My name is Denise Quante and I am going to be a High
School Math Teacher. I went to Notre Dame High School
and it was the best 4 years of my life. I can’t wait to
become a teacher because of the teachers I had in high
school especially my Math teacher. I want to have an
impact on students the way my teachers had on me.
Currently I am a manager at Dierbergs Markets. I have
been working there since 2004 and have been promoted
several times. In my spare time, you can find me with my
family and friends, or playing volleyball. I have 3 older
brothers who are the best brothers anyone could ask for.
Two of them were just marred and my sister-in-laws are
awesome people as well. I play volleyball with my
brothers 3 times a week on competitive leagues.

Math Career Magazine Math Denise Quante
Rationale: Writing and personal experience in mathematics can help students understand different concepts in math. Reading listening, researching, interviewing, analyzing will help make concepts in math more substantial. Student will use math to create a written body of work that uses math in real life settings, which will make students realize why they are learning what the material. This will help students create their own opinions of math and maybe some students might find a special interest in math. This is also make students more aware of how math is used almost every day. Summary: Students will be making a magazine page for careers in math. The pages will be combined in to a magazine that I will put together. Students can look into one career that sparks their interest to create their page. Students will have to think about their future and what they may possibly want to do as a career and interview people in that field. They will find out how math is involved in their possible future career. At the end students will understand why we have to learn different topics in math in school. Literary Strategies (Learning Logs, Ask Your Partner, 3,2,1): During this project, students will create a “Learning Log” where they will reflect on thoughts and ideas. There will also be an “Ask Your Partner” day, where they will be paired up and able to ask each other questions about what they have written. They will discuss what they like about their papers and what they would like to know more about. Students will be able to include a few pictures and will create a fun “3, 2, 1” 3 things they learned, 2 they found interesting, and 1 question they have. Objectives (Bloom’s Taxonomy – Cognitive) Knowledge –Identifies math concepts Comprehension-Gives examples of math problems. Application –Relates to math problems and real life situations. Analysis –Identifies why math is important. Synthesis –Summarizes careers that use math and how it is important. Evaluation – Justifies rather the importance of math. Geographic Area: To be determined by the student’s selection. Materials and Resources: Classroom, Library, Computers Formative Assessment: Research Assignment, 3-2-1, Draft, and Learning Logs will all be graded bases on a rubric in a formative assessment way. We have been going over different topics this year in Algebra, and I want the students to think how this
can be used in the real world. Each of them are going to create a magazine page and at the end we will
put it all together to have a magazine, Math is the Path. I want the students to pick a career, research it
and create a magazine page to draw people to math.
Phase 2: Present the advance organizer
Hand out the handouts and graphic organizer for the students
Phase 3: Present Learning materials
Go over the handout in detail with the students
Phase 4: Application (Check for understanding)
Ask students if they have any questions or concerns.

Objectives:
To have the students get in pairs to discuss different careers in math Use the computer lab to start research and have students share with each other Students will explore, prepare for and seek educational and job opportunities in the math field

Materials Needed:
Computer Lab
Phase 1: Introduction Clarify aims and establish set
We will use the computer lab and to research careers and begin the research in the careers. Once you
get an idea, team up with a partner and help each other start researching. 15 minutes before class is over
I want the students to share with the class what you have found out.
Phase 2: Present information
The students will help each other pick a career if you haven’t done so already. Then start researching the
career. After you some information about your career, share it with the class.
Phase 3: Organize Students into learning teams
They can pick their partner, but I expect them to talk quietly about the topic and have information to
present to the class before the class is over.
Phase 4: Assist team work and study
As the students work, I will walk around to each pair to make sure everyone is on task and to answer any
questions
Phase 5: Test on materials
Have students present their information they learned in class.
Phase 6: Provide team recognition
Give Positive feedback to each of the groups.

The students can pick their partners, but I expect them to talk quietly about the topic and have information
to present to the class before the class is over.

List of Nothing In Particular Things I want to be remembered for Denise Quante February 22, 2012
As 2012 began I looked back on the past year and things that I have done and things that I want to change this year. I started to
think out of my shoes and how others perceive me and if that’s the person I want to be. So I started a list of things that I want to be
remembered for as I grow older and start new chapters of my life. My actions make up who I am now and how I will be remembered. The
following quote really got me thinking:
“Be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.”
Think about it for a few seconds. For those who have had dogs, you realize what this means. When I come home from work, pull
up in the driveway, my dog can sense I am close and starts pacing around waiting for the door to open and for me to walk through. As I
close my car door I can hear him getting excited as I hear jumping on the hardwood floors and yelps. I open the door; my dog is waiting
there wagging his tail like crazy, so excited running back and forth in the living room. I can just tell that this dog is crazy about me and I
just make his day everyday just be coming home. I realize it’s the small things in life that make the big picture complete.
Love for my family and friends. When I started thinking what is really important to me; family and friends are the first things that
popped into my head. I put my family then friends first in my life and will do anything for them. During high school I had an assignment to
write a program for my funeral. I know it’s a little strange but it made me think of my life. The main song I chose was “Because You Loved
Me” by Celine Dion, due to the line in the lyrics:
“I am everything I am because you loved me.”
I feel like I am the person I am because of my family and friends and a little bit of each of them is a part of who I am. I have met
many people in life and there are a very few who I don’t keep in touch with. I believe there are reasons why people come into our lives and
each person impacts each other in some way.
A Role Model. After working at Dierbergs for 8 years, I have become a role model to the new workers. I’m a hard worker and
managers can count on me to get things done. I have babysat for a family since the kids were born, and now the kids are 13 and 11 and
both are taller than me, looks like I’m looking up to them now. However, I have become a big role model in their life and they look to me as
an older sister, who they can come to with problems and questions. I hear what they think of their teachers and how I would want my
future students to think of me. As I become a teacher I will be a role model for many students. I have looked up to many of my teachers
and they are the reason that I want to become a teacher. I want to affect my future students as my teachers impacted me. Throughout high
school, I was known as a “suck up” just because I took the time to talk to teachers and find out who they were. Graduating was extremely
hard for me, because these teachers who I have talked to everyday and who helped me grow as a person would be out of my life.
In the last month of senior year, the school board announced that 3 of the teachers will not be returning next year. This news
didn’t impact people too much right away but it did to me. I knew that it wasn’t these teachers decision not to come back. We recently
acquired a new president of the school and she started making changes right away. See, these teachers that weren’t returning the following
year happened to have been dedicated teachers of Notre Dame over 30 years. I was furious with this news because the whole being and
attitude of this school came from these teachers and after 30 years of 100% commitment to Notre Dame they were just not asked back.
During a senior dinner with many of the school board and teachers there, I stood up and gave a speech of the top of my head about how
these teachers have impacted me and many other students. That they are the definition of what it means to be a teacher. Although the
president wasn’t thrilled about my speech, everyone gave these teachers a standing ovation. They had a smile on their face that I will never
forget.
My optimism. I tend to always try to find the good in things and see the glass have full. Being positive have gotten me through
many things and it can rub off on other people which will put them in a good mood. When people ask me how I am I always respond with
“Marvelous” or “Fabulous” or “Fantastic” etc. I think that when situations come at us, looking on the positive side will help everyone
involved. Like my mom always said “You get more bees with honey”. You can’t change things that happened but you can change your
attitude towards things. And I have learned in life that attitude is everything. Doesn’t matter what happens to you it’s how you handle it.
Optimists maybe let down a lot with the high expectation of things but it is more important to have a goal and fail rather than succeed at
everything and not have high goals.

Fun to be around. I am the kind of person that can find the fun in everything. I want people to want to hang out with me and know
they will have a good time; even if it’s just doing errands, going to the doctor or hanging around the house. I think that laughter is best
medicine for everything, and it is important to find the humor and fun in the big and small things in life.

One day at work, I was called in the back office, after a manager spotted me and another worker paying with walkie talkies. The
manager told explained to me that it appears that I don’t take this job to serious and I need to stop goofing off. Since I wanted to keep my
job; I changed my ways and after a week or two went by I felt they told me not to find the fun in the small things. People I worked with
made comments about my new attitude towards work. My attitude changed from having fun to being serious and doing your job only. I
found that those two weeks when I took the fun out of work, was the worst weeks at work in my 8 years of being there. I found a balance
between the two extreme attitudes because if you’re not having fun, nothing is worth it. I noticed that most of those that hold higher
position are characterized as mature, are the people that seem to never take the time and have fun. As a teacher I believe that students
will only enjoy coming to school, doing homework, and growing as a person if they are having fun. As a teacher I will put extreme
emphasis on having fun in everything. You can’t control what life throws at you, but you need to be able to know how to handle it, and the
key to that is laughter and fun.
Putting my heart into everything. Some people make think that wearing your heart on your sleeve can be a bad thing. However, I
believe that it is important to put your heart into everything. If you get personal with things you are more likely to do a better job at
things. For example: I use to hate writing before coming to UMSL but I was given writing assignments that I didn’t care about and only did
enough work to get a C in the class. In Eng 3100, I wrote a paper that actually means something to me and that I could relate to. Writing
about myself as a student with ADHD and how that affects me was one of the easiest papers to write. I also included how as a teacher you
help students. When I received my finial grade and a A on the top I was shocked. That was my first A in a writing assignment ever! At work
people may think that I get to personal with my co-workers and I need to realize that it is not personal but business. But I think that if I
spend over 1/3rd
of my day, 5 days a week, it has to be personal.
Leaving people with a part of me that somehow made their lives different. There have been many people I have met that have
made a difference in my life, and if I can at least reach out and touch one person, one student, one employee that they will always
remember me or the way I made them feel; then I succeeded at life. Each person is special in their own way and they should be showed
that they matter to someone multiple times a day. It might just be doing simple kind acts each day like; helping a elderly lady put grocery
bags in her car, or helping someone who’s car is broken down, but that little extra time you take out of your day can impact someone else
forever.
One day I was coming out of the DMV and saw a car stuck in the middle of the parking lot. It was a young girl who ran over a piece
of concrete and her car wouldn’t move. I took the time, helped her call a tow truck, and gave her a ride home. She told me how rare it is to
find people that will just help a stranger out of the kindness of their heart and she will always remember how I helped her.

In general I would like to be remember for a person who affected many people and when people think of me a smile will come to
their face. As I end different chapters in my life and start new ones, I have the opportunity the looks inside myself and see how I want to
change for the new people in my life. Currently, I work at Dierbergs and have been at the same store for 8 years, in a few weeks I will be
transferred to another store. Within those 8 years I have grown and become more mature, however, the people there still see me as a
young, immature, partying type of person. I know in my new position I need to change my image as a manager but keep the fun and youth
inside me that people love.
