Underground reinforced concrete bifurcation pipe is an important part of conveyance structure During construction the workloadof excavation and concrete pouring can be significantly decreased according to optimized pipe structure and the engineering qualitycan be improved This paper presents an optimization mathematical model of underground reinforced concrete bifurcation pipestructure according to real working status of several common pipe structures from real cases Then an optimization design systemwas developed based on Particle SwarmOptimization algorithm Furthermore take the bifurcation pipe of one hydropower stationas an example optimization analysis was conducted and accuracy and stability of the optimization design system were verifiedsuccessfully
1 Introduction
With the development of large hydropower stations especiallypumped storage power stations more and more bifurcationpipes are constructed In conveyance system of hydropowerstations bifurcation pipe usually locates on the end ofpressure pipe and is near the powerhouse so it undertakeshigh internal and external water pressure Bifurcation pipeis a complex space structure and complicated stresses arecaused when it suffers from different water conditions Thereare many constraints when it is designed and requirementsof hydraulic power and structure are needed to be satisfiedhowever there is certain contradiction between these twoaspects they cannot be met mutually In 1990 Zagars et al[1] analyzed reinforced concrete bifurcation pipe of Guxustorage power station using structuralmechanicalmethod In1996 linear and nonlinear finite element methods were usedfor evaluating stress status of surrounding rock lining andreinforcing steel bars of bifurcation pipe under internal andexternal effect by Lu and Liu [2] In 2001 Xiao [3] developedthe optimization analysis method used for assessing the best
structure of large-scale underground reinforced concreteconduit based on failure conditions of reinforced concreteand elastoplastic principle of rock energy dissipation In2006 Haixia and Zhefei [4] established an optimizationdesign model of crescent rib branches for steel pipe anddeveloped a corresponding program In 2009 Ren et al[5] analyzed stress and deformation of surrounding rockand reinforcement of lining material stress and crack inreinforced concrete bifurcation structure of Pushihe pumpedstorage power station
In bifurcation pipe design design safety and reasonablestructure based on real structure layout are themain purposesof most designers Bifurcation pipe optimization can reducenot only structure volume but also cavern excavation volume[6] However most of the current optimization designs aretraditional they only make simple comparisons of someschemes without mathematical programming method andmaterial properties cannot be fully used A reasonable andefficient method is needed and will be significant for opti-mization design of bifurcation pipe

2 Parameterized FEM Model andMesh Program
Shape-control parameters should be defined according to dif-ferent bifurcation pipe structures before establishing modeland then the coordinates of shape-control points can becalculated by shape-control parameters Three-dimensionalmodel containing reinforced concrete blocks of bifurcationpipe is built and an automaticmesh program is developed [7ndash9]

Figure 1) and so forth (see Figure 1) Shape-control pointsand geometric sizes can be calculated according to geometryrelations Shape-control point calculation of bifurcation pipeis done Calculation of some intermediate variables andauxiliary geometric sizes is necessary [10]
Control point coordinates calculation program was writ-ten by Visual Basic Bifurcation pipe control points and sur-rounding rock coordinates were input through visualizationparameter input interface and data files such as CGFKTXTKZDTXT were exported According to the defined meshscheme the whole three-dimensional finite element meshwas obtained using automatic mesh program CGWGEXEwritten by FORTRAN language converting the mesh datainto INP format files of ABAQUS and then the whole meshcan be visualized in ABAQUS [11ndash13]
3 Optimization Design Program
The process of optimization design includes randomizationof initial parameters calculation of structure judgment ofconstraints searching better optimization design schemeand obtaining the best optimization design results Imple-mentation usually goes through the following steps (1) estab-lish a reasonable mathematical model and transform realengineering problems into mathematical problems (2) solvemathematical problems by certain reasonable and effective

Basic design parameters of bifurcation pipe usually aremain inlet pipe diameter 119877

The process of optimization design includes randomizationof initial parameters calculation of structure judgment ofconstraints searching better optimization design schemeand obtaining the best optimization design results Imple-mentation usually goes through the following steps (1) estab-lish a reasonable mathematical model and transform realengineering problems into mathematical problems (2) solvemathematical problems by certain reasonable and effective
optimizationmethod (3) develop a program using structuralanalysis method and implement optimization design calcula-tion
31 Mathematical Model Optimization design in this paperwas based on a defined topology structure so design variablesshould be chosen according to the topology Bifurcation pipeshape-control parameters were chosen as design variablesThe least concrete volume was set as objective function inorder to make full use of reinforced concrete bifurcation pipematerial properties

of tensile status occurs in the bottom of the cavern excavationarea at bifurcation area The maximum tensile stress beforeand after optimization is 048MPa and 059MPa Com-pressive stress concentration occurs in the bifurcation areaand the maximum compressive stress reaches minus4371MPaminus5756MPa Large displacement is caused in top and bottomof cavern toward to the cave Extreme displacement occursat the top of the bifurcation of the cavern and displace-ment before and after optimization is 231mm and 212mmAfter parameters optimization walls are significantly thinnercavern excavation volume decreases and cavern excavationradius is smaller The top and bottom cavern displacementafter excavation has been reduced Cavern excavation radiushas a certain relationshipwith the surrounding rock displace-ment
432 Bifurcation Pipe The distribution of bifurcation pipestress and strain is almost unchanged before and after opti-mization Two layers of Φ20mm hoop reinforcement werebuilt using T3D2 element in modeling and were inserted intoinner side of bifurcation pipe Analysis of bifurcation pipewith hoop reinforcement is as follows There is little changein the whole stress distributionWhole bifurcation stress afterinserting hoop reinforcement is significantly reduced Thevast majority of the tensile stress values is 20MPa or less butthere is still stress concentration phenomenon at the bifurca-tion area andmaximumstress here can be eliminated throughsuitable reinforcement direction arrangement Extreme dis-placement is 0535mm at intersecting line in top and bottomof inner surface All rebars are subject to tensile stress andmaximum stress reaches 752MPa (see Figures 6 and 7)
For the inevitable stress concentration in bifurcationand waist areas some general engineering measures canbe taken such as sharp corners rounded haunch crotchoutsourcing concrete in bifurcation point configuring hoop
