Dear Alumni, Students and Friends,Albert Einstein said, “It is every man’s obligation to put back into the worldat least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.”
This issue of Invention is dedicated to people and organizations who havefollowed Einstein’s advice. Their generous support enables Thomas EdisonState College to continue to fulfill its mission to provide flexible, high-quality,collegiate learning opportunities for self-directed adults wherever they live orwork.
Each year, alumni, businesses, corporations and employees of Thomas EdisonState College make substantial financial contributions that allow the Collegeto increase enrollment, expand our academic enterprise and maintain ourdedication to adult learners.
In this edition, you will read about two graduates who embody the spirit ofThomas Edison State College.
One is Rolando Gorostiza ’07, a manager for L’Oreal USA, who was selectedas this year’s Adult Learner of the Year by the American Council onEducation. This husband and father of three recalls the experience ofcompleting his degree at Thomas Edison State College at the same time hischildren were pursuing their own college educations.
The other is Lt. Jason Anderson ’06, a member of the U.S. Army NationalGuard, who finished his degree while serving in Iraq. Lt. Anderson tells ushow Thomas Edison State College courses on Islam helped him understandthe people and places he encountered during his deployment.
These graduates’ stories illustrate the importance of Thomas Edison StateCollege’s mission and the financial support we receive every year from loyaldonors, including the Thomas Edison State College Foundation.

A GRADUATE COHORT CANBE MANY THINGS.
It can be a peer group or an academicunit, with members often collaboratingon completing course work toward theirdegree.
It is in its unofficial capacity, however, that a master’s cohort truly shines.
For Stephen Theisen, Antonio Doria, EstherVelázquez, William Strain and Eric Percival, who each earned a Master of Science inManagement in 2007, their cohort alsoserved as a crucial sounding board, supportgroup and safe haven during one of themost transformative and rigorous passagesof their academic careers.
“During the months of hard work, reading, research papers and nonexistentsocial lives, we provided each other withmoral support,” said Velázquez. “Nomatter what happened during ourstrenuous studies, we wouldn’t alloweach other to give up.”
For students fortunate enough to findthemselves surrounded by such support, the rewards are obvious.
“As a team of five, we were each others’academic and emotional support system,”said Velázquez, who works as a technicalwriter for a financial firm. “We provided
encouragement and a ready ear if one ofour members was floundering. At onepoint, I was going through a rough patchand seriously considered dropping mycourses. I shared my frustration withfellow cohort member Eric Percival. Hiswords of understanding, encouragementand advice were enough to make me hangin there.”
Graduate-level course work typicallyconsists of reading required chapters, articles and case studies, thensubsequently researching, analyzing andinterpreting the material. More often thannot, students bring their professionalexperiences to the online discussions andintegrate theories with practice.
“During a typical assignment, we wouldread numerous articles or text andrespond to questions posted by ourgraduate mentor on the DiscussionBoard,” said Theisen, who is currentlypursuing a Graduate Certificate in Online
Learning and Teaching. “We would alsorespond to questions or comments fromother students. The assignments honedour leadership skills and encouraged us tocollaborate with each other on aprofessional level.”
Cohort members cited the program’saffordability and quality as the mostcompelling reasons for pursuing theirdegrees at Thomas Edison State College.Access to quality mentors was also animportant part of their experience at theCollege.
“I was pleasantly surprised at how eagerour mentors were to hear from us andhow generous they were with their time,”said Velázquez. “I would encourage allstudents – graduate and undergraduate –to establish communication with theirmentors early and often in their coursework.”
Collegiality such as this often enduresbeyond commencement, with membersstaying in close contact and oftenbuilding on their earlier accomplish-ments.
“We plan to stay in touch with eachother,” added Theisen. “My belief is thatwe have become a ‘family’ over the 18months we’ve been together and willcontinue to share significant events witheach other. Antonio [Doria] is nowplanning to pursue his doctorate degreeand I know Esther is doing the same. Ifeel privileged to have met and becomefriends with these folks. If it had not beenfor Thomas Edison State College, I wouldhave never gained such excellentfriendships.”

WHEN LT. JASON ANDERSON STEPPED OFF THE C-130TRANSPORT PLANE IN IRAQ, HE IMMEDIATELY REALIZEDHOW FAR AWAY HE WAS FROM HIS HOME INMINNESOTA.
As Anderson stood on the runway at Tallil Air Base, wearing 50pounds of body armor and hauling his gear, the temperaturewas racing toward 100 degrees in April.
“When the transport door opened, it was just like a blast fur-nace,” recalled Anderson BA ’06. “Under most conditions, abreeze would provide some relief; but over there, the windmerely served as a vehicle for more heat and dust.”
In addition to beginning his tour of duty in the world’s mostdangerous war zone, Anderson was about to begin takingcourses to earn a college degree through the Military DegreeCompletion Program at Thomas Edison State College.
But before he started, Anderson established a routine to stayon track academically without interfering with his militaryservice.
Anderson worked 10- to 14-hour shifts each night. As anintelligence staff officer, he was responsible for operations, intelligence tracking, operational security, section counselingand management and anti-terrorism protection.
“My military work consisted of a series of ongoing projects,”said Anderson. “I was assigned to conduct vulnerabilityassessments for battalions and convoy escort teams in a num-ber of radio relay points and small combat outposts stretchedalong hundreds of miles of supply routes. The processundoubtedly saved lives daily.”
For Anderson and his unit members, the fevered pitch rarelysubsided.
“Each member of my unit worked extraordinarily hard. Therewas barely time for anything except our mission for the firstthree months in theater,” he said. “Once my courses began, Icame in early or worked late in order to have the Internetaccess I needed for online Discussion Groups and submittingassignments.”
Anderson said his course work on Islam helped him reinforcehis understanding of the Sunni/Shea conflict in the Mideast. He asserts that his grasp of the cultural makeup of the areawas at least as important as his tactical understanding.
“I studied the effect Christianity had in the creation of Islam,”said Anderson. “Other topics covered were the Koran, Islamiclaw, prayer and understanding extremist behavior. There are
also many historic and religious sites in Iraq, some of which Ihave seen after reading about them. My unit also encounteredMuslims participating in Ramadan and the Hajj. The courses Itook helped me understand the significance of their religiousobservances and respect their dates and rituals.”
Anderson always wanted to be a soldier. He is known byfriends and family as being analytical and staunchly patriotic, and originally served three years of active duty as a U.S. ArmyCalvary Scout. He looked forward to the college education hewould earn when he felt ready for it.
He was home from duty in Bosnia-Herzegovina when he andhis family turned on the television one sunny Septembermorning to watch United Airlines Flight 175 dissolve into theside of the World Trade Center. The event deepened his focuson family and country.
“When I originally joined the Army, I don’t think service to mycountry was as paramount as it is now,” he said. “Now that Ihave children, I feel it’s imperative for them to have secure, successful and happy lives.”

But he did. The American Councilon Education (ACE), which presentsthe ACE Adult Learner of the YearAward annually to an adult learner wholeverages professional training that hasbeen evaluated by ACE’s CollegeCredit Recommendation Service toadvance their education or career, saw something special in Gorostiza,a resident of Delran, N.J.
“Rolando’s entry jumped out at us”said Deborah Ross Warin, assistantdirector of Program Evaluations atACE. “The nomination, submittedby his son and supported by an actingdean and a mentor from ThomasEdison State College, was aunanimous favorite among ourjudges.”
Recipients must demonstrateoutstanding achievement in theircommunity or workplace whilesuccessfully balancing the demands offamily, career and education. TheACE review process validatedGorostiza’s certifications andprofessional training provided by hisemployer, L’Oreal USA in Clark, N.J.,for college credits.
In February, Gorostiza traveled to SanDiego, Calif., to be honored at theAmerican Council on Education’sAnnual Meeting, where he received
the award with family members andThomas Edison State CollegePresident Dr. George Pruitt inattendance.
“About two years ago, my childrenwere poised to transfer theircommunity college credits to four-year institutions,” said Gorostiza, anengineer with 25 years of experiencein consumer products, manufacturingprocesses and teaching. “I encouragedthem to pursue their studies, and todo so while they were young. Yet I feltmy words were hollow because I did
not possess the college degree that Iwas so eager for them to obtain.”
If fatherhood taught him anything, itwas that actions speak louder thanwords.
In 2005, the Computer AssistedDesign (CAD) engineer and managerfor L’Oreal USA, enrolled in theBachelor of Science in AppliedScience and Technology (BSAST)degree program at Thomas EdisonState College.
“I was exhausted some of the time, but the academic spirit in the housewas intoxicating! I never knew I lovedschool so much. It also affirmed whatI had suspected – that academicfervor is best conveyed by example,”said Gorostiza.
It was an example made all the moreindelible as he approached center-stage to collect his degree as well as anArnold Fletcher Award forexceptional achievement during theCollege’s 35th Commencementceremonies in October.
When Rolando Gorostiza decided to return to collegeto complete his degree, he thought he would set a goodexample for his children and achieve a goal he startedearlier in life.
Like many adults who return to school, Gorostiza hadchildren who were also pursuing college degrees at thetime, and he prepared for long nights of studying in ahome full of learners. One thing he never expected todo was earn a national education award along with hiscollege degree.

“As a Thomas Edison State CollegeArnold Fletcher Award recipient,Rolando exemplifies achievement innontraditional learning,” said ThomasDevine, acting dean of the School ofApplied Science and Technology. “Weare very proud of all of our graduates, and particularly proud of students likeRolando. Students selected for thisaward have demonstrated excellence inutilizing innovative learning modes.”
Gorostiza completed his degree in 19months at Thomas Edison StateCollege.
“When I applied to Thomas EdisonState College, I had 40 credits trans-ferred from other insti-tutions. I also trans-ferred the credit equiva-lency of 19 courses viaACE; credits in English, humanities, social sci-ences and math viaCLEP; and 36 creditsvia the Prior LearningAssessment (PLA) pro-gram at the College, which was an efficientway of earning credits by documentingcollege-level knowledge.”
His employer, L’Oreal USA, a strongadvocate of career and academicadvancement for its employees, provid-ed tuition reimbursement.
“We are very pleased to see that ACEhas chosen one of our employees tohonor as Adult Learner of the Yearfor 2007,” noted Patrick Cafaro, vicepresident of Human Resources forL’Oreal USA. “We have alwaysencouraged employees to attain their
college degrees via our tuitionreimbursement program. Thisinvestment in our people is one thatbenefits all concerned — from theemployees, to their families and backto the company. We are proud of
Rolando for this accomplishment aswell as his drive to persevere on hisown time to achieve his bachelor'sdegree at Thomas Edison StateCollege.”
Gorostiza has been married for 28years to his high school sweetheart,
Silvia, who has justtransferred her own creditsinto a baccalaureate degreeprogram at ThomasEdison State College. Thecouple has a daughter,Jillian, who is pursuing herBachelor of Arts degree inpsychology from RiderUniversity; and two sons,Gabriel, who recentlyearned an associates
degree from Burlington CountyCollege; and Michael, who iscurrently pursuing a baccalaureatedegree in music theory andcomposition with a minor in biologyat Westminster Choir College ofRider University.
“In this changing world, a degree isproof that a person is disciplinedenough to meet deadlines, to reason, learn, think analytically and followthrough,” said Gorostiza.

Dear Alumni, Students and Friends,It is my privilege to present you with the 2007 edition of the Thomas EdisonState College Foundation Honor Roll of Donors.
On behalf of the Foundation, we extend our sincere thanks to everyone whoprovided financial support this year. Your contributions play a key role inenhancing and expanding the unique programs that Thomas Edison StateCollege offers to adult learners throughout the world.
This year, the Foundation committed nearly $120,000 to create a newProvost’s Fund focused on developing new academic programs and courses. This new resource is used at the discretion of the provost and enables theCollege to respond quickly to the needs of our students, including thoseserving in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the corporate sector.
Also this year, several new endowments were created. Endowments secure the future of the institution andprovide an essential and reliable source of funding to develop new degree programs and partnerships thatbenefit adult learners.
Your support established the Dr. George A. Pruitt Presidential Endowed Scholarship Fund – the College’sfirst scholarship exclusively for graduate students. The following alumni also created new endowments:Michael Brewster ’93 and Raymond Koski ’93. To date, 20 endowments have been established by friendsand alumni of the College and 15 others were established by Foundation Board members. Endowmentscreate permanent sources of revenue that greatly increase the College’s ability to improve course deliveryand build new degree programs. If you are interested in learning more about how you can establish a named endowment to preserve a personal legacy, please contact the Office of Development at (609) 984-1588 for additional information.
As we continue our work, it is important to remember how critical your donation is to the College. As inprevious years, public funding for higher education continues to be reduced, especially here in New Jersey.Your support enables Thomas Edison State College to continue its mission to serve adult learners.
Your support, in whichever form you choose, secures the future of this extraordinary institution and makesthe success of Thomas Edison State College possible.
Sincerely,
John P. Neary
