Page 2: Riggs Partners CreateAthon 2011

It’s CreateAthon! The best day of the year! We reach the front door together and smile covertly in the knowing that ahead lies 24+ intense hours in which we, and 30 volunteers, will be tested to our creative cores with start-to-finish projects for nine worthy nonprofits.

And then Peyton does a headstand and a gigantic penguin rounds the kitchen corner and Kevin parades through the building in Tim’s Haz-Mat suit and we all laugh deep and hearty and reach for just one or two more Sara Made Those cookies. And then we are back at it.

And the sun comes up, and the shiny and showered nonprofit clients arrive, and we usher them to little meeting rooms where we show & tell them the stories of the work we’ve created and the ways we think it will help them do what they do a little bit better. And they look us deep in our eyes, all the way to our hearts, and say:

You will never know what this means to us. You will never know what a difference you have made.

And we tear up and exhale and eventually go home, spent and happy. And we fall into the most peaceful sleep, thinking of the work, and the people, satisfied that we’ve done something together, something good, something important. Knowing it was, indeed, no question, without a doubt, the very best day of the year.

Looming:

• A whirlwind of BRIEFINGS AND BRAINSTORMING. Followed quickly by

• LET’S DO THIS, during which you confidently stare at your sketchbook hoping a great idea will magically surface. Then comes

• I HAVE THE ONE PROJECT IN THE WORLD THAT HAS NO SOLUTION. And still you carry on until along comes

• A passerby who glances at your screen and offers an encouraging word, a little i love that and you think, that? really? maybe i sort of love that, too, and you look at it anew and see its potential. And you put on your head-phones and buckle down, getting it done, seeing it through. In no time it is 2 a.m., and

• THE WITCHING HOUR, and a wave of questioning moves through the building, team to team, office to office, sketchbook to sketchbook. – This will never work. – What were we thinking? – Maybe we should just start over. – We’ll never finish in time.

OUR SERVICES

Since 2005, PASOs has served as a connector between

South Carolina’s Latino families and improved maternal and child

health. Studies show Latina women need more information about

prenatal care and have limited access to maternal and child

resources. Language barriers and disenfranchisement leave them

unempowered to navigate the intricacies of the U.S. healthcare

system. As the outcome gap widens between the Latino population

and others, cost implications to the system rise higher and higher.

For South Carolina, where the Latino population grew faster

between 2000 and 2010 than in any other state, this creates an

alarming need.

YOU CAN AFFECT THE OUTCOME

Your monetary support can make a difference for us all. In a climate

of seemingly uncontrollable healthcare costs, preventative health

measures directly affect the economic burden we all share. Simply

put: your donation can ensure South Carolina’s improved health

drives a more robust community.

congaree land trust

The mission of the Congaree Land Trust is to promote voluntary conservation of scenic lands, open spaces, farms, forests, natural areas and significant habitats in central South Carolina. To date, we have successfully closed more than 90 conservation easements protecting over 30,000 acres of significant land and habitats in our 11-county service area.

Few things last forever. Our land is one of them. A gift to the Congaree Land Trust provides a guarantee for perpetuity. Your donation helps sustain the timeless back roads, recreational domains and wildlife areas that distinguish our region with its unmistakable flavor.

Conservation easements preserve our state’s finest asset, protecting scenic lands for the benefit of the South Carolinians who will come after us. South Carolina’s land is its heritage, one our children deserve to enjoy.

Your gift leaves a lasting legacy that will impact generations to follow. The traditional uses of the land — farming, forestry, hunting, fishing and more — will endure. Younger generations will continue to enjoy the land for recreation and learn to embrace the important value of stewardship.

Become a member of the Congaree Land Trust. Defend the distinctive landscape you identify with our region. Take a stand for the way of life you value deeply.

OUR VISION

Since its inception in 1992, the Congaree Land Trust has facilitated the protection of more than 30,000 acres of significant natural areas from the threat of unwelcome development. In our third decade of existence, we aspire to place an additional 30,000 acres under conservation easement.

Each acre we preserve depends upon a donation of $100. We need $3 million to make our 30,000-acre goal a reality.

sc school for the deaf and the blindAfter more than 30 years of raising awareness and

money for the South Carolina School for the Deaf

and the Blind, The Walker Foundation is forging new

ground in bringing opportunities to children with

sensory challenges. It’s a spirit of possibility that

dates back to 1849, when Rev. Newton Pinckney

Walker and Martha L. Hughston Walker channeled

the principles of self-reliance and individuality as

the keys to progress into a school that would help

young South Carolinians identify their talents and

broaden their potential for generations to come.

It’s a story worth hearing.

MARKETING STRATEGY, COLLATERAL DESIGN AND COPYWRITING

RAISING AWARENESS, LIFTING LIVES

The Walker Foundation today carries the Walkers’ torch of discovery full circle by working tirelessly to secure fi nancial support for the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind. The school offers three fully accredited programs at its Spartanburg campus:

» THE SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF: for students with a hearingloss of educational signifi cance.

» THE SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND: for students with a visionloss of educational signifi cance.

» THE CEDAR SPRINGS ACADEMY: for students with some level of hearing or vision loss and at least one additional disability. This includes students who are classifi ed as deaf-blind.

Your contributions enable students to enjoy a rich quality of life, with everything mainstream schools offer and more. The school’s exemplary food service program can accommodate special dietary needs and offers restaurant-style dining. The campus has a variety of recreational facilities and extracurricular amenities, such as a swimming pool, bowling alley, track and fi eld complex, and library. Sports teams run the gamut from football and basketball to volleyball, track and cheerleading.

With a record of service to South Carolina children spanning more than 160 years, the school is a national leader in developing programs that set new standards in educational, social and occupational opportunities for students with sensory challenges. This quest for excellence has attracted major gifts from national funders that recognize the power of innovation in helping students achieve their potential.

HOW YOUR GIFT STIMULATES THEIR SENSES

A donation from the Walmart

Foundation will help the

school start a retail training

program that will focus on

developing communication skills,

merchandising, selling goods and

services, and customer service skills. ABOUT THE WALKER FOUNDATION

The Walker Foundation is a nonprofi t organization dedicated to supporting the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind to maximize every sensory-disabled student’s opportunities for lifelong success. All donations are tax-deductible.

Since its establishment in 1979, the Foundation has raised more than $10 million for program costs, supplies and equipment, capital improvements, and personal student needs. The school serves more than 275 students at its residential campus in Spartanburg and an additional 1,400 children with sensory disabilities across the state through partnerships with school districts and programs such as First Steps and Baby Net.

TouchSpend some time on campus, and you’ll feel the energy and spirit that resides throughout classrooms, playgrounds, athletic fi elds and residence halls. The pride and satisfaction that exists among students and their teachers is as tangible as the dots on a page of Braille. Your contributions support this.

SeeYour gift helps many students see for the fi rst time the tremendous value they offer society and the contributions they will someday be able to make. They can see a bright future outside the confi nes of home and campus and consider the independent possibilities ahead.

SmellThe delectable scents of home-style meals give residential students a sense of comfort and security. The support you provide keeps the school’s residence halls and other amenities as welcoming as possible and in top form to reduce distractions, put students at ease, and increase their ability to learn.

HearWith your help, we can create a buzz across the state, raising awareness about educational resources available through the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. With effective outreach, more families can open a whole new world of possibility to their children, putting them on a path to productive lives and careers.

TastePlain and simple, your donation to The Walker Foundation gives more students access to a specialized education that can help them taste and experience new opportunities in the world around them.

NOVCRIMES, VICTIMS AND JUSTICE

Sit in general sessions court, meet with a circuit court judge, see the inside of a jail and meet with residents “behind the fence” at DJJ. A hands-on learning experience will involve helping victims of crime.

DECMEDIA AND JOURNALISM

Interact with television, radio, print and online journalists. Expand upon your own personal communications skills by writing a story for the newspaper and exploring the role of technology in today’s world of communication.

Business teams must complete a detailed profit and loss statement, and determine how to distribute the profits to a charitable organization of the students’ choice.

MARINVESTMENT AND FINANCE

Learn the basics of finance, investment and money management by establishing and managing a budget, and exploring strategies for investing profits from the students’ own business venture.

APRCAREER AND HIGHER EDUCATION

MAYGRADUATION

CHOOSING THE YOUTH CORPS

Youth Corps accepts nominations each January through March from teachers, guidance counselors, business and community leaders, and Youth Corps alumni. Top candidates are invited for an interview, after which the Selection Team chooses 36 students who show promise of leadership abilities and who represent a diverse cross section of our community.

The cost for this incredible experience is $975 with partial scholar-ships available for some participating students.

HOW TO USE THIS PACKET

Enclosed in this packet are nomination forms. Be inspired by the character traits described on the forms, but don’t be limited by them. Think of students you know who would bring excitement, enthusiasm and engagement to Youth Corps. Pass the forms on to teachers and other community leaders who may wish to nominate their own candidates. Simply send us the form with your nominee’s name and contact information. We’ll send all candidates an appli-cation package for review and consideration.

“ Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” HAROLD R. MCALINDON

PROGRAM MODULES

Each month, Youth Corps participants will delve into a different topic area facing the larger community. Through a combination of site visits, volunteer experiences and hands-on learning, we will sow the vision of what their lives can be and get them engaged in making a real impact.
