As the most trusted Brand in healthcare, we have the unique opportunity to make our case for principled health policies that benefit not just BCBS Plans’ members, but all Americans. Seizing that opportunity requires a strong BluePAC to ensure that our voice is heard by all potential political allies, Democrats and Republicans alike.
BluePAC was critical to our success in last year’s many health reform debates, and a strong and bipartisan approach will be even more important in what is sure to be a challenging policy environment in the months and years ahead. That is why your ongoing support for BluePAC is so important, and why I am so thankful that you are an integral member of our BluePAC team. I hope you will take the opportunity to read this brief update on what BluePAC is doing and how you can get more involved.
Yours in good health,

As of January, there will be three open Senate seats next year due to retirements – Arizona (Jeff Flake – R), Tennessee (Bob Corker – R), and Utah (Orrin Hatch – R). In addition, Minnesota Democrat Al Franken’s resignation now means that there will be a special election in November for the remainder of his term; appointed Senator Tina Smith (D) is running in that election.
The House of Representatives is also experiencing their own array of retirement announcements with the current total at twenty four. Eight have publicly announced a run for the Senate, ten will run for their states’ governorships, and one has already announced his intent to run for the presidency. Fourteen of these total forty two Members are Democrats while twenty nine are Republicans. Additionally, there will be at least four House special elections this year, in Arizona, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Two gubernatorial elections were held in November, in New Jersey and Virginia. Democrats comfortably won both states, despite late predictions of a competitive race in Virginia.
Democrats scored an upset win in the Alabama special Senate election in December. Doug Jones’ victory narrows the Republican margin in the Senate to 51-49 and although the map continues to favor Republicans in the mid-terms it is becoming more competitive.

“What makes this event so unique is the chance to see how much each participant enjoys spending time with col-leagues for a day on the course while raising money for BluePAC,” said Berry Trimble, Executive Director, Congressio-nal Relations.
Kudos, as always, to tournament organizer David Betke and special thanks to Sara Schnack and the entire Meeting Services team who do an outstanding job of staging this popular and fun-filled outing benefitting BluePAC.

The BCBS system enjoyed another outstanding year in 2017 setting records in three significant categories. A grand total of $524,000 was raised in 2017 marking the second consecutive year BluePAC has crossed over the $500,000 mark while BCBSA employees contributed just over $122,000 – both improving on record levels from 2016. We also enjoyed an all-time high of 30 Plans and BCBSA meeting their individual BluePAC goals for the year!
Thanks to all of our Plans and Association employees for once again leading the BluePAC charge! A special thank you to those who could join us for our BluePAC end of year thank you events and congratulations to our BluePAC raffle winners, Jane Galvin and Jelani McLean. The BluePAC team is looking forward to another great year in 2018!
