•Wood for structural uses
Just a small percentage compared to concrete.
This is also due to the lack of knowledge of wood technology and the absence of clear rules and standards for the grading and use of wood for building.
Sometimes DIN 4074 is applied, above all in the restoration of historical buildings (theatres, churches…).
The use of green timber is normal.

•Wood for structural uses
Things are going to change soon:
A national law (T.U., Technical rules for constructions, Sept. 05) states, starting from April ’07, the compulsory use of graded and labelled timber in constructions.
Grading standard: UNI 11035 (NICoLe).
Still some confusion exists on many legal and technical details.

SOFIE ProjectThe SOFIE Project is a cooperative research project patronised by the Trento Province, Italy and conducted by the CNR-IVALSA.
It is a comprehensive research project analysing multi-storey buildings built with solid wooden panels with cross interlayers (named XLAM) considering every single aspect of the building behaviour such as static, fire, acoustic, thermal and, particularly, seismic performance.
The basic idea of SOFIE is to increase the use of Italian wood as structural material, offering a valid and cost-effective alternative to the traditional building systems and at the same time valorising an important local resource.

Generally used:Spruce (Picea abies)Planks 17 or 27 mm thick and 160 to200mm wide are planed and fingerjointed in length in order to achievefull-length lamellae.
Planks are machine graded (x-ray) and dried to 10-12% of m.c.
Use of graded material: according to German „Zulassungen“: 90% DIN S10, 10% DIN S7 (DIN 4074).
Assembled to big size panels (with a minimum of 3 and a maximumof 11 layers) and then cured under pressure.

Advantages of XLAM-method:
• Massive wooden panels with good mechanical properties, thermal insulation, fire resistance, acoustics and high stability.
•Massive construction system very attractive to European public, traditionally unfavourable to „lightweight“ timber buildings.

During the initial stages of COST E15, it was assessed that most of the information on QUALITY, especially Drying Quality, is provided to the customer by the manufacturer and not by other parties, like Institutions, Consultants, etc.
Only some companies have their own internal Quality Control system;

The assistance given in this domain by the manufacturers is normally limited, however, to single issues (such as moisture content definition, distortion, etc.). The idea is of course to implement a complete QUALITY CONTROL but rarely the companies disposes of sufficient resources (time and personnel) to do this.
Pre-requisite for Quality Control is the presence of trained personnel in the factory and/or collaborations or partnerships with outside consultants or Institutions.

Perception of Quality is always vague and undefined. It is often something of subjective.
Strong need of rules for quality assessment…but, above all a deep and well planned action for training and information transfer.
