Colin Spurway, a 2003-05 peacefellow, says the program equipped him tomake the world a more peaceful, just, andsustainable place. Speaking to regionalRotary Foundation coordinators (RRFCs)during a training meeting in Chicago,Spurway thanked The RotaryFoundation for its support of the RotaryCenters for International Studies inpeace and conflict resolution, and heurged the RRFCs to promote them."Only Rotary has the combination offinancial capacity, internationalism,patience, and worldview to invest insomething as imaginative, hopeful,progressive—but intangible—aspeace," he said. Spurway, a native ofScotland, added that peace is not a goalthat can simply be checked off a list."Peace is a continuing process. It is slow,long-term work." In introducing Spurway to the RRFCs,Duane Sterling, Rotary CentersCommittee member and aide to the RIpresident-nominee, suggested that thepeace studies program receives lesspublicity than it deserves. "The RotaryCenters come in right behind polio inpriority," said Sterling. "But we are notgiving it the kind of attention we need tobe giving it. A child dies every 30 seconds of malaria in Africa. In fact malaria isthe fourth-leading cause of death of all children worldwide under fiveyears old. Yet two of the most popular treatments for the disease costless than 15 cents a dose.

Originally from Long Island, NY, Juanita (and husband Rotarian Bill)make their home in West Point where Juanita is the Assistant Superintendentof schools. In addition to her degrees from Cortland and Oklahoma, Juanitaholds a Certificate of Advanced Study from ODU. Juanita is a District 7610 Assistant Governor and two-term President ofthe West Point club. She served as the District Public Image chair, writingtwo $10,000 RI grants for the district. She is a multiple Paul Harris Fellowand a member of the Paul Harris Society. She enjoys gardening, antiques,traveling and history (especially West Point history).

Although initially joining Rotary simply because she was asked to, Juanita has, “found that Ibelieve in what Rotary stands for and want to participate in the many activities, both club anddistrict, that reflect those ideals. I want to give to Rotary and help others.”

Our club responded wonderfully to the visit of the Group Study Exchange team from India onApril 14th – 16th. After being met in Middlesex, the team traveled with Eric Nost to West Point forindividual vocational visits with journalist Robin Lawson, dentist Mark Neale, Farm Bureauinsurance agent Mike Pumo, the medical team from West Point Family Practice, and staff from thefashion design program at VCU. The day was capped off with a reception at Colleen Bonadonna’shome. The next day the team visited Dream Catchers Farm for a presentation before heading toWilliamsburg. A great pizza party was held that evening at the home of Mike and BarbaraMatthews. Following their program for the club Thursday morning, the team continued theirDistrict 7610 visit with the Fredericksburg club. Special thanks to Laurie Carlton for organizing the team visit to West Point, ColleenBonadonna for assisting Laurie. Larry and Renaye Dillon, Elis and Dudley Olsson, Randy andLynn Mathis, Mike and Barbara Matthews, and Colleen Bonadonna for opening their homes forovernight accommodations, and the numerous other club members who provided delicious foodand a warm and generous welcome for our guests from far away.

Laurie Carlton will lead activities during the West Point portion of the team’s visit.
