Principal’s Message
Dear Parents,
August is a month we celebrate our nation’s birthday. This year, as we
celebrate Singapore’s 51st birthday, we want to focus on building up our
students into responsible and sincere citizens. NCPS is a caring and inclusive
school and we want our students to continue to have this mindset with them
when they grow up.
Let us set the right tone for our children, ingrain in them the right mindset and
values, so that they can grow into citizens of good character and build the
long-lasting friendship with their peers.
As National Day is approaching, I want to wish Singapore a Happy 51st Birthday!

A Step Towards Holistic Education
Over the years, MOE has made sustained
efforts to nurture well-rounded individuals by:
Developing our students in every
domain of learning (e.g. Increased
emphasis on Physical Education, Art and
Music);
Equipping students with the skills, values and competencies that they
need to succeed in life (e.g. Programme for Active Learning, Outdoor
Education Masterplan);
Diversifying the school landscape (e.g. Applied Learning Programme,
Learning for Life Programme); and
Providing multiple pathways at various stages of our education system
These efforts are aimed at moving away from an overemphasis on academic
results and providing students with more opportunities to discover and develop
their strengths and interests.
As announced by MOE, the changes to PSLE Scoring and Secondary 1 Posting
are part of this larger shift and aims to:
Reduce the fine differentiation of students at a young age based on
examination scores
Reflect students’ individual level of achievement, regardless of how his
peers have done
Encourage parents and students to select schools based on their
suitability for the child’s learning needs, talents and interests.
The PSLE changes alone will not be enough. All of us—educators, parents and
the community-at-large—need to play our part in making this paradigm shift
to free up time and space for holistic education. Let us work together to write
the next chapter of this story.
Please visit the MOE PSLE microsite for more details on the PSLE changes.

Words of Appreciation – Teachers, Staff and Service Providers Appreciation
Day 2016
The school will be celebrating Teachers’ Day on 1
September 2016, Thursday. We understand that
students may wish to express their appreciation to
their teachers on this occasion. However, as civil
servants, teachers will not be able to accept gifts of
monetary value from our students and parents.
Hence, we would appreciate if you could explain to
your child that there is no need to buy gifts for their
teachers on this occasion. Instead, we would prefer
the students to express their appreciation for their teachers through simple and
thoughtful ways such as presenting them with handmade cards and crafts.
At the same time, we like to invite parents and students to share your
experience of the teachers, staff and service providers (e.g school bus, book-
shop, student care centre) who have performed their duties with dedication
and excellence. Please tell us what you treasure most about the staff who has
impacted your child positively. It will be helpful if you can give concrete
examples, specific evidence or other detailed descriptions of what the staff
has done for your child.
You may write in to the school through the school’s email, [email protected]
or submit a hard copy to the General Office. In your email or letter, please
kindly state:
Your name, email and contact number
Your child’s name and class
Name of teacher(s) or staff (including service providers) you are
complimenting
Please write in to us before 26 August 2016. Your words of appreciation will
encourage our NCPS staff to do even better!

National Environmental Agency (NEA) Concerns and Road Safety
NEA had informed the school that they received feedback
from nearby residents that our parents have left their vehicles
with idling engines in the school’s neighbourhood while
waiting for their children after school. Under the
environmental protection and management (vehicular
emissions) regulations, it is an offence to leave the vehicle
engine running when it is stationary for reasons other than
traffic conditions. Errant motorists will be liable to a
compound fine or a court fine not exceeding $5,000. NEA will
take necessary enforcement action for such inconsiderate drivers. Idling
engine not only emits more pollutants which are harmful to health but also
poses fumes nuisance to nearby residents.
For a clean and safe environment, please allow your child to alight only at the
designated drop-off point, i.e. Gate C. All parents who wish to park their
vehicles must do so at the public carpark (Block 318) opposite the school.
Thank you for the cooperation.

It was a wonderful bonding session for the
teachers and students as they carried out the
meaningful activity together. Through this
activity, students demonstrated the value of
responsibility and respect in their effort in building
a sustainable environment for Singapore. The
students also develop their confidences through
interactions with the residents.
Collectively we collected 3,970kg of newspapers and
926kg of clothing. It has been a positive and
enriching experience for the students as they journey
towards becoming active contributors and
concerned citizens of Singapore.
School Exchange Programme
The students from Xin Zhi Primary
School, Xi’An, visited our school for a
school exchange programme on 7
July 2016. The objectives of the
exchange programme are to
provide opportunities for our
students to broaden their horizon
and international perspective and to exchange ideas/ experiences with their
counterparts in Xi’An. Our school arranged for the visitors to have classroom
experience and outdoor team-building games. Our students also performed a
piece on the xylophone for the guests and shared with them on how to handle
some of the musical instruments. We hope that we have enriched our guests
in their experiences through the school exchange programme.

NCPS Choir @ Joyful Sengkang West 10th Anniversary Celebration
On 10 July (Sunday), our NCPS choir joined more than 5,000 residents and
grassroots leaders of Sengkang West at an open-air carnival near Anchorvale
Community Club to celebrate their constituency's 10th anniversary. We were
honoured to be selected as part of the three-generation choir performance
to serve the community with our tuneful singing. The students were eager to do
their part for the community by filling the place with their melodious voices.
Assembly Programme : Singapore Writers
The National Reading Movement is a
5-year campaign by the National
Library Board (NLB) to encourage all to
Read More, Read Widely and Read
Together. It is also our passion to build
the reading culture in our school. The
best gift that we can bestow our
students is to help them to develop the
love of reading and possess the skill of
acquiring knowledge by themselves,
to become independent avid readers. Our school invited two Singapore
writers, Ms Eliza Teoh (writer of Ellie Belly series) and Ms Gabby Tye (writer of
trilogy RunHideSeek) for a concurrent assembly talk on 16 July 2016. The writers
spoke to the students on their writing journey and what gave them the
inspiration for their stories. The upper Primary students were deeply motivated
by Ms Tye’s sharing on how she had written and published her trilogy at the
young age of 15. The students’ interest in reading and creative writing rose and
their motivation were being spurred to a higher level. Some of the Primary 1

and 2 students even brought their own copies of the Ellie Belly series storybooks
to be autographed by Ms Eliza Teoh.
Racial Harmony Day Celebration
Racial Harmony Day (RHD) was observed on 21 July 2016.
It is celebrated annually to encourage our students to
value Singapore’s cultural diversity. At the RHD concert,
students were entertained with a play “Town Mouse and
Country Mouse”, a story about social cohesion and
inclusiveness. During recess, the students enjoyed
traditional food and games. It was a wonderful way to
conclude the day and to celebrate our nation where races live together in
peace and harmony.
Hari Raya Puasa Celebration
To join our students in celebrating Hari Raya Puasa, our school had prepared
a series of activities for the students. The students were entertained by the
students and staff in a silat dance. They watched a fashion parade of the
