World History 2 Research Paper & Product
The World We Want 2030:
Addressing the Sustainable Development Goals
Why:
In the year 2030 you will be 30 years old, that is the time in your career when you have a chance to become
professionally influential. What kind of world will you inherit in the year 2030? This past September, the
United Nations released 17 Sustainable Development Goals that they want to reach by the year 2030. In order
to reach those goals, we need to start looking for solutions now. What do you think we will be able to
accomplish by the year 2030?
How? You will…
• Research one Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), identify and define a specific” Target Goal”,
describe the problem (what the goal is addressing) using data. Identify and describe an organization that
is currently addressing this goal (List of Topics, https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/topics )
• Identify an event/era in World History since 1500 which could help to explain the challenges that the
Sustainable Development Goals hope to address.
• You will design and create technology that will help to reach your SDG. Mr Ajima Dominion’s
Technology Resource Teacher) will be co-teaching and providing support for this project.
• Present your solution to professionals in the field and receive feedback on your prototype.
What:
A. Paper to Identify the Problem: This is your major research paper for the course. There will be
checkpoints throughout the project that will need to be accomplished before you can move on to the next
step. You MUST complete all of the steps in order and on time.
Requirements for the Paper
• Page Length: Fully addresses all Map Points.
• Format: 12 pt. Times New Roman font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins
• Citation Format: APA documentation is required
• Reference materials: 5-7 “high quality” sources to corroborate your argument and TWO must be Library
References (Book, Reference Book, Online Database).
**Academic Integrity: Any attempt to use the work of someone else without proper credit is plagiarism. Rough
Drafts will be submitted to turnitin.com to verify originality of the work. Your work will not be accepted if
there is evidence of plagiarism.
Requirements for Content
6
WH2 OTTW: Relator 2016
• Map Point 1: Identify a target goal as identified in the SDGs
o Define the target goal
o Highlight and explain key data indicators
• Map Point 2: How can I use history to understand purpose for the challenges of the SDG?
o Identify an event or era in World History since 1500s that created conditions that the Sustainable
Development Goal wishes to address. Focus on history & geography.
o Link that event or era in World History with the SDG.
• Map Point 3: Identify a specific project that is currently trying to address the SDG. Describe the
specific geographic area where they are working, the status of the SDG in that area. Identify the type of
data the organization is collecting. Analyze the organization’s success.
B. Product to address the Solution
• Design Process: As an individual, with a partner or in triads, you will create a prototype of a product to
address one of the Sustainable Development Goal Targets. Your product may take many forms; it may
be constructed out of wood, metal or plastic; it may be motorized; it may be designed with a 3D printer,
or with autocad, or it might be an app.
• The design process will allow for several “iterations”. Meaning, you will create product, test it and have
it reviewed by others, then you will get to make changes to your product.
C. Presentation
• Prepare a “kickstarter” or “shark tank” like presentation for professionals in the field the goal to get the
professionals to “sponsor” your product. You will present in person with your product and you will
send a digital presentation to professionals for their review. Therefore, you need to prepare an in person
and a digital presentation (powerpoint, prezi, video, etc.)

Using Your Sources
USING YOUR SOURCES: When writing a research paper you need to include research that other people of
done to prove your point. It is IMPERATIVE that you give credit to the source because it is not your ideas. SO, SO
IMPORTANT! I will not accept any work that is not properly cited, so do it right the first time. In order to prepare to
write your paper in a legally accurate way, we will practice different ways of using a source.
Directions:
1. Identify a Map point you are ready to write about.
2. Choose at least 2 sources that you can use to provide information for that Map point.
3. Write out one quote from each source that you want to use in your paper.
4. Write at least 2 paragraphs for your map point that include the two quotations.
5. At the end of your two paragraphs, write out the name of your sources in proper format (see below).
6. **** Bring your sources and your two paragraphs to class. Writing Center students will review your
work with you and give you suggestions on paraphrasing and using quotations.
7. CITING INFORMATION
• Any ideas that are not your own
• DATA/ NUMBERS!
• Use this website to check that you have proper format for APA, http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/
APA FORMAT BASICS:

The World We Want 2030:
Addressing the Sustainable Development Goals
Rubric: Product & Presentation
Authentic Problem & Audience Prototype & Design
SuperStar 10 The driving question addresses an important problem related to the SDGs that should be solved by 2020. The product helps a great deal in solving the SDG and improving the lives of people. Clearly is designed for a specific audience and environment.
The prototype is functioning. Seeks out and uses feedback from experts. Several iterations and/ or design models have been created in the process of prototyping based on problem solving, critical thinking and research from traditional and non-traditional sources.
Good 9-8 related to the SDG that should be solved. The product improves the lives of people. Demonstrates an awareness of the needs of the audience and the environment.
The prototype is mostly functioning. Asks for feedback from experts, may not fully follow through on the feedback. At least two brainstormed plans were developed based on problem solving, critical thinking and research from traditional sources.
Needs Improvement 7-6
The driving question is a minor problem related to the SDGs, not urgent. The product could help people. The needs of the audience and the environment are not clearly meet by the product.
The prototype has no real functionality. Limited evidence that advice was sought in product design. One blueprint for the product was developed with limited research from mostly traditional sources.
No Evidence0
Presentation: Connect with an audience beyond the classroom
Presentation Look Presentation Content
SuperStar 10 The pictures and videos shown help to enhance the judge’s understanding of the project. The presentation has a good balance of text/ visuals/ and white space.
The presentation allows a person unfamiliar with your project to understand the problem and solution. The audience can easily follow along. The presentation explains with detailed supporting evidence when describing design and functionality. Presents information and research in a clear and logical manner.
Good 9-8 The pictures and videos shown are on topic and they inform the judge about your work. The presentation may have a few parts that are heavy white space, or heavy text.
The presentation allows a person who is somewhat familiar with global development to understand the problem and your solution. The audience can mostly follow along. The presentation explains with basic evidence when describing design and functionality. Presents information and research in a mostly clear and logical manner.
Needs Improvement 7-6
The pictures and videos only partly help to inform the judge about your work. Some parts of the visuals or video maybe confusing, or may not fully explain your work. There is a heavy imbalance of white space, text and visuals.
The presentation is confusing to the average person, but a global development professional could understand the main idea. The audience has a hard time following along. The presentation explains using inadequate or inappropriate evidence when describing design and functionality. Information and research is presented in a confusing way.
