WORSHIP WITH US!
Notes from the Cantor
“The world endures only by the breath of the school children” – Babylonian Talmud Shabbat 119B Jewish Science Camp, Mitzvah Corps in Israel, teen bike riding adventures, increased Reform presence at colleges, and more: delegates at the 2013 URJ Biennial in San Diego learned about many exciting innovations created by the Campaign for Youth Engagement. As a member congregation of the URJ, PTBAS certainly contributes to these new ways to reach young people, but without a religious school, we need to think out of the box for PTBAS to have a “hands-on” influence on the younger generation.
During the month of January, our congregation will be mentoring a special young guest, first year Oberlin student, Sara Tolchinsky, as she explores what it would be like to be a cantor. Sara grew up in Larchmont, NY where she enjoyed acting in the Play Group Theater and singing in HaZamir, the international Jewish high school choir. She will be coming to temple on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to study with me, plan and rehearse for Shabbat services. Sara and my daughter Miryam will also be offering a Wednesday workshop in the social hall on “Story through Movement” on January 8 and 15 at 1:00 PM.
The first service Sara will sing in will be, most appropriately, on Shabbat Shirah, the “Sabbath of Song” which is Friday evening, January 10, in the social hall. Indeed, January will be an especially musical month. Sara will join us to sing Tu BiSh’vat songs at our seder on January 11. Anthony Turner, Sara and I will present a sermon in song on January 17, the Shabbat before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day. As a capstone to her time with us, Sara will present an afternoon musicale in the social hall at 4:00 PM on Sunday, January 26. The musicale will feature some special guests, including our own Maxine Feldman (another Oberlin grad, as you know) and is free of charge, with a suggested donation to the Jonah Maccabee Foundation, which helps young people build whole, healthy lives. The foundation is named for Jonah Dreskin, son of Cantor Ellen Dreskin, one of my classmates from HUC, and Rabbi Billy Dreskin, who wrote the Potato Latke Recipe song we sang at Chanukah. Jonah, like Sara, was an enthusiastic member of the Play Group Theater. Tragically, he died in his first year in college. We will be learning more about the work of the foundation at the musicale, and if you have web access, I encourage you to look at the website: www.jonahmac.org. To continue our own PTBAS mini-campaign for youth engagement, on Friday evening, January 31, we will have another special guest, Melanie Girshick. Melanie is a Certified Sign Language Interpreter and is currently working towards a Masters in Jewish Studies. She will tell us about her experience in Israel as an ASL Interpreter helping to provide equal access linguistically and culturally for deaf Jewish Americans visiting Israel for the first time on Birthright. Let’s do our part in January to engage the next generation as we thank Melanie for her work in tikkun olam and we encourage Sara to be “a sweet singer in Israel.”

President’s Message
2014! Another (secular) year come and gone….
And here we are! With a brand new year’s worth of activities and events awaiting us. With any luck this is going to be a better and more exciting year than we’ve ever had. While a number of congregants have run away for the winter to warmer climates, there are still plenty of us around to have a good time.
And while it’s sometimes cold and dismal outside in January, a good way to beat the winter doldrums is to snuggle up with the new Temple cookbook and pick out one of the many great recipes to make. There’s nothing like the smell of a great meal cooking in the kitchen to banish the winter blues.
Enjoy!

Brotherhood
We would like to thank all the people who made the Brotherhood Shabbat on December 20 possible. Thank you, Sam Silverman and Milton Platt, for putting it together, and thank you, Cantor Bernstein, for your participation and not laughing out loud when we goofed up.
A special thanks to all our Brotherhood members who participated in the service; Sam, your sense of humor is amazing. A special thanks to Myron and Mona and all those who helped in providing such a delightful Oneg.
We really appreciate all the people who attended the service and did not express any displeasure in any way.
I know everyone felt the same way I did at the end of the service. Thank G-d this only happens once a year!
We are not finished providing great events:
Sunday, January 12, 10:15 AM
Following our stimulating business meeting scheduled for 9:30 AM or whenever enough Brotherhood members show up, our own Corey Polk will do a stimulating talk on how you can make your investments work to your advantage. We can certainly use a few more millionaires in our temple!
Other dates to keep in mind:
Sunday, February 9, 10:15 AM
A wonderful bittersweet movie about a Jewish astronaut’s attempt to bring a special torah into outer space. I promise you will not be sorry if you attend this showing. Popcorn will be served.
Sunday, March 30, 12:30-4:30 PM
Brotherhood Luncheon honoring our own Angel at Rex Manor. Please get your reservations in ASAP. Warning: The room at Rex Manor can hold no more than 175 people. Don't take a chance at getting closed out.

January 5 The WPTBAS Game Afternoon
February 2 View a comedy film
March 24 An evening of poetry readings
April 20 Our Annual Seder (men are invited)
May 4 A shared program with Brotherhood

Rabbinate opens kashrut supervision to women
Jewish Voices Together December 3, 2013
Decision comes after long struggle by the Emunah religious women’s organization, which ended at the High Court of Justice.
Startling development from Israel: Despite strong opposition -- women *might* be able to qualify as kashrut supervisors/mashgichot. Imagine -- women knowing the laws of kashrut!
Israel’s Chief Rabbinate has promised to remove the obstacles preventing women from working as supervisors in the state kosher certification system, following a battle waged by the Emunah religious women’s organization.
In a response to the High Court of Justice, which was hearing a petition from Emunah, the rabbinate and the Ministry of Religious Services stated that from now on women will be allowed to take the rabbinate’s professional exam on the laws of kashrut and to receive certification if they pass. The decision was made despite the vehement opposition of several members of the Chief Rabbinate Council, who claimed that “women cannot serve as kashrut supervisors.”
Show your support for progressive Judaism in Israel by becoming a member of ARZA. Of the $36.00 in annual dues $2.00 will stay at PTBAS, for Israel-related programming, and the balance we will sent directly to ARZA.

First of all, I would like to report that we had an excellent turnout for our trip to the Eldridge Street Synagogue for the Turkish/Eastern European Jewish concert. The building has been beautifully restored and the concert was great. Afterwards, some of us went to 5 Mott Street for a kosher vegetarian Chinese meal. Reviews were mixed but mostly positive.
January appears to be notable for Jewish films. On January 26th, Kane Street Synagogue plans to show an Israeli movie (to be announced). Movies will also be presented every Tuesday evening at the JCC in Manhattan at 7:30 p.m. Plots include a Communist investigation of “Zionist crime” in 1950’s Prague, and a man hidden by a childless couple on their farm during the Holocaust, in return for fathering their child.
Don’t forget the new Chagall exhibit at the Jewish Museum.

I can't believe that the secular New Year is upon us. The first event of 2014 will be our annual Tu BiSh’vat Seder. It will be held on Saturday, January 11, directly after services which begin at 10:30 AM. Fruits of the season will be served, as well as a light dairy lunch. The fee for this will be $5.00 for Temple members and $8.00 for non-members. This event will end approximately at 2:45 PM for those using Access-A-Ride.
Reservations are required by January 6, and there are flyers in the rear of the social hall. Please join us for this event, and have a Happy and Healthy Secular New Year.
