The Rutgers University Police Department works in close partnership with the Camden Police Department, the Delaware River Port Authority, and the security forces of our neighbors through the Camden Corporation Watch to ensure students’ safety on and off campus.
Commissioned uniformed police officers and security officers patrol the campus and its neighborhood in cars, on foot, and on bicycles 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

1766 Chartered as Queen’s College in New Brunswick, the nation’s eighth institution of higher learning, Rutgers is one of only nine colonial colleges established before the American Revolution.
1825 Queen’s College becomes Rutgers College to honor trustee and Revolu-tionary War veteran Colonel Henry Rutgers.
1864 The state legislature chooses Rutgers to be the state land-grant college.
1926 South Jersey Law School founded in Camden.
1927 College of South Jersey founded in Camden.
1945 Rutgers is declared the state university of New Jersey by the state legislature.
1950 South Jersey Law School and College of South Jersey merge with Rutgers University to form the Camden Campus.
1968 Rutgers School of Law–Camden granted autonomy from its Newark counterpart.
1981 The Graduate School–Camden founded.
1989 Rutgers joins the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the top 62 research universities in North America. Rutgers School of Business–Camden founded.
1995 Rutgers School of Business–Camden becomes the first southern New Jersey institution to earn accreditation from the AACSB International.
2001 Campbell’s Field, home to the professional minor league Camden River-sharks and the Rutgers–Cam-den Scarlet Raptors baseball teams, opens.
2006 Women’s softball at Rutgers–Camden wins the NCAA Division III National Championship Title and becomes the first Rutgers team to win an NCAA title in more than 60 years.
