Sepam 1000+8
Phase overcurrent (ANSI 50/51)Three-phase protection against overloads and phase-to-phase short-circuits.The protection comprises four units:c IDMT or definite time,c instantaneous or time-delayed.
Sepam 1000+ offers a number of tripping curves:c definite time (DT),c IDMT.
The IDMT curves also include a reset time which is used for:c detection of restriking faults,c coordination with electromechanical relays.
Earth fault (ANSI 50/51N or 50/51G)Connection and equipment earth fault protection.Earth faults may be detected by:c three phase currents (3I sum),c a special core balance CT, CSH120 or CSH200, according to the requireddiameter; this method provides the highest sensitivity. Selection between tworatings (2 A and 20 A) provides a very wide setting range.c a current transformer (1 A or 5 A), combinedwith a CSH30 interposing ring CT.
The protection comprises four units:c IDMT or definite time,c instantaneous or time-delayed.
The characteristic curves are the same as those for the phase current overcurrentprotection. Each set point has a reset time setting (by an adjustable timer hold with definitetime characteristic) that allows restriking faults to be detected.
Each set point has a 2 nd harmonic restraint in order to ensure stability duringtransformer energizing.
Negative sequence / unbalance (ANSI 46)Protection against phase unbalance.Sensitive protection against 2-phase faults on long feeders.Protection of equipment against temperature build-up caused by an unbalancedsupply or wrong phase rotation or the loss of a phase and protection against lowlevels of phase-to-phase overcurrent.IDMT or definite time characteristics.
Thermal overload (ANSI 49)Protection of equipment against thermal damage caused by overloads.
The thermal capacity used is calculated according to a mathematical model whichtakes into account:c RMS current values,c ambient temperature. The function comprises:c an adjustable alarm set point,c an adjustable tripping set point,v transformer application. The model takes into account the transformer heat rise and cooling time constantsaccording to whether natural or forced ventilation is used (ONAN, ONAF) by logicinput.v motor application. The model takes into account:- two time constants: the heat rise time constant, used when the motor is running, and the cooling time constant, used when the motor is stopped,- effect of negative sequence current on rotor heating.
An additional setting may be used to adapt the protection to fit the motor thermalwithstand given by the experimental hot and cold curves provided by theequipment manufacturer.
The thermal protection may be inhibited by a logic input when this is requiredby the process running conditions.
Phase undercurrent (ANSI 37)Protection of pumps against the consequences of a loss of priming. The protection detects time-delayed current drops that correspond to motorno-load operation, characteristic of the loss of pump priming.
Protections
Sepam 1000+ 9
Excessive starting time / locked rotor / (ANSI 48/51LR) (1)
Protection of motors that are liable to start with overloads or insufficient supplyvoltage and/or that drive loads that are liable to jam (e.g. crushers). The locked rotor function is an overcurrent protection that is only confirmed aftera time delay that corresponds to the normal starting time.
Starts per hour (ANSI 66) (1)
Protection against overheating caused by too frequent starts.Checking of the number of:c starts per hour (or adjustable time period),c consecutive starts. The protection inhibits motor energizing for a preset time period once thepermissible limits have been reached.
Recloser (ANSI 79)Automation device used to reclose the circuit breaker after tripping triggered by atransient fault on a line (the function includes 4 parameterizable reclosing cycles).
Thermostat, Buchholz (temperature, gas and pressure detector)Protection of transformers against temperature rises and internal faults via logicinputs linked to devices integrated in the equipment.
Temperature monitoring (RTDs) (ANSI 38/49T)Protection against abnormal overheating of motor windings and/or bearingsequipped with RTDs.The protection includes 2 independent set points that are adjustable for each RTD.
Positive sequence undervoltage (ANSI 27D), (ANSI 47)Motor protection against malfunctioning due to insufficient or unbalanced supplyvoltage. Detection of phase rotation. In order for this protection to be used, voltagetransformers must be connected to Sepam to measure U21 and U32.
Remanent undervoltage (ANSI 27R)Monitoring of the clearing of voltage sustained by rotating machines after circuitopening. The protection is used to prevent transient electrical and mechanicalphenomena that are caused by fast re-energizing of motors. It monitors phase-to-phase voltage U21 or phase-to-neutral voltage V1.
Phase-to-phase undervoltage (ANSI 27)Protection used either for automated functions (transfer, load shedding) or toprotect motors against undervoltage. The protection monitors the drop in each ofthe phase-to-phase voltages being metered.
Phase-to-neutral undervoltage (ANSI 27S)Protection used to detect phase-to-earth faults (in isolated neutral systems).
Overvoltage (ANSI 59)Protection against abnormally high voltage or checking that there is sufficientvoltage for power supply transfer (set point 1) and checking of phase-to-phasevoltages U32 and U21 (set point 2).
Neutral voltage displacement (ANSI 59N)Detection of insulation faults in ungrounded systems by measurement of neutralvoltage displacement. The protection is generally used with transformer incomersor busbars. The function includes 2 set points.
Overfrequency (ANSI 81H)Protection against abnormally high frequency.
Underfrequency (ANSI 81L)Detection of variances with respect to the rated frequency, in order to maintaina high quality power supply. The protection may be used for overall trippingor for load shedding.
Rate of change of frequency / ROCOF (ANSI 81R)Protection used for fast disconnection of a source feeding a power network when afault occurs or to check load shedding.
(1) possibility of motor re-acceleration to be taken into account by a logic input.

Control and monitoring
Sepam 1000+ performs the basic control andmonitoring functions necessary for the operation ofthe electrical network, thereby reducing the need forauxiliary relays.
The control and monitoring functions may beparameterized using the SFT 2841 software package, however each type of Sepam has parameter settingby default which allows easier commissioning in themost frequent cases of use.
Two control modes are availablec Integrated circuit breaker control. This logical function deals with all the circuit breakermaking and breaking conditions based on positiondata, external control and recloser protectionfunctions, etc…c Individual parameter setting of output relays.Control of output relays according to an allocationmatrix.
Breaking device controlSepam is used to control breaking devices equippedwith different types of closing and tripping coils:c circuit breakers with shunt trip or undervoltagetrip units (parameter setting on front panel (1)
or via SFT 2841),c latching contactors with shunt-trip units.
Output relay control (standard or fail-safe) may beset.By default, the program logic is adapted to controla circuit breaker with a shunt trip unit.Open and close control via the communication link.
Latching / acknowledgment (ANSI 86)Output relay latching may be parameterized. Latchedtripping orders are stored and must be acknowledgedin order for the device to be put back into service.
The user acknowledges via the keypad or remotelyvia a logic input or the communication link.
Inhibit closing (ANSI 69)Sepam inhibits the closing of the circuit breaker orcontactor according to the operation conditions.
Inhibit thermal protectionThermal protection tripping may be inhibited via alogic input.
Re-accelerationAllows a logic input to take into account the restartingof an unstopped motor.
Remote trippingCircuit breakers or contactors may be remote-controlled via a logic input or via the communicationlink.
Inhibit remote controlA logic input inhibits the circuit breaker remote controlmode via the communication link.
Switching of settings groupsUsed to switch from on group of phase currentand earth fault protection settings to another one.The switch may be made by a logic input or viathe communication link.
Logic discrimination (ANSI 68)This function allows quick, selective tripping of the phase overcurrent and earthfault protection relays, whether definite time or IDMT, without requiring the useof time intervals between upstream and downstream protection devices. The downstream relay transmits a blocking input signal if the protection devices’set points are exceeded.
The upstream relay receives the blocking input signal on the logic input, used forthe inhibition function. A saving mechanism ensures the operation of the protectionin the event of an inhibition link failure.
Annunciation (ANSI 30)Sepam indicates the appearance of alarms by:c signal lamps on the front panel,c messages on the display.
The addressing of the signal lamps may be parameterized.
The sequence is as follows (advanced UMI):c when an event appears, the signal lamp goes on and the related message isdisplayed,c the user presses the “clear” key to erase the message,c after the fault disappears and the “reset” key is pressed, the signal lamp goes offand the protection is reset,c the list of alarm messages remains accessible ( key) and may be cleared bypressing the “clear” key.
Remote annunciationUsed to remote information via the communication link.Information such as circuit breaker position, SF6 fault alarm, etc.
Trip circuit supervisionDetects trip circuit faults (shunt trip units). Detects open/closed positiondiscrepancy faults (undervoltage trip units).
WatchdogIndicates Sepam unavailability.

Assignment of CT (remote control orders)
Remote indications and remote controlordersThe communication link provides Sepam 1000+ with:c 64 remote indications (TS) which correspond to the different states of theprotection and monitoring functions,c 16 remote control orders (TC) may be used to control certain circuit breakerfunctions.
The remote indications (TS) and remote control orders (TC) are pre-assignedaccording to the types of Sepam 1000+ in accordance with the chart opposite.
c 10 digital inputs state.
Remote control modeRemote control orders may be carried out in 2 modes (chosen by overallparameter setting for all remote control orders):c direct mode: the remote control order (TC, transmitted command) is effective assoon as it is received,c “SBO” (select before operate) mode. The SBO mode involves two steps:v selection of the remote control order to be sent (STC),v checking by reading over the selection again,v execution of the associated remote control order (TC).c remote control orders can be globally inhibited via the I25 logic input accordingto the program logic parameter setting.
Communication interface modulesThese moduiles allow simple, dependable implementation of the RS485 link. The power supply for the RS485 communication interfaces is provided, via thenetwork cable, by a single accessory that may be used to connect up to 25modules.A shielded cable is used to wire the distributed power supply. The characteristics of the cable recommended for interconnecting the ACE 949-2or ACE 959 modules are as follows:c twisted pair with tinned copper braid shielding, coverage: > 65%,c characteristic impedance:120 Ω,c gauge: AWG 24,c resistance per unit length: < 100 Ω / km,c capacitance between conductors: < 60 pF/ m,c capacitance between conductor and shielding: < 100 pF/ m.

Negative sequence /unbalance
OperationNegative sequence / unbalance protection:c picks up when the negative sequence componentof the phase currents is greater than the set point,c it is time-delayed. The time delay may be definiteor IDMT time (see curve).
The negative sequence current Ii is calculatedfor the 3 phase currents:
If Sepam is connected to 2 phase current sensorsonly, the negative sequence current is:
the two formulas are equivalent when there is noresidual current (earth fault).
Definite time delay
For Ii > Is, the time delay is definite (independent of Ii)and equal to T.
IDMT time delayFor Ii > Is, the time delay depends on the value of Ii/Ib(Ib: basis current of the protected equipment definedwhen the general parameters are set)T corresponds to the time delay for Ii/Ib = 5.
The tripping curve is defined according to the following equations:c for Is/Ib i Ii/Ib i 0.5

Operation curveThe protection gives a trip order when the heat rise E,calculated according to the measurement of anequivalent current Ieq, is greater than the set pointEs.
The greatest permissible continuous current is
I = Ib Es
The protection tripping time is set by the timeconstant T.
The calculated heat rise depends on the currentconsumed and the previous heat rise state.c The cold curve defines the protection tripping timebased on zero heat rise.c The hot curve defines the protection tripping timebased on 100% nominal heat rise.
Alarm set point, tripping set pointTwo set points may be set for heat rise:c Es1: alarm.c Es2: tripping.
“Hot state” set pointWhen the function is used to protect a motor, thisfixed set point is designed for detection of the hotstate used by the number of starts function.
Heat rise and cooling time constantsFor self-ventilated rotating machines, cooling is more
effective when the machine is running than when it is stopped. Running andstopping of the equipment are calculated from the value of the current:c running if I > 0.1 Ib,c stopped if I < 0.1 Ib.
Two time constants may be set:c T1: heat rise time constant: concerns equipment that is running,c T2: cooling time constant: concerns equipment that is stopped.
Accounting for harmonicsThe current measured by the thermal protection is an RMS 3-phase currentwhich takes into account harmonics up to number 17.
Accounting for ambient temperatureMost machines are designed to operate at a maximum ambient temperatureof 40°. The thermal overload function takes into account the ambient temperature(Sepam 1000+ equipped with the temperature sensor option (1)) to increasethe calculated heat rise value when the temperature measured exceeds 40°.
Increase factor: fa = T max - 40°T max - T ambient
T max is the machine’s maximum temperature.T ambient is the measured temperature.
Adaptation of the protection to motor thermal withstandMotor thermal protection is often set based on the hot and cold curves suppliedby the machine manufacturer. To fully comply with these experimental curves, additional parameters must be set:c initial heat rise, Eso, is used to reduce the cold tripping time.

c a second group of parameters (time constants and set points) is used to takeinto account thermal withstand with locked rotors. This second set of parametersis taken into account when the current is greater than an adjustable set point Is.
Accounting for negative sequence currentIn the case of motors with coiled rotors, the presence of a negative sequencecomponent increases the heat rise in the motor. The negative sequencecomponent of the current is taken into account in the protection by the equation
leq = Iph2 + K. Ii
2in which Iph is the greatest phase current
Ii is the negative sequence component of the current
K is an adjustable factor
K may have the following values: 0 - 2.25 - 4.5 - 9
For an asynchronous motor, K is determined as follows:

Start inhibitThe thermal overload protection can inhibit theclosing of the motor’s control device until the heat risedrops back down below a value that allows restarting.
This value takes into account the heat rise producedby the motor when starting.
The inhibition function is grouped together with thestarts per hour protection and the indication STARTINHIBIT informs the user.
Saving of heat riseWhen the protection trips, the current heat rise, increased by 10 %(1), is saved. The saved value isreset to zero when the heat rise decreases sufficientlyfor the time before starting to be zero. The savedvalue is used when the power returns after a Sepampower failure, so as to start up again with the heatrise that triggered tripping.(1) increasing by 10 % makes it possible to take into accountthe average heat rise of motors when starting.
Inhibition of trippingTripping of the thermal overload protection may beinhibited by logic input I26 (according to parametersetting) when required by the process.
Accounting for two operating ratesA power transformer often has two operating modes(e.g. ONAN and ONAF).
The two groups of parameters in the thermal overloadprotection take into account these two operatingmodes.
Switching from one mode to the other is controlledby a logic input I26 (according to parameter setting). It is done without losing the heat rise value.
User informationThe following information is available for the user:
c time before restart enabled (in case of inhibitionof starting),c time before tripping (with constant current),c heat rise.

Example of thermal overloadsettings for a motor
Example 1The following data are available:c time constants for on operation T1 and offoperation T2:v T1 = 25 min,v T2 = 70 min.c maximum curve in steady state: Imax/Ib = 1.05.
Setting of tripping set point Es2Es2 = (Imax/Ib)2 = 110%
Please note: if the motor absorbs a current of 1.05 Ibin steady state, the heat rise calculated by the thermaloverload protection will reach 110%.
Setting of alarm set point Es1Es1 = 90% (I/Ib = 0.95).
Knegative: 4.5 (usual value)
The other thermal overload parameters do not needto be set. They are not taken into account by default.
Example 2The following data are available:c motor thermal resistance in the form of hot and coldcurves (see solid line curves in Figure 1),c cooling time constant T2,c maximum steady state current: Imax/Ib = 1.05.
Setting of tripping set point Es2Es2 = (Imax/Ib)2 = 110%
Setting of alarm set point Es1:Es1 = 90% (I/Ib = 0.95).
The manufacturer’s hot/cold curves (1) may be used todetermine the heating time constant T1.
For an overload of 2*Ib, the value t/T1 = 0.0339 (2) is obtained.
In order for Sepam to trip at the point 1 (t = 70 s), T1 is equal to 2065 sec ≈ 34 min.
With a setting of T1 = 34 min, the tripping time is obtained based on a cold state(point 2). In this case, it is equal to t/T1 = 0.3216 ⇒ t ⇒ 665 sec, i.e. ≈ 11 min, which is compatible with the thermal resistance of the motor when cold.
The negative sequence factor is calculated using the equation defined on page 34.
The parameters of the second thermal overload relay do not need to be set. They are not taken into account by default.
Example 3The following data are available:c motor thermal resistance in the form of hot and cold curves(see solid line curves in Figure 1),c cooling time constant T2,c maximum steady state current: Imax/Ib = 1.1.
Setting of tripping set point Es2Es2 = (Imax/Ib)2 = 120%
Setting of alarm set point Es1Es1 = 90% (I/Ib = 0.95).
The time constant T1 is calculated so that the thermal overload protection tripsafter 100 s (point 1).
With t/T1 = 0.069 (I/Ib = 2 and Es2 = 120%):⇒ T1 = 100s / 0.069 = 1449 sec ≈ 24 min.
The tripping time starting from the cold state is equal to:
t/T1 = 0.3567 ⇒ t = 24 min*0.3567 = 513 s (point 2’).
This tripping time is too long since the limit for this overload current is 400 s(point 2).
If the time constant T1 is lowered, the thermal overload protection will trip earlier, below point 2.
There risk that motor starting when hot will not be possible also exists in this case(see Figure 2 in which a lower Sepam hot curve would intersect the starting curvewith U = 0.9 Un).
The Es0 parameter is a setting that is used to solve these differences by loweringthe Sepam cold curve without moving the hot curve.
In this example, the thermal overload protection should trip after 400 s startingfrom the cold state.
The following equation is used to obtain the Es0 value:
Protection functions (cont’d)
(1) When the machine manufacturer provides both a timeconstant T1 and the machine hot/cold curves, the use ofthe curves is recommended since they are more accurate.

In numerical values, the following is obtained: Use of the additional setting groupWhen a motor rotor is locked or is turning very slowly, its thermal behavior isdifferent from that with the rated load. In such conditions, the motor is damaged byoverheating of the rotor or stator. For high power motors, rotor overheating is mostoften a limiting factor.
The thermal overload parameters chosen for operation with a low overload are nolonger valid.
In order to protect the motor in this case, “excessive starting time” protection maybe used.
Nevertheless, motor manufacturers provide the thermal resistance curves whenthe rotor is locked, for different voltages at the time of starting.
Figure 4: Locked rotor thermal resistance
In order to take these curves into account, the second thermal overload relay maybe used.
The time constant in this case is, in theory, the shortest one: however, it should notbe determined in the same way as that of the first relay.
The thermal overload protection switches between the first and second relay ifthe equivalent current Ieq exceeds the Is value (set point current).

By setting Es0 = 31%, point 2’ is moved downward toobtain a shorter tripping time that is compatible withthe motor’s thermal resistance when cold(see Figure 3).
Please note: A setting Es0 = 100% therefore meansthat the hot and cold curves are the same.

Protection functions (cont’d)
Excessive starting time,locked rotor
OperationThis function is three-phase.It comprises two parts:c excessive starting time: during starting, the protection picks up when oneof the 3 phase currents is greater than the set point Is for a longer period of timethan the ST time delay (normal starting time),c locked rotor:v at the normal operating rate (after starting), the protection picks up when oneof the 3 phase currents is greater than the set point Is for a longer period of timethan the LT time delay of the definite time type.v locked on start: large motors may have very long starting time, due to their inertia or the reduce voltage supply. This starting time is longer thanthe permissive rotor blocking time. To protect such a motor LTS timer initiate a tripif a start has been detected (I > Is) or if the motor speed is zero. For a normal start, the input I23 (zero-speed-switch) disable this protection.
Motor re-accelerationWhen the motor re-accelerates, it consumes a current in the vicinity of the startingcurrent (> Is) without the current first passing through a value less than 10% of Ib.The ST time delay, which corresponds to the normal starting time, may bereinitialized by a logic data input for particular uses (input I22).c reinitialize the excessive starting time protection,c set the locked rotor protection LT time delay to a low value.
Starting is detected when the current consumed is 10% greater than the Ib curent.

OperationThis function is three-phase.It picks up when the number of starts reachesthe following limits:c maximum number of starts allowed per periodof time (P) (Nt),c maximum allowed number of consecutivehot starts (Nh),c maximum allowed number of consecutivecold starts (Nc),c the function indicates the number of starts stillallowed before the maximum, if the protection has notpicked up. The number of starts depends on themotor’s thermal state,c waiting time before a start is allowed, if theprotection has picked up.
Starting is detected when the current consumedbecomes greater than 10% of the Ib current.
The number of consecutive starts is the number starts counted duringthe last P/Nt minutes, Nt being the number of starts allowed per period.
The motor hot state corresponds to the overshooting of the fixed set point(50% heat rise) of the thermal overload function.
When the motor re-accelerates, it undergoes a stress similar to that of startingwithout the current first passing through a value less than 10% of Ib, in which casethe number of starts is not incremented.
It is possible however to increment the number of starts when a re-accelerationoccurs by a logic data input (input I22).
Characteristics
ReadoutThe number of starts and the waiting time may beaccessed via:c the display (1) using the key,c the screen of a PC with SFT 2841 software,c the communication link.
ClearingThe number of starts counters may be cleared, usinga password, via:c the display using the clear key (1),c the screen of a PC with SFT 2841 software.

Operation
Positive sequence undervoltageThe protection picks up when the positive sequencecomponent Vd of a three-phase voltage system dropsbelow the Vsd set point with:
c it includes a definite time delay T,c it allows drops in motor electrical torque to bedetected.
Phase rotation directionThis protection also allows the phase rotationdirection to be detected.
The protection considers that the phase rotationdirection is inverse when the positive sequencevoltage is less than 10% of Unp and when the phase-to-phase voltage is greater than 80% of Unp.

Temperature monitoring
OperationThis protection is associated with an RTD of thePt100 platinum (100 Ω at 0°C) or (nickel 100 Ω,nickel 120 Ω) type in accordance with the IEC 60751and DIN 43760 standards.
c It picks up when the monitored temperature isgreater than the Ts set point.c It has two independent set points:v alarm set point,v tripping set point.
c When the protection is activated, it detects whetherthe RTD is shorted or disconnected:v RTD shorting is detected if the measuredtemperature is less than –35°C (measurementdisplayed “****”),v RTD disconnection is detected if the measuredtemperature is greater than +205°C (measurementdisplayed “-****”).If an RTD fault is detected, the set point output relaysare inhibited: the protection outputs are set to zero. The "RTD fault" item is also made available in thecontrol matrix and an alarm message is generated.

Recloser
Recloser initializationThe recloser is ready to operate if all of the following conditions are met:c "circuit breaker control" function activated and recloser in service,c circuit breaker closed,c inhibition time delay not running,c none of the recloser inhibition conditions is true (see below).
Cyclesc Case of a cleared fault:v if, after a reclosing order, the fault does not appear after the disengaging timedelay has expired, the recloser reinitializes and a message appears on the display(cf. example 1).
c Case of a permanent fault, not cleared:v after the instantaneous or time-delayed protection has tripped, the isolation timedelay associated with the first active cycle starts up. When it runs out, a closingorder is given and this order starts up the disengagement time delay. If the protection detects the fault before the end of the time delay, a trip order isgiven and the next reclosing cycle is activated,v if the fault persists after all the active cycles have taken place, a permanent triporder is given, a message appears on the display and closing is inhibited until theuser has acknowledged the fault, according to the protection parameter setting.
c Closing on a faultIf the circuit breaker closes when the fault occurs, or if the fault appears beforethe end of the inhibition time delay, the recloser is inhibited.
Recloser inhibition conditionsThe recloser is inhibited according to the following conditions:c close or trip command,c recloser disabled,c receipt of an inhibition order on inhibition input I26,c appearance of a fault related to the switchgear, such as trip circuit or control fault,c receipt of an external tripping order via inputs I21, I22 or I23.

Protection functions (cont’d)
IDMT protectionsThe operation time depends on the protected variable(phase current, earth fault current, …).
Operation is represented by a characteristic curve:c t = f(I) curve for the phase overcurrent function,c t = f(Io) for the earth fault function.
The rest of the document is based on t = f(I),but the reasoning can be extended to other variablessuch as Io, …
The curve is defined by:c type (standard inverse, very inverse, extremelyinverse..),c Is current setting which corresponds to the verticalasymptote of the curve,c T time delay setting which corresponds to theoperation time for I = 10 Is.
The 3 settings are made in the following chronologicalorder: type, Is current, T time delay.
Changing the T time delay setting by x% changes allof the operation times in the curve by x%.
Examples of problems to be solved
Problem 1Knowing the type of IDMT, determine the Is currentand T time delay settings.
Theoretically, Is current is set to the maximum currentthat can be continuous:it is generally the rated current of the protectedequipment (cable, transformer).
T time delay is set to the operation point at 10 Is onthe curve. This setting is determined taking intoaccount the discrimination constraints with respect tothe upstream and downstream protection devices.
The discrimination constraint leads to the definition ofa point A on the operation curve (IA, tA), e.g. the pointthat corresponds to the maximum fault currentaffecting the downstream protection.
Problem 2Knowing the type of IDMT, the Is current setting anda point k (Ik, tk) on the operation curve, determinethe T time delay setting.
On the standard curve of the same type, read theoperation time tsk that corresponds to the relativecurrent:

Each control and monitoring function requiresseparate parameter setting and appropriate wiring. Therefore, not all of the functions are available at thesame time.
e.g. when the logic discrimination function is used, the switching of settings groups function may not beused.
Trip circuit supervision and matchingThis monitoring function is intended for trip circuits:
c Shunt-trip coil circuits.
The function detects:v circuit continuity,v loss of power supply,v position contact discrepancy.
The function inhibits closing ofthe breaking device.Output relay testing
This function is activated via the SFT 2841(1) andcontrols each output relay (2) individually. The relaychanges status for a period of 5 s. This function isespecially useful in the commissioning and faulttracking phases.(1) or via advanced UMI.(2) except for O4 is the output is declared as “watchdog”.
DiscrepancyThis function is used to detect a discrepancy betweenthe last remote control order received and the actualposition of the circuit breaker.
The data may be accessed via the TS42 remoteindication.

Control and monitoring functions (cont’d)
Logic discrimination
UseThis function is used to obtain:c full tripping discrimination,c a substantial reduction in delayed tripping of thecircuit breakers located nearest to the source(drawback of the classical time-based discriminationfunction).
The system applies to the definite time (DT) andIDMT (standard inverse time SIT, very inverse timeVIT, extremely inverse time EIT and ultra inverse timeUIT) phase overcurrent and earth fault protections.
With this type of system, the time delays should be set with respect to the elementto be protected without considering the discrimination aspect.
Operating principle
(*) Motor Sepams do not involve the receipt of blocking input orders since they are intendedfor loads only.(1) parameter setting by default.(2) according to parameter setting and presence of an additional MES 108 or 114 module.

When a fault occurs in a radial network, the fault current flows through the circuitbetween the source and the location of the fault:c the protection devices upstream from the fault are triggered,c the protection devices downstream from the fault are not triggered,c only the first protection device upstream from the fault should trip.
Each Sepam is capable of transmitting and receiving blocking input orders exceptfor motor* Sepams which can only transmit blocking input orders. When a Sepam is triggered by a fault current:c it transmits a blocking input order from output O3 (1),c it trips the associated circuit breaker if it does not receive a blocking input orderon input I13 (2).
Transmission of the blocking input lasts for the time required to clear the fault. It isinterrupted after a time delay that takes into account the breaking device operationtime and the protection reset time.
This system makes it possible to minimize the duration of the fault, optimizediscrimination and guarantee safety in downgraded situations (wiring or switchgearfailures).
