Overall Goal Determine the projects success in bringing
together scientists and educators to improve ocean science
education, teaching of the process of science, and enhancing
students identification with and as scientists. Scientists Science

How: Student Study Goals What? When? Why? Pre-surveyEarly Fall
2014 (before teaching the first lesson) To establish baseline of
engagement in science, understanding of process of science, and
interest in project. Pre-Personal Meaning Map Early Fall 2014 (same
time as pre-survey) To establish baseline of perception of and
identification with scientists. Post-surveyLate April 2015 (after
Student Research Symposium) To determine potential adjustments to
engagement in science and understanding of process of science. And
to let students share their opinions about the project.
Post-PMMLate April 2015 (same time as post-survey) To allow
students to add, subtract, or adjust PMM to reflect potential
adjusted perception of and identification with scientists.

Notes about student evaluation You need to assign each student
a number (that they use all year). Their letter-number code = your
letter + their number Do not send us any information about which
student is assigned which number. Please send us pre-surveys in
addressed envelope (do not put your name or school on the
envelope). Hold onto the PMMs for the year. They will need to
revisit them during the post-survey in late April.

How: Teacher Study Goals What? When? Why? Pre-survey and PMM Aug
18, 2014To learn background information about your teaching setting
and approach. Post-Teacher Workshop and PMM Aug 22, 2014To assess
weeks training effectiveness and your needs related to the project.
Post-Lesson survey Late Fall 2014To learn about the impact of the
lessons on the students engagement in and understanding of science.
Post-Live Call survey Late January 2015 To learn about impact of
live call on students engagement in and identification with
science. Post-Science Blog survey Mid-February 2015 To learn about
impact of science blog on students engagement in and understanding
of process of science. Post-SRSLate April 2015To learn about impact
of SRS on students engagement in and identification with science.
Post-Project Exit Survey and PMM June 2015To learn of potential
adjustments to teaching approach and your opinions about the
project overall.

Notes about teacher evaluations Use your letter code on all
surveys. Try not to include school or city name in responses. All
surveys will be done via Qualtrics online, expect PMM in the exit
survey. It will be provided to you with a return envelope at the
Student Research Symposium.
