Abstract:Where Did This Topic Stem From?
• In working for the University at Albany as an Academic Advisor I have made friends with many faculty members. This past summer when having lunch with one of these faculty members she told me that while administering an open notebook test in a large lecture style chemistry class she noticed a young man looking at his watch quite a bit. She later noticed that it was in fact a smart watch and the young man was receiving text messages with the answers to the exam.
• The purpose of this project is to investigate the types of high-tech cheating in order to determine whether or not it is ethical to use technology to aid in academics. This project also not only identified types of high-tech cheating but explored ways in which to prevent this type of cheating from occurring in online and in classroom environments.
High-tech Cheating: What it’s not and what it is
• Within our society the word cheating can have different definitions.
• High-tech cheating is not talking about “infidelity” and the internet.
• I am referring to using technology to perform acts of academic dishonesty.
Academic Dishonesty“Academic dishonesty or cheating includes acts of plagiarism, forgery, fabrication or misrepresentation, such as the following:
• Claiming the work or thoughts of others as your own
• Copying the writing of others into your written work without appropriate attribution
• Writing papers for other students or allowing them to submit your work as their own
• Buying papers and turning them in as your own
• Having someone else write or create all or part of the content of your assignments
• Submitting the same paper for more than one study or class without explicit permission from the faculty members
• Making up or changing data for a research project
• Fabricating and/or altering documents and/or information in support of the degree program.

Common Types of High-tech Cheating
• Waiting for and Looking up Answers:
• False Error Messages when Accessing Assignments
• Collusion, Deception and the Creation of “Cheating Rings”
• Plagiarism
• Paying for Answers

Ways to Prevent High-tech Cheating
• Software settings on online course sites that block students from accessing other content
• Use of proctors in large class setting so that technology is monitored
• Variety of software that detects plagiarism and although this may be useful to an instructor
• Institutions need to update their policies and educate students on what constitutes high-tech cheating
