that it is much easier to tame a wildRhinox with iron than with wood.

Ghark’s obsession with metal isundoubtedly the foundation of his long-standing alliance with his neighbours, the Chaos Dwarfs of Zharr Naggarond.Ghark has provided the Chaos Dwarfswith many hundreds of Gnoblar slavesover the years, and much of the goldthat passes through his realm. Thisalliance proved invaluable when, afterslaughtering his way through themajority of an army of BretonnianKnights Errant, Ghark’s Rhinox,Bladehorn, was spitted upon the lancesof a unit of Grail Knights. Ghark neverforgave them, even after he had them fordinner later that day, and fragments oftheir armour still adorn Ghark’s ownplate mail.

But it was the Chaos Dwarfs who arereally responsible for Ghark’s currentinfamy. They replaced their ally’s Rhinoxwith a mechanical monstrosity of hissingpistons and rune-etched chains, adaemon-fuelled engine of destructionthat obeys Ghark’s every command(though he still bashes it over the headnow and again, for old time’s sake).None can doubt that Ghark Ironskin isamongst the mightiest of Tyrants, ridinghis unstoppable steed at the head of aniron-clad army of Bulls and Rhinoxriders, the ground shaking at their tread.

Ghark Ironskin andthe Ironskin tribeGhark Ironskin, the Tyrant of theIronskin tribe, is very unusual. He wassmashed over the head by his father foreating too slowly whilst still a whelp, and one of the nails of his father’s iron-bound club broke off in Ghark’s headwhere it rusts to this day. The longestserving of his Irongut bodyguard claimthat this may be the reason for Ghark’sobsession for metal, a passion that hasspread throughout his tribe.

It is a mark of status for an IronskinOgre to cover himself with iron ratherthan mere trinkets such as gold. Afterall, gold is soft and beautiful, a woman’smetal, whereas iron is tough, strong andugly, like a Bull. The Ironskin tribebelieves that where an Ogre can gainmuch in trade from gold, a stout ironclub can cut out all that confusinghaggling and get straight to the goodstuff.

Ghark is famous in the Ogre kingdomsfor another good reason – his tribeboasts a great number of Rhinox riders. The very first Ogre to batter a bullRhinox into submission, Ghark tamedhis one-time steed, Bladehorn, with aniron stanchion. To this day, IronskinBulls take pride in repeating thecoming-of-age feat of their Tyrant, though it is a closely guarded secret ofthe Ironskin clan

hair can bleed to death. But the Rhinox,as with all species native to theMountains of Mourn, is extremelyresilient. Even when its brain has ceasedto function it will continue to fight, slashing and biting in its death throes. Itis at this point the hunting Ogre willlaunch his ambush.

The victor of a Rhinox leadershipchallenge will be exhausted and havelost a lot of blood as a result of itsordeal. This is about the only state inwhich a lone Ogre could expect to finda Rhinox and capture it alive. The Ogreaspirant sprints towards the woundedRhinox and vaults on to his back. Thosethat ride out the bucking, bellowingfrenzy that invariably follows will breakthe beast’s will as it slows and eventuallyconcedes that to continue would be tobleed to death. Those Ogres that fall offduring this violent rodeo are gored andsubsequently eaten by their quarry.

For the successful asprirants, therefollows a period in which the would-beRhinox rider must remain ‘in the saddle’at all times, steering the beast with hisclub. The Rhinox, its walnut-sized brainaddled by the repeated blows, slowlybecomes accustomed to bearing a rider. In this way the Ogre wins theacceptance of the beast. Once a Rhinoxhas been broken in this manner, it isalmost possible to domesticate it.

Ogre Rhinox riders return to their tribewith their prize, but not for long. Thereis a fortune to be made as a mercenaryfor a young Ogre with his own Rhinox, and every spring a few new Bulls fromthe upper slopes will join together andsell their services as the heaviest shockcavalry known to the Warhammer world.

Rhinox riders typically carry all theirworldly possessions upon their mount,as there is more than enough room, anda broken Rhinox makes an excellentbeast of burden. They like to advertisetheir success as Dogs of War, and oftenwear precious metals to show theirwealth. Although Rhinox riders canusually secure the victory of anybattle they are engaged in, thesebrutes and their gigantic steeds donot come cheap, and thepaymasters of the victorious sidehave often noted a profoundfeeling of loss when the spoils ofwar are shared out.

It is well-known that almost allthe Rhinox riders abroad in theworld hail from the Ironskinkingdom, populated by a tribeof Ogres who revere their mightyTyrant almost as much as theyrevere iron itself.

The Iron Rhinox is a monstrous mount. It has a 3+ Armour Save. Itsattacks count as magical. Ghark may never join units. Ghark and theIron Rhinox have a Unit Strength of 8.

Weapons: Ghark is armed with a hand weapon and an ironfist.

Armour: Ghark wears the Ironskin Armour.

Special Rules: Terror, Large Target, Steam attack, Bad Tempered,Thunderous Charge (see opposite), Ironskin Tribe.

Steam Attack. The Iron Rhinox constantly snorts evil-smelling,sulphurous steam from its armoured snout. The Iron Rhinox has a S3breath weapon that imposes a -2 Armour Save.

The Ironskin Tribe. The Ironskin tribe is unusual in several ways, anduses the army list organisation below:

MAGIC ITEMSIronskin Armour. The Ironskin Armour is a collection of thick plates ofiron scavenged from the hundreds of foes that Ghark has killed overthe years, and bears a potent protective rune bought at the cost ofa small mountain of gold. The Ironskin Armour gives Ghark a 3+Armour Save.

USING GHARK IRONSKIN IN YOUR GAMES OF WARHAMMER

Dave Taylor’s Ghark Ironskin conversion is based on aJuggernaut of Khorne, with extensive use of plasticard,Green Stuff and fine chain. Truly a monster amongst Tyrants!

RHINOX RIDER – GRAHAM DAVEYGraham Davey: My model uses theRhinox from the GnoblarScraplauncher kit. The rider wascreated from a normal plastic OgreBull. I cut off both the legs withclippers and then glued theremaining torso in position on theRhinox. The legs were positioned onthe sides of the beast using adhesiveputty, with more blobs to roughlyshape the thighs.

Once I was happy with how the legslooked, the putty was removed and Isuperglued the pieces in place. Ithen modelled in the thighs withGreen Stuff – sculpting on Ogremodels is never fiddly because theyare nice and big. All that remainedwas to add the head and arms (aspare Leadbelcher arm gave theright pose), a jewellery chain for thereins and various bits of equipment.

Scibor Teleszynski saw sketches ofthe Gnoblar Scraplauncher andknew that he had to sculpt a Rhinoxwith a rider. He made a fewsketches and started to sculpt themonster shown below. It took him

only five days, despite the fact hewas sculpting another eight figuresat the same time. Scibor onlystarted sculpting in 28mm a yearago, and says he still has lots ofproblems with Green Stuff!

Unit Size: 1-3Weapons and Armour: light armour, Ogre clubsSpecial Rules: Cause Fear, Bad Tempered, ThunderousCharge, Single-minded, Bull Rhinoxen, Dogs of WarRhinox Riders are cavalry and wear light armour. Combinedwith the thick hide of the Rhinox, this gives them a 4+Armour Save. Each Rhinox Rider has Unit Strength 4. BullRhinox Riders have a Unit Strength of 6. Rhinox Riders arebased on a 50x50mm base, Bull Rhinoxen on a chariot base.

Options•Any unit may be given ironfists (+10 pts/model).

•Ogre Rhinox Riders may benefit from the Armour Savegranted by an ironfist in close combat as normal, but maynot use it to gain +1 Attack.

•Any unit may upgrade their light armour to heavy armour(+6 pts/model).

•Any unit may upgrade one Rhinox Rider to a Thunderlordat +24 pts.

•Any unit may upgrade one Rhinox Rider to a Musician at+12 pts.

•Any unit may upgrade one Rhinox Rider to a StandardBearer at +24 pts.

•Any unit may have a magic banner of up to 50pts in value.

•Any Rhinox in the unit may be upgraded to a Bull Rhinoxat +45 pts, however a Thunderlord’s Rhinox must beupgraded first.

Special RulesCause fear. Rhinoxen are large and dangerous cave-beastswith horns as long as a full-grown man. They cause fear.

Bad Tempered. Even Rhinoxes that have been broken bytheir riders have a temper shorter than a pygmy’s thumb. Ifthere is an enemy model that is an eligible target for theRhinox Riders to charge during the Declare Charges part ofthe Movement phase, it must immediately pass a Leadershiptest or declare a charge – if there is a choice of models tocharge, then the controlling player may choose freelybetween them.

Thunderous Charge. Even a single Rhinox Rider in fullcharge is a terrifying sight, the ground itself trembling as thecave-beast thunders into the ranks of their foe. On any turnwhen all models in a Rhinox Rider unit charge more than 7",each model causes D3 impact hits at the basic strength of theRhinox or Bull Rhinox.

Single-Minded. Once a Rhinox has started to move it isdifficult to get it to stop. This rarely interferes with theRhinox Riders’ strategy, which usually consists of ‘head downand charge’. A unit of Rhinox Riders may not changeformation at all unless they spend their entire Movementphase reforming. They may not wheel more than once in anygiven turn (they still get a ‘free wheel’ to align in combat totheir enemy).

Bull Rhinoxen. A full-grown Bull Rhinox is roughly the sizeof a steam tank and almost as difficult to stop. Bull Rhinoxencause terror instead of fear, and are Large Targets. Enemiesfiring at units of Rhinoxen comprising of Rhinox and BullRhinox must nominate which they are firing at beforeresolving their shots.

Dogs of War. Though rarer even than the most far-travelledManeaters, Rhinox Riders are mercenaries and sell-swords toa man. Units of Rhinox Riders may be included in non-Ironskin Ogre Kingdoms armies, taking up a Rare and aSpecial choice. A single unit may be included in non-OgreKingdoms armies too (this includes Dogs of War armies), butwill take up two Rare choices instead.
