Step1:Teacherintroducestopicbyaskingstudentstobrainstormwhatismeantbytheterm‘qualityoflife’.Studentresponsesarewrittenonboardundertheheading‘IndicatorsofQualityofLife’–forexample:income,housing,education,numberofdoctorsandinternetconnection.

Step2:StudentsareintroducedtoGapminder.TheteacherdisplaysthemainindicatorsforAustralia.StudentsundertakefreeexplorationofGapminder(play)togenerateinterestinlifeinAsiancountriesusingindicators,trackingonecountryovertimeandcomparingcountries.Alternativesoftware:https://mapmaker.nationalgeographic.orgusingeconomiclayers.

Step3:StudentsselecttwocountriesinAsiaandrecordtheindicatorsforthatcountryincludingincome,housing,literacy,numberofdoctorsandinternetconnectiononWorksheet1.
