OPT ICAL CABLING INNOVAT IONS
MDP (Micro Data Center Plenum) indoorcables are designed specifically to enablehigh density backbone connectivity in existing or new data centers. These ruggedcables are available in fiber counts from fourto 288 optical fibers. This design offers dramatically reduced cable diameters of upto 50% over typical indoor/outdoor andpremises distribution style cable offerings. These cables, when pre-terminated usingindustry standard MPO (MTP®)* multi-fiberoptical connectors, provide the highest density, most flexible backbone connectivitysolution available for data centers and SAN installations.
Adventum is not just for outdoor orindoor/outdoor applications. With Berk-Tek’spre-terminated multi-fiber cable line you cannow take advantage of Adventum in indoorLAN and SAN installation environments. In

Berk-Tek’s family of 50 micron GIGAlite fibers offers considerably improved link loss budgets over the current industry minimum standards compliant fibers. By utilizing superior Differential Mode Delay (DMD) performance inherent to the fiber and cable manufacturing process, minimal Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) loss is attained and can be allocated to significantly increased link loss budgets as shown in the chart below. This added budget can be used to achieve longer distances or to increase the number of connector pairs in the link.

OPTICAL FIBER TYPES CONNECTOR TYPES
Refer to the inside back cover for a broader listing of the various available connectivity options.
Radius of Curvature—The end-face of theconnector is given a specific radius duringthe polishing process. This radius providesthe basis for ensuring that both fibers make contact. Both the apex offset and the fiber heights are dependent on theradius of curvature being within the predetermined parameters.
Fiber Height—Physical contact of the fiberis necessary for proper light transfer. Theend-face geometry has strict fiber protrusionlimits, as well as fiber undercut limits. These limits are based exclusively on the mathematical calculation of the radius ofcurvature. If the fiber is too low, the physical contact may never occur, causingincreased attenuation and reflectance.
Apex Offset—Physical contact connectorsfeature a radius on the end-face. The peakof the radius is known as the apex. The relationship from the apex to the “perfect”center of the ferrule, is known as the apexoffset. Strict control of this specification ismandatory in order to precisely control thedistance of each fiber from the surface ofthe connector and to ensure physical contact upon mating.

Surface Defects—Visual defects are one ofthe most common causes of latent failures.Scratches, pits and chips in the ferrule end-face can change over time, becoming morepronounced and migrating to critical areasof the fiber core, thus affecting performance. They are also prime sources of deposits ofdust, moisture and other contaminants.
UNIQUE TO EVERY APPLICATION
Producing high-quality, reliable pre-terminatedcable assemblies, means addressing manyspecific physical characteristics of the cableand connections. These issues, thoroughlyoutlined in TIA/EIA, IEC and Telcordia standards, include acceptable parameters forIntermateability, Insertion Loss (IL), ReturnLoss (RL), Radius of Curvature, Apex Offsetand Fiber Height. Other issues that influencelong-term reliability are Ferrule/Fiber Fit,Ferrule Concentricity and Ferrule SurfaceDefects.
Berk-Tek ensures that all of the key physicalcharacteristics outlined below are eitherremoved through the selection of qualitycomponents or held to strict tolerances inour controlled manufacturing facilities, something that is much more difficult toachieve in a field installation setting.
Misalignment—Fiber Core Alignment is critical to a terminated cable’s ability totransmit light. Main causes of misalignmentare typical mechanical issues associatedwith low quality connectors or fiber: ferruleconcentricity, hole tolerances, fiber eccentricity and variations in core diameter.
