Pre-Enrolment meeting between Programme Managers and
Students:
Year 2
School of Earth & Environment
Learning outcomes These change between years 2 and 3!
Year 2: • Detailed studies of geology: application of other scientific disciplines where
appropriate. • Application of geological information to situations outside the context of
original study.• Learn to critically evaluate the methods used to generate primary data and
the interpretation of those data.
Year 3: • Demands coherent and detailed subject knowledge.• Exhibit professional competencies, some of which will be informed by
recent research/scholarship in the discipline.• Develop and sustain arguments based on conceptual understanding
drawing upon scholarly reviews and primary sources.• Appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in the
discipline.

Pathways within the GS programme
What are pathways? Coherent groupings of modules chosen to give you the best
preparation for particular branches of geology
Who says they are the best portfolios? Colleagues in industry who will be in a position to employ you
Pathways within the GS programme• 'Geology pathway' provides candidates with the opportunity to undertake
a broad and balanced programme of study that provides general coverage of all of the key areas within the discipline.
'Petroleum pathway' provides training in exploration geophysics, sedimentology, structural geology, and resource geology; it is recommended for candidates intending to pursue a career in the hydrocarbons industry.
'Minerals pathway' provides a background in ore geology, mineral exploration and structural geology; it is recommended for candidates intending to pursue a career in the extractive (mineral exploration/quarrying/ mining) industry.
• Regardless of which track is followed, successful completion of the programme (which is accredited by the Geological Society) will lead to the degree qualification of BSc Geological Sciences. Nothing different on transcript BUT V. useful on CV, and for references
• Register for Pathways at the School Office- see Luisa
Is the geology pathway ‘non vocational’?
NO!!

EXIT POINTS
Leeds: Msc Structural/Mining
P/G study elsewhere (inc. overseas)
A route through the degree programme designed to prepare graduates for employment in the mining and minerals sector
Industry
Major or minor companies, jobs worldwide
Major companies: Australia, Pacific Rim, S. America
New for 2011UK, Canada, Australia
Choices on the minerals pathway:
Are designed to give a portfolio which gives you the best
platform in the international jobs market
BUT one area where we lag behind overseas Universities is in the ability to get you industrial experience/exposure. You can solve this up to a point by joining:
SEG field trip to Cononish Gold Mine
Leeds Chapter of The Society of Economic Geology (SEG)
Field trips over and above those in the curricula
Tim Livesey Barrick Gold
SEG has a programme of speakers from industry
After Leeds
Our graduates are working in: Australia: coal, diamond and iron ore mining, gold exploration Africa and Canada: gold exploration
Contacts with industry are already strong and continually increasing. These will continue to enhance the employability of Leeds graduates.
The bourgeoning activities of the SEG chapter will establish further contacts through fieldtrips, speakers and contacts made by alumni.
The SEG Chapter ‘Industrial advisor’ plays a key role in advising students on the current opportunities.

The Petroleum PathwayA route through the degree programme designed to
prepare graduates for employment in the petroleum and hydrocarbon industry
School of Earth and EnvironmentFACULTY OF ENVIRONMENT
What is the Petroleum Pathway?
• Gives specific knowledge related to the petroleum and hydrocarbon industry
• Focuses on the most relevant subjects:• Structural geology• Geophysics• Sedimentology• Petroleum Geoscience
• Gives great preparation for a career in the petroleum industry or postgraduate study in related subjects
School of Earth and EnvironmentFACULTY OF ENVIRONMENT
Why take the Petroleum Pathway?
• Hydrocarbon extraction will be an important part of the global economy for at least the next 50 years
• Oil and gas is more environmentally friendly than coal which is the alternative bridging energy
• Starting salaries in the UK are ~ £35k (with MSc)• Starting salaries in the USA are ~ $125k (with MSc)

Industry Links• BP has donated $1.1million to the University in Scholarship awards –
more details on the website (http://www.leeds.ac.uk/ace/PS/BP.html)
• We have close links with Major and National Oil Companies who support both Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses (e.g. BP, Shell, HESS and service companies such as Schlumberger)
• Access to Petroleum Industry recruitment talks – company representatives visit Leeds and hold initial interviews here
• Careers fair – held annually in Leeds, 2011 event sponsored by BP
• A number of National Oil Companies (including Saudi Aramco, Qatar Petroleum and Petroleum Development Oman) sponsor students through our Undergraduate courses as they feel we provide quality training for direct entry into their business

Life after your degree...
First question:
Are you interested in one of the specialised pathways?
How do I choose my modules?
Minerals
3600 Ore deposits3450 Structural Either 3102 Isotope Geochem Or 3460 High-Temp Processes
Recommend 4th as the option
Petroleum:Must choose 3500 basin dynamics and pet. Systems from core modulesAnd :
3060: Advanced Sedimentology3450: Structural3630: Strategic Energy Issues
+ Exploration Seismics if not already taken
Second question
Are you thinking about an MSc course after your degree? Option Modules give you the chance to prepare for a particular type of postgraduate course.
If you are interested in an MSc course in Leeds: speak to the MSc programme convenor.
You need to check your proposed timetable: Core and options will not clash but individual option modules might clash with each other.
‘Special’ Modules
Geology Into Schools (10 credits, Sem 1 & 2) – Introduction to secondary school teaching, focussing
on geology.– 20 hours spent in a school working directly with
teachers & delivering material you have designed. – Limited places; if interested see/e mail Phil Murphy.– A good chance to find out if teaching is for you.– Builds contacts with local/regional schools who run
geology courses.– Expect to undertake some travel but the costs will be
reimbursed.
Ore Deposits & their Exploitation (Sem 1, 10 credits) – Developed in response to current worldwide shortage of exploration and
mine geologists.
– Reinforces practical skills of mineral/mineral assemblage identification in hand specimen and thin section.
– Relationship between the mineralogy of the ore and ore processing.
– Detailed study of selected mineral commodities: gold, Cu, Fe Pb/Zn.
– Trip to Navan Pb/Zn Mine, Tara (nr Dublin), including underground visit.
– Cost for trip: in region of £120.
– LIMITED PLACES (15): YOU NEED TO APPLY TO DO THIS COURSE
– Priority given to minerals track students
– Get a form after this meeting: hand in to the office by Friday May 13
‘Special’ Modules
High Temperature Processes
• Not obvious from the title what is involved!• Research- lead module- low contact hours but a lot of
private study.• You choose one of the topics on offer: (some run by Dan
M. some by Rob C. some a mixture) magma chambers, metamorphic processes, evolution of ore deposits.
• Some restrictions on projects IF you have taken 3600 BUT ores related options available for all
• The module involves some practical work to generate your own data.
• Good experience of research• Good for the c.v.
Who do I ask about choice of modules/pathways ?
• For minerals pathway: Rob Chapman• For Petroleum pathway : Graham McLeod
We may send you off to talk to specific module convenors if we don’t have the necessary detailed information to answer your query.

Feedback has been a major L&T theme for 2011, where we aimed to raise the profile of provision of feedback amongst staff and encourage students to engage with feedback accordingly. In order to get the most from feedback, bear in mind the following:
• Anticipate and actively look for all forms of feedback• Engage fully with all feedback that you receive• Engage with all coursework and feedback, whether
assessed for marks or not.• Ask for help if do not understand the feedback you receive,
and ask for more feedback if you feel you aren’t getting enough
Feedback is your main route to improvement, so don’t miss out!!
