Richale Park
Riccall was the site of the base camp of Harald Hardråda in 1066 before his victory in the Battle of Fulford and prior to his subsequent defeat shortly afterwards by the forces of King Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Riccall was a place of some importance at the time of the Norman Conquest, as may be inferred from its being in possession of a church at that early period. It is spelt Richale in the Domesday Book and it is thought that the name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon Ricc Hall, signifying the mansion of the domain.
An active Parish Council works hard to promote the village and improve the quality of life for all residents, working with community groups on all aspects of village life.
Riccall itself offers a primary school, pre-school, post offi ce, hairdresser and beauty salon, butcher, local pub and restaurant. One of the jewels in the village’s crown is the Regen Centre, a specially-designed, award-winning conference, events and community facility – staging everything from business functions to parties and weddings.
The well-regarded centre houses a bar, four outdoor tennis courts and a sports hall for football and badminton. Further sporting activities are on offer from the Riccall Tennis Club, affi liated to the Lawn Tennis Association, which was established in the village over 80 years ago.
Riccall is located on the A19 between Selby and York. The nearest railway station is around three miles away at Selby.
The North Yorkshire village of Riccall is steeped in character and history – dating from its early
days as an Anglo-Saxon settlement.
