Dear friends
The organizing committee extends a very warm invitation to participate in “CME
cum Update on History of Human Anatomy Dissection” on 10th
January 2015
(Saturday) , being organized by Department of Anatomy, Guru Gobind Singh
Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot, Punjab. The focus of this CME is on
exposure to the delegates about the historical aspects of the human body
dissections and to apprise them of the various phases through which it has
passed to achieve the present day status.
The History of Anatomy is full of imperative lessons in the art and science of the
discipline of anatomy, which ought to be learnt by us. As medical students not
only are we entrusted with the bodies of the patients we care for and learn from
in life, but also from those patients we are privileged to learn from in their
death. Dissection has persisted as a primary teaching tool for a long time.
Claudius Galen (130-200 A.D) was both a physician and an anatomist who
published more than 130 medical treatises, most of which focused on anatomy
.These treatises would form the basis of anatomical study for the next 1400
years. Andreas Vesalius, considered by many to be the first Great Anatomist, was
the first to advocate for the direct observation of anatomy in medical education
and research. There was still no legal source of cadavers, so Vesalius likely
conducted his dissections on bodies, obtained from graveyards. The First
Medical School was founded in America in 1765 at the College of Philadelphia.
The curriculum of this college included a vigorous anatomy course with
dissection laboratory. Human body dissection in India started at Calcutta on 10th
January 1836, by one ayurvedic physician, Madhusudhan Gupta.
During the modern era, anatomy thrived as a research science and dissection of
cadavers became a vital scientific tool. In addition, the use of surgery increased
and improved. Anatomy was thus essential, both in research and education, to
further improve and develop surgical techniques.
Kindly block your date i.e. 10th
January 2015 (Saturday)for this wonderful
historical event.
