SPRINGDALE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
New Music Director! We're excited to announce that our new Music Director is
Dr. Warren Broome!
Dr. Broome was the long-time Music Director and Organist of
both Riviera Presbyterian Church in Miami, and Temple Beth
Sholom in Miami Beach, Florida. He has rich experience
with adult, youth and children's choirs, adult and youth bell
choirs, organ and piano. He has produced countless cantatas,
fully staged youth and adult church musical theater, and annual
“cabaret” dinner theater shows. Dr. Broome has extensive
experience in leading music in traditional, contemporary, and
"blended" services that feature a combination of praise,
global, contemporary and traditional sacred music.
In addition, Dr. Broome has served as an Associate Professor of Musical Theater at the University
of Miami; the Associate Conductor and Chorus Master of the Florida Grand Opera, where he
worked with such opera stars as Luciano Pavarotti, Beverly Sills, and others; Music Director of the
Kenley Players Summer Theater; and the Director of the Children's Opera Outreach Program of the
Florida Grand Opera.
Dr. Broome is the spouse of the Rev. Dr. Laurie Kraus, the Coordinator of Presbyterian Disaster
Assistance at the Presbyterian Center here in Louisville.
Warren brings a real depth of experience in music direction and vocal training, and a passion for
excellence in music, that will richly bless both the individual music ensembles and the congregation
at large. He will begin to serve as our Music Director on November 1. If you haven't had an
opportunity to meet him yet during the rehearsals and worship services that he's already been a part
of, please be sure to give him a warm welcome into the Springdale family after he joins us in
November!
All Saints’ Sunday We will be remembering all saints on Sunday, November 5. We are asking for congregants to participate in the lighting of candles in memory of loved ones. If someone wishes to have a candle lit, please use the form on page 10 and turn it in with your Sunday offering or call the church office and speak to Michelle who will help us plan for the candles.
We are also asking congregants to bring in photos of loved ones who because of death, distance or whatever reason cannot be with us. Photos will be placed around the sanctuary so we will be surrounded by our loved ones and church family.

Little Free Library News!
Shout Out to Eddie and Judy Riddle! Little Free Library stewards thank the Riddles for working hard over 4-5 days to reorganize the book collection in Klein Chapel. They labeled shelves with fiction, non fiction, self help, read to me, teen and tween books, holiday, and chapter books. They removed the large gray boxes from Klein Chapel and shelved the books stacked on top of book shelves.
The sorted books enabled the Little Free Library to share surplus books with the Portland Area Community Trust and Family Scholar House. There are four campuses of Family Scholar House in Lou-isville with a fifth to be opened in December. Two have study/library/game rooms. Kristie Adams, VP of Programs and Services, of FSH says, “We appreciate Springdale thinking of us with regular gifts of books.” The mission of FSH is to provide housing for single parents and their children while the parents study for college degrees.
We would like to take this opportunity to say THANK
YOU for the hard work (and what seemed like
endless hours) to the team who has been working
on the new Church Directory. Joy Cashman, Frankie
Moore and Janet Parker attended meetings,
assisted in scheduling, made phone calls,
coordinated the photography sessions and set up
makeup photos with David Dockstader. They did
this all with good humor and love for their
congregation. We appreciate them and offer a
round of applause!
Thank you
Dear Friends from Springdale Presbyterian Church,
Thank you very much to everyone who participated in bringing together the beautiful memorial service for my husband, Dick on Saturday, October 21. The tributes, the prayers, the flowers, the food, the music, the incredible joint choir and the people who offered compassionate words all helped make this a loving way to say, “Goodbye.”
Thank you and I ask God to bless each of you.

A word from the pastor…
Hi friends, I thought I’d give you another update on where we are with staffing matters. As you know, we’ve just chosen Warren Broome to serve as our new Music Director. We’re looking forward to Warren getting settled into the position and digging right into the immediate task of assuring that we have beautiful, diverse, and spiritually nurturing music throughout the upcoming Advent and Christmas season, which is just around the corner. With that decision complete, we’re now ramping up the search for our new Coordinator for Youth Ministry. If you’re curious just what this person will be responsible for, here’s an excerpt from the job posting:
We seek an energetic and enthusiastic individual who can foster opportunities for youth to deepen their faith while fostering lasting connections to the church. The position will report to the Pastor. Responsibilities include:
* Design, plan, and lead long-term youth programs for middle and high school students that enhance their spiritual development
* Assure that all youth programming is designed to instill and support the theology and doctrine of the Presbyterian Church (USA)
* Maintain timely and effective communication with all youth and parents regarding youth ministry programming, planning, scheduling, etc.
* Proactively contact youth and parents within program age ranges to encourage and increase youth participation in programming
* Provide training as needed for adult volunteers involved in youth programming
* Coordinate with Pastor and other worship planners to increase youth attendance and participation in weekly worship
* Coordinate with Music Director and Pastor to develop strategies that increase youth participation in congregational music ministries
* Prepare and track compliance with annual budget for youth ministries and programming In seeking this person, the Personnel Ministry Team and I are following the same process used to fill the Music Director position. We’re currently in the very first phase of this search. As is usually the case, we’ve received a relatively large number of resumes for the position. In order to assist us in accomplishing the initial sorting and filtering needed, all of the applicants whose resumes indicate the appropriate education and experience requirements are being asked to reply to a list of supplemental questions related to their personal faith journey and their understanding of the faith. We want to understand if the theological outlook within which the applicant would perform their duties is generally consistent with that of our own faith tradition. Through that process, we will develop a shortlist of three or four candidates.
(Continued on page 4)
4 www.springdalechurch.org November 2017
The second phase will involve other important “stakeholders” into the process of reviewing these candidates. These interviews will include representatives of the Spiritual Nurture Ministry Team, our youth, and our adult youth volunteers. This group will be responsible for narrowing the search to two candidates. In the third and final phase, each of those two candidates will have an opportunity to lead our PYC activities on two separate occasions. After that, the Personnel Ministry Team will host a listening session with the youth, youth volunteers, and Spiritual Nurture Ministry Team, and will consider all of the inputs received, before ultimately selecting the successful candidate. I hope this additional information helps to let you all know what our process is, where we are in that process now, where we’ll be heading next. I can say that based on what I’ve seen from some of the resumes received to date, I’m encouraged that we’ll soon have an excellent person on board who will connect and work well with our youth. And, as always, if you have any questions about what’s going on as the process unfolds, feel free to contact me. Grace and peace, Dwain

Adult opportunities for education, conversation and service LEARN & SERVE Sundays at 11:15 AM
We have four distinct types of Sunday morning opportunities for adults: the Issues Class, Klein
Chapel Classes, Congregational Conversations and SERVE days.
The Issues Class, which normally meets on the first Sunday of each month between
September and May in Klein Chapel, helps us be people who are open, loving, thinking and
doing by delving into current topics affecting us as citizens of the community and the world.
Klein Chapel Classes meets on most 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays and typically offers
thematic or topical learning in 2 to 6 week series.
Congregational Conversations happen occasionally and center around ideas and
opportunities that are of importance to Springdale.
Congregational SERVE days are scheduled about every 5-6 weeks, are opportunities for
the whole congregation – children through adults – to gather offsite to offer service to or to
serve with another organization or congregation.
Whether you stay because you have children participating in Growing with Grace & Gratitude or
youth participating in Presbyterian Youth Connection, or because you are committed to your own
personal spiritual growth in the context of community, make LEARN & SERVE a priority – you will be
glad you did.

Share the joy of Christmas
TWO GIVING TREES & BLANKET TREE
Beginning Sunday, November 5th, Springdale will offer several ways to share during the Christmas season. We will share with those who live in our neighborhoods and who face many financial and personal problems. We will support the EACM (Eastern Area Christian Ministries) Christmas Store. Your family can buy a new gift or gift card (value $10 - $20) for adults and youth who love to shop on their own. Clothing items with UK/UL college logos are prized. Children still value Disney and various character items, dolls and Lego blocks and small radios. Springdale has pledged to provide 40 gifts for children/adults in need in Jefferson County.
We will also support the Angel Tree of the Prison Fellowship which gives us a way to share Christ’s love with the families of prisoners. Springdale has agreed to provide one new clothing item and one toy or sports item (valued at $15 - $25) for 15 children. Inmates apply for assistance to prison chaplains and suggest gifts for their children. Select one or more gift tags from the Angel Tree Christmas tree in the gathering area beginning Sunday, November 5th.
Bring the EACM gifts unwrapped and the Prison Fellowship Angel Tree gifts wrapped back by December 5th. Or … you can make a donation by cash or check (make checks out to Springdale with EACM gifts or Prison gifts on the memo line.) During mid December through January 8th, we will also be collecting blankets for the homeless of our area. Read more about this in the December newsletter. Blankets are taken to the Collation for the Homeless downtown. Questions? Contact Martha Long at 290-7613 or [email protected] about Prison Angel Tree or Ann Botula at 635-7416 or [email protected] about the EACM Christmas Store. Thank you for your generosity!

Community Conversation—November 19
Marty Pollio is the acting Superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools. He and Steph Horne,
attorney and member of the JCPS Board of Education will join us for our next Community
Conversation. Stagnant test scores, lingering achievement gaps, teacher burn out — these are
some of the dilemmas facing JCPS’ acting Superintendent. Marty Pollio will share his vision for the
school district when we gather from 6:30 to 8 PM in fellowship hall at Springdale Presbyterian
Church.

Coming December 3...
Advent event, potluck, caroling and more...
Mark your calendar for Sunday, December 3rd! At 4:30 PM come to our Advent Event and do some
new crafts in the lower level gathering area (just outside of fellowship hall.) There will be things to
make and do for all ages. Some crafts are for individual children (of all ages), some are for individual
adults and some are for families to do together.
At 6 PM we will move to fellowship hall for our Advent Potluck. Bring something to share. After we’ve
eaten and enjoyed some time together we will sing carols around the tables. You will be headed
home no later than 7:30 PM.
We are collecting boxes of similar size and sturdiness as copier paper boxes and leftover Christmas
wrapping paper for the craft time. Please place donations on the marked table in room 212.
All Saints’ Sunday — November 5th
We will observe All Saints’ Sunday on November 5th, during our regular worship service. During
this time, we will remember all of those members who have passed away since All Saints’ Day
2016, as well as any others whom you would like to remember. Each person will be listed in the
bulletin. They will also be named during the service, and when their name is called, a family
member (or members) will be invited to come forward and light a small candle in their memory.
If you would like to have a person included in our remembrance, please let the office know. You
can call or email the office with the information, or you can use the form below – just fill it out, cut
or tear it off, and either mail it to us or drop it in the offering plate on Sunday morning. Please be
sure to spell individuals’ names properly and clearly; we’d hate to make a mistake when listing
them in the bulletin.
