R iverdale teens are kicking up a storm.
Those twirling, stomping and snapping across the stage
in the Riverdale Rising Stars’ upcoming Footloose production are bound to make an impression on the audience, says stage manager Catherine Schwartz.
“The dancing is so much fun. If there’s one thing on stage that’s con-tagious, it’s their energy,” said Ms. Schwartz.
Directed by Laurie Walton, the per-formance follows a boy’s move from a big city to the narrow-minded town of Bomont, Utah, where he and the min-ister’s daughter rouse their peers into fighting against the city’s ban on danc-ing. Their protest is choreographed to the tune of several pop sensations, in-cluding “Almost Paradise,” “Holding out for a Hero,” and “Footloose.”
About 30 teens have spent the past three months preparing for the musical, which was adapted from the 1984 film Footloose.
Riverdale Rising Stars is a 12-year-old Riverdale YM-YWHA initiative that invites 12 to 18 year olds to take theater classes and workshops and audition for parts in professional productions.
Ms. Walton said the current crop
has a knack for tapping and twirling, so she’s opted to stage more dance-filled productions in recent years. Her daugh-ter, Emily Walton, choreographed the show to a rock score.
“The number ‘Footloose,’ it’s at the beginning and the end, and that’s the first dance they learned with Emily. They love it and you can really tell,” Lau-rie Walton said. “No matter how silly the story is, the music is so infectious and so 80s you can’t help but have a good time.”
Dancing aside, Footloose offers some-thing for all generations, according to Ms. Schwartz.
“They’re playing teenagers a lot of them, so they’re playing what’s familiar to them,” she said. “And the audience, while everybody knows it, it’s a classic story with a heartwarming message.”
The Riverdale Rising Stars will per-form Footloose at the Riverdale Y’s Neu-wirth Theatre, located at 5625 Arlington Ave., on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 8 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m.; Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m.
Tickets cost $20 for adults, $12 for se-nior citizens and $12 for students.

What homeowner has not lamented that they have many more belongings than they have storage space?
In some homes, particularly in older homes, closet space and other areas to store items may be lacking.
Apartment dwellers often find they’re lacking in storage space as well. But savvy hom-eowners can find both perma-nent and temporary solutions to their home storage problems.
One of the easiest ways to create storage space is to sim-ply remove some belongings from the residence.
Go through closets around the house and pick through the attic and/or garage to see if there are any items that can be discarded or donated.
Items that are broken can be discarded, while those things that still have utility can be do-nated or sold.
The next step is to maximize the space of your existing clos-
ets. Many closets are equipped with just a shelf and a clothing rack, greatly limiting the stor-age potential.
Closet organizer
Investing in a closet orga-nization system is one way to transform a poorly utilized space. These systems can be purchased, often inexpensively, from a home improvement cen-ter or hardware store.
Compiled of modular racks and shelving, the positioning can be customized depending on the size of the closet. Often-times, the addition of shelving or another rack for hanging clothes can solve some storage issues.
These closet systems also are ideal for renters because they can be installed with mini-mal damage and be removed when a lease expires.
Homeowners may have to think vertically to solve storage solutions. Wall space may be
abundant in a home where clos-ets are not. Therefore, shelving and cabinets can be places to keep items neatly off the floor.
A series of shelves can be installed next to a washing ma-chine to keep laundry supplies organized.
In children’s rooms, build bookcases the height of the room so children can store fre-quently used reading material and toys on the lower levels, and adults can put collectibles and mementos near the top.
Hang hooks to hold hats and robes. Whenever possible, look to store items on the walls where they will keep clutter off the floor.
Bathroom storage
Storage can even be cre-ated in the bathroom, where the space over the toilet can be used to hang a cabinet to store hand towels and other toiletries if the space under the sink has already been claimed.
Many apartment dwellers recognize the advantage of hav-ing items that serve double-du-ty in their living spaces.
For example, a convertible sofa can be used for sitting and then turn into a bed for over-night guests.
Ottomans that have a stor-age compartment can house anything from throw blankets to magazines. An armoire may house the television but also have a pull-out shelf that can hold a laptop computer.
In the kitchen, move food items out of cabinetry and into a “pantry” you create elsewhere in the house, such as a laundry room or garage. This frees up more room for pots and pans.
Cabinets that have pull-out shelving help maximize tight recesses of cabinets and keep things organized and in sight. For those with limited cabinets, pots and pans can be hung from a pot rack suspended in the kitchen. — Metro
Small space? Not enough storage? No problem
MESSY CLOSETS and clutter elsewhere in the home may justbe caused by a storage deficit.

Home of the weekEugenia C. Foxworth/Foxworth Realty
A two-bedroom co-opwith archways galore
It is impossible to look at this two-bedroom, one-bathroom co-op at 3017 Riverdale Ave. and not be struck by the unique beauty of its lines.
The common areas of the apartment are connected by a series of magnificent archways. The first welcomes guests as they walk past the foyer. Another archway — larger and even grander — connects the dining room to the liv-ing room, while still another is a passageway to the bedroom area.
Though the home maintains its artful prewar design of oak panel floors, archways and high ceilings, it has also been completely modern-ized.
The bright eat-in kitchen has new stainless steel appliances, Italian tile floors and backs-
plash, sprawling counter space and a large pan-try.
The living room has three windows and views of the courtyard. The dining room has a ceiling fan and recessed shelving, carefully designed in the shape of the surrounding arch-ways.
The master bedroom has three windows with westerly and southern views. The second bedroom has two windows that face north.
The apartment building’s exterior has an art deco lobby, an Italian hand laid stone entrance and a Zen fountain. The building is conveniently located, close to shopping areas and transporta-tion.
Eugenia C. Foxworth listed the co-op for $299,500.
Clockwise from top:
The living room features hardwood floors.
The master bedroom is spacious.
The eat-in kitchen features warm tones and large floor tiles.
The kitchen has white cabinets and high-end appliances.
A newly renovated bathroom features Italian marble wall tiles and an elegant oval vanity.

How many times have you stood in front of your fridge feeling ravenous? You open the door, gaze around, shut the door and open the pantry. Hmmm. Crackers? Cookies? Pasta? Rice?
Sugar cravings can be strong. In fact, many people I know will go out on a freezing January night just for a Snickers bar or frozen yogurt piled high with crazy amounts of Heath Bar and crushed Oreos.
So how do you combat these cravings? If you eat carbs mod-estly most of the time, don’t beat yourself up over the occa-sional slip. But when you need a couple of Magnolia cupcakes or even an entire pound of grapes to get you through the night, this is rather junkie-like behav-ior. I was once derailed by an Italian bakery on my way to the gym.
A cannoli, sfogliatelle, cup-cake and tiramisu later, I lay on my couch, cursing myself, the baker and the woman who sold me the pastries. Mapping out an alternate route to my spin class, I had an epiphany. I’m a sugar addict.
After realizing this, I tried to employ a few methods to help
kick my addiction. Besides eliminating sugars and sweet-eners from my coffee and tea, I omitted them entirely for a few weeks to kick-start my weight loss.
Here’s a list of strategies that helped me.
Get rid of the junk
Toss out all the major of-fenders in your kitchen. That means sugary anything and includes artificial sweeteners, which actually create sugar
cravings. Also, toss the pro-cessed foods like crackers, pretzels and tortilla chips. Save these for the occasional party or get together.
Eat Fruit
Try having a small piece of fruit in the morning and a cup of berries in the afternoon to help control and curb cravings later at night. If you’re having an out-of-control craving, a small piece of fruit is always a better option than a box of cookies.
Drink Water
Often times we think we’re hungry when, actually, our bod-ies are dehydrated and need wa-ter. If you’re having a craving, slowly drink two glasses of wa-ter or an unsweetened hot cup of peppermint or ginger tea. If your urine is yellow, you need to drink more water.
Sleep it off
Late-night cravings can do you in. Try simply brushing
and flossing your teeth, getting in bed and reading a book or magazine to relax and fall asleep. If your mouth is clean and your hands are otherwise occupied, you’re less likely to snack.
Crunch
Snacking is all about satiation. Sometimes it’s sweet, sometimes salty, but often it’s something with crunch. Instead of chips, try a handful of roasted nuts or crunchy veggies like jicama, kohlrabi, carrots, cucumbers and
celery. Always have something precut and ready to eat.
Comfort
If you have to give into a late-night craving, try going for something like a bowl of a hot vegetable soup or broth, either one you’ve prepared ahead of time or a very low sodium, store-bought option. Often we want something to make us feel cozy, warm and full and soup is a much better solution than a huge bowl of pasta.
What’s cooking?
Gonna have to face it, you’re addicted to sugar
Maximizeyour shower’s inner spa
The routine you follow in the shower is a personal one and studies show it can serve a number of different purposes. From getting clean to warming up, from relieving pain to simply relaxing, we shower for many reasons. Research indicates that even the order in which we bathe ourselves, shampoo, soap then rinse or shave, wash and condition — can hold different meanings.
Whether it’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning or part of your daily workout or bedtime ritual, these simple and cost-effective tips can help you make the most of your shower experience:
Update your showerhead
One of the most important elements of a good shower is the shower fixture itself. From water temperature and spray pattern to the force of the stream and coverage, many variables can impact your ex-perience. If your shower leaves something to be desired, it may be time to replace your shower-head.
Select the scents that complement
Studies have shown that certain smells can affect our moods. In fact, aromatherapy, a practice in which scents are used to help relax the mind and body, has been around for more than a century. Choose fra-grances that complement your shower to get the biggest bene-fit each day. For example, soaps infused with rosemary and eu-calyptus may help soothe sore or tired muscles at the end of the day, while a lively citrus or mint shampoo used during ear-ly morning bathing may refresh your senses and help wake you up before work.
Amplify your shower with sound
There’s a reason many peo-ple enjoy singing in the shower; music can help elevate your mood. According to a 2011 re-port from The Mayo Clinic, mu-sic can also offer certain health benefits, including reducing pain or helping boost memory. Even silence can be soothing, providing a thoughtful backdrop to think, reflect or meditate.
You can even create unique playlists for different shower scenarios. A series of classical melodies might be ideal for re-lieving stress, while a pop mix could help set the stage for a weekend out.
Employing these simple steps can help make your show-er a more satisfying part of your daily routine and update your entire experience in a budget-friendly way. — BPT
