News The season is half over ! If you have not taken a tour yet, be sure to connect with your past this month. Brett and Julia would be delighted to explain the displays. Friday burger and pie lunches remain popular and we are indebted to our volunteer burger and pie cooks, our volunteer helpers, faithful customers and the "Village GREEN TEAM" --not to forget Dorothy and Rick who make sure we have an ongoing supply of burgers and lemonade. Our P.P.P. float with a wedding theme was constructed and pulled by Ken and his enthusiastic crew. Steve had the wrench dis-play on the lawn for all to enjoy July 6 at bur-gers. The display now has a permanent home in the museum. David Sylvester of WRENCH WORKS donated a large set of wrenches for a draw. They were won by lucky Lorna McKibbon . Kate created a display on the bulletin board celebrating Nellie McClung's connec-tion with the area. Neil installed a new buzzer system to let the girls know when someone enters the building. Tuesday, July 24 we entertained in the historic St. John the Divine Church with Music, Music, Music. Tannis Nostadt starred on the pump organ while Dorothy Haithwaite entertained as our jovial M.C. capably assisted by Mary Sylvester. Your local museum is a treas-ure. Enjoy it before

SEAFOOT: The family of Do-reen Seafoot would like to ex-press their deepest gratitude for

all the support, hugs, food and words of en-couragement that we have been receiving since the passing of our Mom, Gramma and Great-Gramma Doreen. We are thankful for the last few weeks that she was able to visit with so many friends and that her passing was painless. She gave us many happy memories that we will cherish forever. Thank you to the staff on A3; you were all amazing. To Dr. Maier, who checked on us daily, Memories Chapel for your profes-sional assistance, Shirley McBurney, who Mom specifically requested to officiate and Rev. Doug Craig, who was present for Mom’s last moments with us, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Sincerely, the Doreen Seafoot family

CHALANCHUK: Leonard and I would like to thank all our relatives, friends and co-workers for making this a wonderful place to live and bring up Terry and Jennifer. We are only going as far as Brandon and would love to hear from you. We are at the lake for the summer but our number in Brandon is 204-727-0199. We’ll miss you all.

Leonard and Joyce

COMMENT: I would like to thank Walter and Wendy Cullen and anyone else responsible for orga-nizing a reunion of a high school class from 50 years ago. Growing up in Wawanesa was a blessing and we did not realize how fortunate we were.

In Loving Memory KERBIS: Paul

passed away August 5, 2006

It doesn’t take a special day to bring you to our mind.

For days without a thought of you are very hard to find.

You always tried to do your best. Your heart was true and tender.

You simply lived for those you loved, and those you loved remember.

Lovingly remembered, forever loved,

Myrna, Scott, Karen

& families

The new roof is underway at St. Paul’s with the annex and small roof have been completed! The pitch of the roof is proving to be a bit of a challenge but slow and steady wins the race! The

main roof will be completed the first or second week of August. Any one willing to donate some labor please call/text Steve Trowbridge at 204-573-3942. A work bee will be organized to finish "Raising the Roof" at St. Paul’s. Thank you again to all who have donated to this project; without every one’s support this would not be possible. Rev. Chris and Audrey are away on a well deserved vacation. We look forward to welcoming them back refreshed August 19. In case of emer-gency please contact Deb Chapman 204-824-3414. August 17 we will be serving pie at the mu-seum with burger days. All proceeds will go to the building fund for the continued restoration of St. Paul’s. Have a wonderful summer!

Words of Wisdom!

Blessed are those who can give without remembering

We wish to ex-press our sincere appre-ciation to everyone that has made the beautiful community floral dis-plays possible this year. The colour theme has turned out to be quite a stunning combination. The cost of the baskets is substantial and we are most grateful to the generous donors that support this program. Thanks to Ryan at Oakland Inn, Wawanesa Foods, Wawanesa Mutual, Hope Rebekah Lodge, Jamieson Fu-neral Services, Guild Insurance, Wawanesa Heritage Co-op, The Rusty Bucket, Bob Daymond, Wawanesa Lions and Oakland Wawanesa Municipality. The flowers in the garden and some of the planters around town are from Lucy's Flowers and Gifts and purchased by the many donations left with Shirley McBurney at her shop. We can't thank Shirley enough for her time doing this, and for the generous individuals whose donations, again totally covered the cost of the bedding plants. Thanks to Mark and Debbie Hofer for bed-ding plant donations as well. Thank you to Drew Wilton for keeping the watering sys-tem working and to the Green Team for their faithful help.

How to protect yourself, your child and your pets from

Tick-Borne Diseases Perform a thorough TICK CHECK after

being outdoors. Inspect yourself, your children and pets

for ticks and remove any ticks found as soon as possible.

Do not stop if you find one tick – there may be more.

Bathing soon after coming indoors is a good way to find ticks.

Be sure the lighting is good and pay atten-tion to areas where ticks may be difficult to spot such as armpits, the belly button, groin, behind the knees, places where clothing is tight (such as watch straps and underwear elastics) and in hair. Ticks may be even more difficult to see on darker skin, or skin that has a lot of freckles or moles.

Use trails, whenever possible, and stay to the centre of hiking trails or paths.

Wear light-coloured clothing to make it easier to see ticks crawling on your cloth-ing.

Wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt so that most exposed skin is covered.

Tuck your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks; this will make it more difficult for the ticks to attach to your skin.

Apply an appropriate repellent (it should state ‘for use against ticks’ on the product label) on clothing and exposed skin. Al-ways read and follow instructions for use.

Launder clothing that has been worn out-doors. A hot dryer cycle will kill ticks. Be sure to check items such as backpacks and towels which may have come into contact with vegetation while outdoors.

"Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich, by promising to protect each from the other." ~Oscar Amringer, "the Mark Twain of American Socialism." "I offered my opponents a deal: if they stop telling lies about me, I will stop telling the truth about them." ~Adlai Stevenson, campaign speech, 1952. "A politician is a fellow who will lay down your life for his country." ~Texas Guinan, 19th century Ameri-can businessman.

July has sped by for all of us. The Lions Club was busy during Pound, Pail and Paddle with a float in the parade and floating the ducks in the pool for the Duck Race. Winners of the race were Shane Sommerville, Harold Navid and Krista LaRoque. The Club donated sun shades to the Wawanesa Pool. Lions thank the folks who put them up and are pleased to see them in use daily. This project was the Lions Club of Wawanesa Centennial Pro-ject to recognize 100 years of Lions Clubs in the world. The usual monthly meat draw was held as well as the weekly Chase the Ace (between 6 and 7 pm every Friday at the Oakland Inn). Harold Navid won a Chase Pot as well. The next meat draw is Au-gust 17 starting at 5 pm to be followed by Chase the Ace. The Lions Club is always collecting spent vehicle batteries. If there are some around your garage or shop as you get ready for fall, drop them off at the Lions Clubhouse or call 824-2457 to request a pick-up. August 25 is the Lions Country Fair for Children. It will be held at the Recreation Centre and Grounds from 11:30 am till 3 pm. This is a free event for all children of the community. The only thing that will need money is the concession booth that is run by the Lions. There will be races, games, bouncy cas-

tle, petting zoo, pony rides, a visit from the Bubble Man and more. A big thanks goes out to businesses in our community for helping to sponsor this event. Please see the advert in this issue of the Lioness Express, tell your friends, write it on the calendar and plan to attend as a family.

Over the last cou-ple of weeks the tax statements have been distributed. As indicated we are seeing the farm-ers with a dispropor-tionate tax increase.

Some farmers are concerned for the amount of their assessments and our CAO is giving them some helpful information on contact-ing the assessors’ office to deal with this issue. We are also seeing tax increases and decreases throughout the rural and village on the residential ratepayers. As we all know, taxes will never be totally fair, espe-cially when the province dictates the as-sessments. Over the last few weeks there have been statements and accusations on the dis-tribution of taxes and tax savings. Mr. Sitko has indicated that the village should be sav-ing $200,000.00 per year, but to accom-plish that would require all taxes to be dou-bled. It is evident that Mr. Sitko is not aware of the taxes involved in the Village, so I am attaching a copy of my 2018 tax statement for everyone to review. I am sure Mr. Sitko will put a copy of his tax state-ment on the facebook sites for everyone to compare. It is time to take a step back and real-ize how we are damaging our municipality with the ongoing division. The amalgama-tion has happened and it will not be changed back. We are one municipality and we should be looking for ways to help our fellow citizens out. We don’t need a team of candidates to attack others, we need in-

dividual candidates that want to work to-gether to move the municipality forward progressively. We have first class facilities that eve-ryone in the municipality should recognize and appreciate. Our abundance of assets are there to use and share with one another and to be proud of. With summer upon us we are re-minded that the second leading cause of death or injury in young people in Manitoba is from drowning. This year the Wawanesa swimming pool has a record 400 children signed up for lessons this summer and there were a further 155 children in the school program in June. This is a life skill and we should be very proud of our facility opera-tions. If just one life is saved from these les-sons, that’s an incredible achievement. We also have the fabulous kids’ soc-cer program in Nesbitt, 120 children enjoy-ing this great team sport weekly during the spring and at the same time everyone has access to a wonderful meal while supporting the Nesbitt hall. Lets congratulate our vol-unteers throughout the municipality for their work in Carroll, Nesbitt and Wawanesa; they make our communities better. As we approach election day let’s all keep the process respectful and keep ever mindful of what we are doing to our Mu-nicipality as we live in it and as it is viewed by those looking in at us.

Famous Quotes

A's for arthritis; B's the bad back, C is for chest pains, perhaps cardiac. D is for dental decay and decline; E is for eyesight, can't read that top line. F is for fissures and fluid retention, G is for gas, which I'd rather not mention. H is high blood pressure--I'd rather it low; I for incisions with scars you can show. J is for joints, out of socket, won't mend. K is for knees that crack when they bend. L for libido, what happened to sex? M is for memory, I forget! What comes next?

N is neuralgia, in nerves way down low; O is for osteo, the bones that don't grow! P for prescriptions, I have quite a few, Just give me a pill and I'll be good as new. Q is for queasy, is it fatal or flu? R for reflux, one meal turns to two. S for sleepless nights, counting my fears. T for tinnitus; there's bells in my ears. U is for urinary; big troubles with flow; V is for vertigo, that's "dizzy" you know. W is for worry, NOW what's going round? X is for X-ray, and what might be found. Y is another year I'm left here behind, Z is for zest that I still have--in my mind!

SEAFOOT: On July 20, 2018, with her fam-ily by her side, Lillian Doreen Seafoot (nee Hunter) passed away peacefully at the As-siniboine Centre. She was 85 years old. Do-reen was born in Bran-don on March 28, 1933,

the youngest of four children to Arthur and Janie Hunter. Her family farmed in the Brandon area, then moved to the Chesley District in 1937. Doreen attended school at Chesley and completed her high school education at St. Michael’s Acad-emy in Brandon. She then attended Nor-mal School in Winnipeg, graduating in 1953. Doreen was a teacher at the Fair Valley and Botany schools in Southwest-ern MB until she married Morris Seafoot of Carroll, MB on January 21, 1956. Mor-ris and Doreen lived on a farm near Nesbitt and raised five children. Life cen-tered around farming and family. They also enjoyed going to baseball games, playing cards with friends, and dancing at social events. Doreen was highly in-volved in Nesbitt and Wawanesa commu-nity activities. She was the church organist in Nesbitt and an active member of the UCW for many years. Doreen was ath-letic, participated in sports, and her com-petitive nature was known to many. She was a fastball pitcher and led her UCT Centennial team to the provincial champi-onship in 1967. She was an avid curler, winning many prizes and trophies at local bonspiels. In her later years,

she continued to curl, and she also took up golf, which became her passion. In 2013, she moved from the farm and into a suite in Bran-don’s west end. Doreen was a kind and gener-ous woman of faith; a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. Doreen had a wide circle of friends who will miss her dearly. She was very outgoing, always showing a genuine interest in listening to and helping others, donating to charities, and maintaining connections with her com-munities. Doreen is survived by her five children, Ronald (Brenda), Sharon (Kevin), Linda (Ken), Beverley (Mike), and Nadine (Dave); eight grandchildren, Curtis (Crystal), Dane (Lyndsay), Bryan (Leanne), Jason (Helen), Kendra (Ian), Breanna (Dave), Shane, Braden (Carly); three great-grandchildren, Sienna, Lincoln and Noah; her brother Gordon Hunter, and nieces and neph-ews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Morris, her brother William Hunter, and sister Muriel MacPherson. A ceremony to celebrate Doreen’s life was held at the Central United Church in Brandon on July 25, 2018 with a private family interment taking place at Carroll Cemetery.

Beyond the sunset, A hand will guide me To God, the Father,

Whom I adore; His glorious presence, His words of welcome,

Will be my portion On that fair shore.
