Direct From Dawson Community partnership engages teens
Lester Public Library has offered
teen late nights for more than a
decade. Allowing teens their
own time in the library—after
hours, safely locked in, and
supervised by an interacting
staff—gives them time and
space to be themselves.
They play chess, board games
and video games, browse the
library’s collections (especially
our excellent YA collection that
includes comic books and
graphic novels), or simply sit
and chat.
Youth Services Coordinator
Terry Ehle gets out the library’s
trusty Pizza Pizzaz and dishes up
slices for all. The night always
culminates in an exuberant
and building-wide indoor
game of “Capture the Flag.”
Good and simple fun for teens,
yes; but also good for the
community as a whole. We’ve
viewed these late nights as an
investment in our community;
we believe that when
teenagers enjoy positive library
experiences, they become
community-minded adults.
And, of course, we want to be
part of the community effort to
keep teens safe and engaged
when they’re not in school.
We’ve addressed this effort in a
way that we think is pretty
unique: we’ve partnered with
Two Rivers Public Schools and
the Two Rivers Parks & Rec
Department to offer safe and
inexpensive activities for teens
almost every week throughout
the school year. The events are

2019 Teen Battle of the Books
Readers battle to win annual competition
Lester Public Library’s team took third place at the 2019
Manitowoc-Calumet Library System Battle of the Books
competition September 4 at Holy Family College.
Each year, a committee selects eight new young-adult titles for the competition. Team members have
the summer to read the selections, and then compete against other teams in the area to correctly
answer trivia questions about the books.
2019 LPL team members were Grace Schumacher, Karissa Nelson, Rosie Ehle, Georgia Krall, Alice Ehle,
Savannah Donati, Ethan Stokes, Emilia Hansen, Mackenzi Stokes, Suzie Ehle, Sabrina Yang and Emjay
Hilliker. They were coached by Allyson Stokes.
The group met throughout the summer to discuss the books and to quiz each other.
“The Battle of the Books is a wonderful way to get teens talking about books,” said Youth Services
Coordinator Terry Ehle. “The competition exposes them to new authors and titles in the world of YA
literature. And it’s a fun social experience for kids who love to read.”

billed as “TR Teen Nights” and we
three entities cross-promote the
activities online, in publications
and through school
announcements.
The schools offer events like open
gym and swim, activity nights,
dances, and trivia contests.
Certain football and basketball
games and track meets (like the
Oct. 4 football game against
Brillion) are specially-designated
“teen nights.” Teens are also
invited to the Oct. 18 TRHS
performance of “The Addams
Family.”
Two Rivers Parks & Rec offers teens
Community House space this fall
for cosmic dodgeball and glow-
in-the-dark Nerf wars. A much-
anticipated event scheduled for 7
p.m. Oct. 25 is “Zombies vs.
Humans Capture the Flag” at
Walsh Field. Want to be a zombie?
Arrive at 6:30 p.m. for makeup.
Here at the library, our
upcoming teen nights include
life-size PAC-MAN (7 p.m. Oct.
11) and, next month, a
Thanksgiving-themed escape
room challenge.
We’re proud of this special
collaboration between the
library, TR Public Schools and
Parks & Rec. Please support this
effort to provide positive teen
events in our community by
sharing information about the
various programs with the
teenagers in your life.
Find events at
www.lesterlibrary.org, the
library’s Facebook page, the
Two Rivers Parks & Recreation
Department Facebook page,
and the “Library Links” monthly
publication available at the
library and city hall. L.B. Clarke
students get a bookmark-sized
line-up of TR Teen Nights
monthly in their Friday folders as
well. And as always, you can
call the Help Desk at 793-7114
for more information.
