearetoday.Thecommitteefinishedmakingthirtynew mentor-mentee matches for the firstquarterof2018,andwithover100active mentors and over 120 eager mentees, the committee has plans to continuethisprocessbyintegratingbettertechnologyandlearningfromthementeesideoftherelationship.Weareexcitedtoannouncethatweare adding a medical student to join
mindfornextyear.Themockexamis geared towards surgeons who will betakingtheirABOSPartIIExaminJuly of that year, as this provides an opportunity to go through cases that havebeenselectedforpresentationduringtherealexam.TheProfessionalDevelopmentCommitteeisalsoworkingcloselywiththementoringcommittee to prepare a couple of articles for AAOS Now related to womeninorthopaedics.Pleasebeonthelookoutfortheseinthecomingmonths!

Womenmakeup10%oftheAmericanOrthopaedicFootandAnkleSociety(AOFAS)membership,yetarefarlesslikelythanmalememberstobespeakingatthepodiumorleadingcommittees.Overthelast18months,AOFAShastakenacloserlookatthisissue and examined the reasons for the underrepresentation of women throughouttheSociety. Inearly2017,wesentasurveytoourfemalemembershipinanattemptto gauge their sense of inclusion, barrierstoorinterestinparticipationwithintheSociety,andobservationsoftheAOFASculture.Thesurveywasdistributedto228femalemembersandcloseto50%responded.Overallthesentimentswerepositive,butmanyrespondentsexpressedalackofunderstanding of the selection process forcommitteemembersandmeetingpresenters.Wealsolearnedthatmanywomenbelievedafemalementorshipprogramwouldbeneficial.

Top Tip for Successful Practice Beresponsive-seepatientsquicklyevenifnot“convenient”.Provideexcellentcaretopatients.Alwaysbecollegialandcollaborativeandavailableforpatientsandconsultingphysicians.Neverbeafraidtoaskforhelpifyoudon’tknowwhattodo.Always try to learn new things even if notinyoursubspecialtyandkeepupwithyourspecialty.
Top Tip in Achieving Work/Life BalanceFindsomethingoutsideofmedicinethatyouarepassionateaboutandcarve out time "protective time" to pursuethatpassion(sports,music,reading,diningout...whatever).Makeyour family a priority even though patients will compete with the time you candevotetofamily.Thiscanbeverydifficult,butitisveryimportant.Also,taketimetocultivaterelationshipswithyourfriends.
Why are you a Member of RJOS? ItstartedbecauseIwascuriouswhenRJOSbecameamemberofCOMSS(NowBOSS).WhenIcametomeetingsIlearnedalotandbecamemore aware of the importance of womeninorthopedics.Womennotonly have much to offer our specialty, theynowmakeupover50%ofmedicalschoolclasses.Sotokeepthe quality of residents we are used to inorthopedics,weneedtofindawaytomakeourspecialtymoreattractivetofemalecandidates.Weneedmorefemalefacultytomakethispossible.
