Section 1 Introduction
This document describes the changes in software version Freelance 2016 as
compared to software version Freelance 2013 SP1.
This document is intended to provide information on the Freelance hardware and
software that is not (yet) described in user manuals, sales information, or any other
kind of product information. Additionally, it describes problems and errors in the
software or documentation that were found too late to be included in the
corresponding manual.
Version Designation
Released Software
The basic Freelance System in English and German is the subject of this release.
Refer to the document Packet Assembly List Freelance 2016.pdf for the full name
of the released software version. In the following text, this version will be called
Freelance 2016.
Compatible Software
With version Freelance 2016 compatible software packages like ABB’s remote I/O
DTMs and Control Aspect are provided with the Freelance product CD. When
connecting field devices, the lists of devices found compatible with Freelance must
be observed. This lists can be found in the ABB Solutionsbank:
• 3BDD011925 “Freelance Integrated PROFIBUS Devices”,
• 3BDD011926 “Freelance Integrated HART Devices” and• 2PAA103000 “Freelance Device Management Integrated FF Devices”.
For further details of the software provided with the Freelance installation CD and

New Product NamingStarting with this Freelance version some Freelance software components are
renamed:
New Process Station AC 900F Lite
Starting with this Freelance version the new process station AC 900F Lite with
optimized price-performance ratio is supported. Like the previously supported
process stations, the AC 900F Lite will be configured with Freelance Engineering
and can be used together with the other Freelance controllers.

Mounting & Installation Instructions AC 900F and
Engineering Manual Process Stations.
The AC 900F Lite process station is designed for smaller lines:
• the number of possible I/O signals is limited to 400,
• there are only three instead of four Ethernet interfaces available,
• the available memory capacity and the CPU performance are lower than with
the standard version.
New in AC 900F
New CAN Communication Interface Module CI 910F
With this Freelance version the new CAN module CI 910F is released.
With this new module the AC 900F / AC 900F Lite now allows connectivity to
Freelance Rack I/Os based on CAN bus.
Control Net Redundancy
Optionally, to increase the availability, the communication between AC 900F /
AC 900F Lite controllers and operator or gateway stations and lateral
communication between AC 900F / AC 900F Lite controllers is possible using aControl Net in a redundant configuration.
Communication between the operator stations and gateway stations (horizontal
communication) is only possible via the configured Ethernet line. Redundancy is
not supported in this case. Communication between AC 900F controllers (lateral
communication) and with operator or gateway stations (vertical communication) is
done via the active Control Net line. In the event of a failure of the active line, a
redundancy toggle to the redundant line occurs within a configurable changeover
time.
Extended Temperature Range
The AC 900F and AC 900F Lite controllers are released for operation in an ambient
temperature between -20 °C to +70°C.

Diagnostic interface (Radio clock)
The diagnostic interface of the AC 700F and AC 900F controller supports now
transmission rates of 9.6 kBit/s and 19.2 kBit/s, default value is 19.2 kBit/s.

Engineering Efficiency
• Improved graphical representation in the hardware structure
• Better support and easier configuration of Panel 800
• Graphics Editor improvements to support different screen resolutions and ratio.
• Improved GSD file handling
Database Compression
To ensure a secure project work for very large Freelance projects, the Freelance
project database can be compressed.
Freelance Operations
With this Freelance version Freelance Operations is now optimized for widescreen
displays (16:10 and 16:9).
The Freelance Operations software supports both the conventional screen formats
4:3 / 5:4 and the widescreen formats 16:9 / 16:10. For the 5:4 screen format amonitor screen resolution of 1280 * 1024 pixels is recommended, for the 16:9
widescreen format a resolution of 1920 * 1080 pixels should be used.
Freelance Operations Lite
The new lite version of Freelance Operations also provides for enhanced scalability
of the system. In contrast to the standard version of Freelance Operations, the lite

version is very attractively priced. It offers an unlimited number of standard
displays and only limits the number of graphic displays to five. It is mainly suitable
for smaller plants or the usage of Panel PCs in cabinet doors.
Virtualization of Freelance PCs in ESX-Server
As from this release it is possible to run all Freelance software components
(Engineering, Operations, OPC, …) on an ESX server.

Firmware Update from Version 9.1
Upgrade of a process station AC 700F from V9.1 cannot be done within one
step
If an upgrade of process station AC 700F from version 9.1 to Freelance 2016 is
needed, the new firmware cannot be loaded directly in one step int the AC 700F
process station. (#23776 - RN_20131_003)
Workaround: First load the firmware version 9.2 in the process station AC 700F.
Then, the firmware version Freelance 2016 can be loaded.
For any necessary assistance, please contact your local service organization.
Freelance Formulation
Freelance Formulation V1.0 does not work with Freelance 2016
If Freelance Formulation shall be used together with Freelance 2016, Freelance
Formulation V1.1 needs to be installed as Freelance Formulation V1.0 works with
Freelance 2013 / 2013 SP1 only (#24411 - RN_2016_008).
Panel Builder 800
Installation of Panel Builder 800 on Freelance engineering station
If Panel Builder 800 shall be installed on a Freelance engineering station, the
following installation sequence should be met (#24282 - RN_2016_005):
1) Install Freelance Engineering

Deinstallation
After uninstalling FDT Shared Components vSphere Client is not able to start
anymore
If FDT Shared Components will be uninstalled from a Freelance PC where vSphere
Client V5.5 is installed as well, the vSphere Client will not be able to start
afterwards, because shared files for both program were removed.
Please reinstall vSphere Client V5.5 after uninstalling FDT Shared Components(#24368 - RN_2016_006).
Downgrade der AC 900F / AC 900F Lite Firmware
If a firmware version lower than Freelance 2016 is to be loaded into an AC 900F or
AC 900F Lite controller with activated Control Net redundancy, you have to disable
Control Net redundancy prior to starting the firmware download.
(#24475 - RN_2016_011).
Freelance Engineering
General
In the Hardware Manager, the "copy/paste" or "drag/drop" function leads to
failure with AC 900F
During usage of the Hardware Manager in Freelance Engineering it was observed
that copying/inserting or dragging/dropping communication interfaces, Ethernet
ports and serial ports at the AC 900F leads to failures. Please use delete/insert
functionality only to move interfaces or ports with AC 900F.
(#24579 - RN_2016_016).
Incorrect behavior with an empty workspace
If no tab is open in the workspace of Freelance Engineering, the following errors
were observed:

• Switching between the operation modes configuration and commissioning is
possible only once, then the corresponding menu items and buttons are
disabled.
• Selecting a check message by double-clicking or with the Current error
button will not open the corresponding object or program.

Workaround: Do not work with an empty workspace, keep always at least one tab
open instead. If buttons are disabled, select an item in the project tree and the buttons will be enabled again.
Use Freelance Engineering in full screen mode
If Freelance Engineering is used in a window instead of full screen mode, you have
to scroll to have all functions available. In some cases the complete functionality is
reachable in full screen mode only. (#22507 - RN_2013_009)
Variable list empty
After the import of a project, in some rare cases the variable list will be shown
empty. The reason for this behavior is a failure during the import of filters for the
variable list. (#23276 - RN_2013_011)
Workaround: Press the toolbar button Clear current filter.
Message “Compiler limit reached”
If an unexpected memory or data base problem occurs while checking the project,
the unspecific message “Compiler limit reached” is displayed. A possible reason
may be that the memory for variables via process image is too low.
(#22090 - RN_2013_013)
Workaround: Reduce the amount of variables to be written via the process image.
Progress windows could disappear
In some rare cases it might happen that progress windows disappear from Freelance
Engineering when an import or export of large projects or a plausibility check of the
same is done. The process is still running in the background and can be detected via

the Windows task manager. During this time, Freelance Engineering cannot be
operated and seems to be blocked for the user. If the import/export or plausibilitycheck is finished, the progress window will come back to the front of the screen.
This behavior depends on the hardware of the PC and was observed mainly on fast
multi-core machines. (#23049 - RN_2013_046)
Usage of 2 Ethernet modules within a non-redundant AC 800F
If two Ethernet modules will be used in slots E1 and E2 of a non-redundant AC800F, take care that an IP address out of various subnets is assigned to each Ethernet
interface.
It is recommended to set e.g. for E1 an IP address within the range of 172.16.[0 -
15].[0 - 255] and for E2 an IP address within the range of 172.16.[16 - 31].[0 - 255]
(#24482 - RN_2016_012).
Gateway Station
Change of configuration does not affect project
Changing the configuration of a gateway station in the project tree, for example,
changing the gateway type, or activate or deactivate external timeserver
functionality, does not lead to a red project node. Thus, the “Check” function will
not create new code and does not request loading the changes. (#22233 -RN_2013_012)
Workaround: After a configuration change of a gateway station, always use the
“Check all” function to create new function code that can be loaded into the
gateway station.

Correction of force and substitute values
If a force or substitute value is corrected via the dialog “Parameter upload”, in some
cases the new value will be corrected correctly in the controller, but shown in
Freelance Engineering as written. (#23221 - RN_2013_014)
Workaround: Do not use the parameter upload dialog for correcting force and
substitute values; always use the corresponding dialog of the module.
Display of current values not consistent
In some rare cases, an inconsistent display of current values were observed in
commissioning mode of an FBD or ladder program. Because some connection lines
may be not read correctly, a value is shown with its configuration value instead of
the current value. (#23435 - RN_2013_043)
Workaround: Change to another program and back to enforce a display refresh or
add the variable into the value window to see the correct value.
CPU load reserve
During operation a process station should have enough CPU load reserve for
communication and irregular actions, for example alarm bursts. We recommend to
use the process stations with a CPU load not higher than 80%. (#23721 -
RN_2013_047)
Error message after loading a process stationAfter loading a configuration change to a process station an error message may be
displayed: "Load operation of object xx failed due to error: 10001807. Therefore,
the station has been stopped! Do you want to start it again?”.
This message does not necessarily mean that the process station has been stopped,
but often refers to a gateway station, which was loaded along with the process
station.

Technical background:
Excerpt from the manual Freelance OPC-Server: “In general, following aconfiguration change to and subsequent loading of a process station, the OPC server
must also be loaded. If no OPC-related data has been modified, then only the project
version number needs to be updated. This modification is post-loaded automatically
from Freelance Engineering.”
Loading on a gateway station is synchronized with pending data requests of the
connected OPC clients. A pending update of an image is given priority, so that thecharging process is rejected and the message described above is shown.
(# 23748 - RN_20131_009)
Workaround1: Start a new load on the gateway station directly from the project
tree.
Workaround2: Contact your local ABB service organization to turn off the
automatic loading of version information to the gateway stations. After this, all
resources in the project can be manually loaded individually.
PM 783F with DA 701F - cyclic error messages
If the STC diagnostic message has been configured using the I/O editor in Freelance
2013 or 2013 SP1 for a DA 701F I/O module directly connected to the PM 783F,
errors will be entered cyclically into the controller's event history.
This also happens if the STC diagnostic message will be configured in Freelance2016 at DA 701F which was previously applied in Freelance 2013 or 2013 SP1
(#24701 - RN_2016_010).
Workaround: Delete all DA 701F modules which are configured at the PM 783F.
Insert new DA 701F modules on the empty slots at the PM 783F and configure the
newly created modules.
Replace or deactivate CAN Module CI 910F
If you want to replace or deactivate the CI 910F module of the primary controller,
execute the following steps:
1. At the primary controller press the "TOGGLE" button and force a redundancy
switchover
2. Check for successfully redundancy switchover.

3. Now you can deactivate the CI 910F at the controller (formerly primary)
4. Replace CI 910F and activate again.

Fieldbus Communication
Station type AC 700F and AC 900F
The following functions are not released to be used with the station types AC 900F
and AC 700F:
• TCP variant of Ethernet Send and Receive function blocks
• Sartorius Scale coupling
• Protronic coupling
These function blocks can be used within the configuration. The plausibility checkreports an error if telecontrol, send and receive or Sartorius scale functions are used
for AC 700F and AC 900F. (#23131 - RN_2013_026)
Temporary data loss during redundancy toggle possible
A redundant process station works as the master for fieldbus communication, for
example Modbus or Telecontrol. If a transmit command is overlaid by a redundancy
toggle, a loss of these particular process values is possible, depending on the timing
of the process station. (#22058 - RN_2013_016)
Communication issues with 38 kBaud on serial interfaces
Depending on the used devices, communication issues may occur by using high
communication speed. This issue was observed by using 38 kBaud. Due to
differences in the used hardware chips, the edges of the signals are different and
may not be interpreted correctly. (#23260 - RN_2013_036)
The Protronic function blocks can be configured and checked for AC 700F and
AC 900F without an error message.
The Protronic function blocks must not be loaded to AC 700F and AC 900F;
loading these function blocks leads to a crash of these controllers. (#15417 -RN_2013_015)

Workaround: Reduce the communication speed.
PROFIBUS
Failure in PROFIBUS communication with CI 930F
Under the following circumstances the CI 930F can run into a PROFIBUS
communication failure:
• Controller redundancy with PROFIBUS master redundancy is used
• PROFIBUS line redundancy is enabled
• Two or more redundant PROFIBUS slaves with a large number of input data (>
144 bytes and Tslot = 300 tbit) are used
• Disconnect one PROFIBUS line (e.g. line A) from the backup PROFIBUS
master
In this case, the PROFIBUS communication gets faulty until the unplugged line isreconnected to the backup PROFIBUS master. (#24513 - RN_2016_014)
Workaround: Configure the station address of the backup PROFIBUS master to
larger then 10.
PROFIBUS slave will be deleted when moving I/O modules between S900 and
S800
In the hardware manager it is possible to move I/O modules between an S900 DTM
slave and an S800 DTM slave or vice versa via drag & drop. This operation is not
restricted by Freelance Engineering. It leads to an error message and the complete
PROFIBUS slave will be deleted in the hardware manager.

Restrictions for PROFIBUS
If a third PROFIBUS master should be connected to a PROFIBUS net with 93.75
kBaud, the PROFIBUS address of this master must be lower than 60.
Using a PROFIBUS communication speed of 93.75 kBaud, you must not use more
than 80 PROFIBUS nodes. (#23378 - RN_2013_017, #22713 - RN_2013_044)

Redundant PROFIBUS line reports failure
After a communication break or a redundancy toggle, a redundant
PROFIBUSPROFIBUS line may report an error, although the communication is
still running. The reason for this is a faulty configuration of the address range in the
module CI 930F. (#23462 - RN_2013_019)
Workaround: Check the configuration of the address ranges in all CI 930F
modules. Make sure that the address range includes all addresses of the PROFIBUS
slave devices, the basic addresses and the redundancy offset addresses. Example: Basic address on device is set to 3, slave redundancy offset is 64;
configure minimum range from 3 to 67.
Short-circuit of redundant PROFIBUS line not detected
If a redundant PROFIBUS line is operated with 12 MBaud, a short-circuit between
lines A and B will not always be detected. (#23555 - RN_2013_020)
Telecontrol IEC 60870-5-101 / 104
Received packages are not handled correctly
If in a Freelance system a telecontrol message is received which contains a not
supported data type, an incorrect address or an unexpected answer NACK (not
acknowledged), this package may be mis-interpreted and sent back to the sender. Ifthe outstation is also unable to handle the sent back telegram, the communication
may be disturbed permanently. (#21033 - RN_2013_022)
Workaround: Correct the configuration of the telecontrol interface.
Increased CPU load in AC 900F by adding telecontrol function blocks
Depending on the internal assignment of the telecontrol data, the CPU load may
increase considerably during telecontrol communication. The probability is much
higher when more than about 500 telecontrol items will be communicated. (#23483
- RN_2013_024)
Workaround: Reduce the amount of telecontrol data in the related controller and
ensure that the CPU load of the controller does not exceed 80%.

Modify the interface function block
In a running project with telecontrol communication, the configuration of the
interface function block (FWK_DEV_TCP, FWK_DEV, FWK_DEV_M,
FWK_DEV_SL) is modified. Freelance Engineering shows that the change can be
loaded into the controller by using “Load / Changed objects”. This will lead to an
error, the process station must be restarted, after this the change can be loaded.
(#23240 - RN_2013_025)
Time synchronization messages
Time synchronization messages are always sent with system time (GMT). Setting
the flag "Use daylight saving time" has no affect to the time synchronization

Connection timeout
The connection timeout is configured with the send function block in FreelanceEngineering. UDP connection is a non-reliable connection; thus the timeout is sent

Workaround: In commissioning mode of Freelance Engineering, select the task
with the Send and Receive function blocks configured.• Press the Stop button to stop the task.
• Repeatedly execute the task by clicking the Execute once button in the task
bar.
• Restart the task; the timeout value will be communicated correctly again.
Loading configuration changes to a Send and Receive function block with
active communication may lead to data inconsistencies in the controller
(#24394 - RN_2016_007).
These issues might occur with changes as follows:
• Change parameters of Ethernet Send and Receive function blocks SR_USEND,
SR_URECV, SR_TCP, SR_SNDEV, SR_RNDEV and load via “Load changed
objects”.
• Delete an instance of the above-mentioned function blocks
Workaround: After configuration changes of Send and Receive function blocks
mentioned above, a Load whole station operation has to be performed.

Control Net Redundancy
Contrary to the documented behavior, the failure of both Control Net lines in the
primary controller does not cause a redundancy toggle if Control Net line A in thesecondary has also failed (24490 - RN_2016_013).
AC 800F Website
When the website of the AC 800F controller is opened from multiple PCs, it may
happen that the website will not be updated temporarily.

Cyclic redundancy switchover
If a redundancy switchover is initiated by user (toggle button or function block), at
least two seconds should be wait before a new redundancy switchover will be
triggered again (#24687 - RN_2016_004).

DTM running in the background of Freelance Operations
Some DTMs use a separate window for the user interface. For each new alarm
message, Freelance Operations is brought to the front again. You have to press the
ALT+TAB keys then to bring the DTM dialog to the front again. (#21665 -

Area button "No area" in message line of Freelance Operations shows too
many messages
All messages of those tags which have not been assigned to a specific plant area are
assigned to the area "No area". The area button "No area" in the message line of
Freelance Operations should show the sum of these mentioned messages only, butadditionally shows all system messages as well. (#24454 - RN_2016_009)
Control Aspect
No data in Control Aspect
In a running project the IP address of the OPC server which is used by the ControlAspect for reading data is changed. The modifications are loaded to Freelance
Operations; the new IP address is configured in the wizard of the Control Aspect.
No error is reported, but Control Aspect cannot establish the communication, and no
data are shown in the Control Aspect dialogs. (#23390 - RN_2013_035)

Workaround: The reason for this behavior is that in the DCOM settings the old IP
address is still set, no automatic change has been done. Please check the DCOMsettings and modify them accordingly.
Bulk Data Manager
Project Export to BDM
Error message during project export
During the export of a Freelance project to the Bulk Data Manager, this message is
shown several times: “.xls is already open. Reopening will cause any
changes you made to be discarded. Do you want to reopen .xls?"
Depending on the user action the export will be stopped or continued incompletely.
This problem occurs if identical names are used for different elements in the projecttree. This is allowed in Freelance Engineering for different hierarchical elements
like Task, Program list and Program.
During the export, different Excel sheets are created for the selected objects of the
project tree. Microsoft Excel does not support identical names for different sheets.

Workaround: Make sure that the names of all objects which are to be exported toBDM are unique.

Use the CD delivered with the product to install the Freelance software. Prior to
starting the installation procedure of these programs, accordingly prepare the PCs
by loading the appropriate Windows operating system and making the necessary
system settings.
System Requirements (Operating System)
All software packages of Freelance 2016 have been tested and released for use with
the operating systems
• Microsoft Windows 7 Professional and Enterprise SP1, 32 bit and 64 bit.
For more information on compatible and released additional software programs and
3rd party software please refer to the manual Getting Started, General Notes.
Installation of the Software
Follow the installation instructions in the manual Getting Started, Freelance
Installation.
RollUps and TCs provide important correction functions for errors that have been
discovered after the product release and corrections that were not available at that
point of time. Please open the RollUP&TC folder at the top folder level on your
software CD. There is a subfolder (RU1, RU2, and TC1, TC3 etc.) for each RollUpand TC. Please install first the RollUps and then the TCs, each in ascending order, if
two or more are available. Each subfolder contains a Release Note file with
installation instructions and short descriptions of the fixed errors.
Once you have installed your system as described in the Getting Started manual,
it may be required to install additional RollUps and Temporary Corrections TC.

Project Upgrade
Upgrading means changing from one Freelance version to a newer version. In this
process, existing project configurations can be taken over without any problems if
the upgrade is to the next higher revision level (e.g. from Freelance 2013 to
Freelance 2016). Make sure that all your project data are saved before starting the
new installation. For details refer to manual Getting Started, Upgrade an existing
version to the new version.
Antivirus program
The Freelance software has been tested with the antivirus program McAfee,
VirusScan Enterprise® (Version 8.8 Patch4) and Symantec Endpoint Protection®
(12.1.4013.4013).
For the up-to-date tested DAT files and Virus Definition Files refer to the document
2PAA149834 “Freelance daily verification of McAfee & Symantec updates”
available in the ABB Library. This document replaces the document 2PAA108235.
The Getting Started manual contains additional information about the usage of
virus scanners. Please follow the instructions given there.
Setups
Starting the Setup Procedure
The setup of Freelance software can be started from the CD using the autoplay
program

If a change for several versions (for example, from Freelance V9 to Freelance2016) is required, please contact the ABB Service Department or your local
ABB Representative for details and support.
The transmission rate of the AC 700F and AC 900F diagnostic interface was
changed to 19,2 kBit/s. When connecting a radio clock ensure that the
transmission rate of the radio clock and the controller match (see M&I AC 900F
and M&I AC 700F).

For usage with the 16 MByte CPU module PM 803F newer Ethernet modulesEI 811F, EI 812F and EI 813F were developed and released. Some of the
preexisting Ethernet modules can be used with the 16MByte CPU.

Using the modules DFE 01/EI 801F, DFE 02/EI 802F and DFE 03/EI 803F with
