Hon’ble Chancellor visits Bangalore Campus
The Founder Chancellor of Symbiosis International
University Padma Bhushan Prof Dr S B Mujumdar,
visited our Campus on April 19. The faculty and staff had
the privilege of listening to Dr Mujumdar‘s address and
interacting with him. In his interaction with faculty and
staff Dr Mujumdar shared the genesis of Symbiosis
which was envisaged by him over four decades ago. His
clarity of vision and his purpose of determination has
made the Group reach the glorifying heights that it is at
today.
While narrating his real life experience at Fergusson
College, he said that it was then that he realized the
difficulties faced by foreign students, particularly those
from Afro Asian countries, studying in Pune. And so
inspired by the ideals of Viswa Bharati of Gurudev Tagore and 'Antar Bharati' of Sane Guruji, and with the desire
of helping foreign students with a 'Home away from Home', in 1971 he established Symbiosis, which means
'living together of two different organisms for mutual benefit'. He said that the motto of Symbiosis ―Vasudhaiva
Kutumbakam" – ‗The world is one family‘ has been truly reflected and realized.
His motivational message was that every human ought to have intellect in mind, compassion in heart and
passion in belly to succeed in life. During this visit Dr Mujumdar also toured the entire Symbiosis Campus and
expressed his contentment over the fine maintenance of the Campus.
Visit of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor to Bangalore Campus Honourable Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Bhushan Patwardhan
visited SIMC-B on three different occasions.
During his visit he interacted with the staff and faculty. He
also toured the Campus. Every visit by him has been a
lesson in professionalism and focus on excellence.

Are We Really Growing? An Analysis of the Union Budget 2012-2013
In the midst of The Greece debt crisis
in Europe, political uncertainty in the
Middle-East, the great North-East
earth-quake in Japan, slowdown in
growth of the economy, deteriorating
fiscal conditions and political
turbulence; Union Finance
Minister Pranab Mukherjee
presented the Budget 2012-13.
The Union budget for 2012-
13 has largely been seen by
commentators as one that‘s
cautious and makes no
major game changing
propositions.
Disappointing a large
section of income tax payers
in the country, finance minister
Pranab Mukherjee made a small
raise of 20,000 in the exemption limit
for individual tax payers.
The budget opened the supermarket
sector to foreign giants bringing joy to
the lives of retailers. Though it made
luxury cars, eating out at restaurants
or hotel accommodation expensive it
failed to deliver on diesel subsidies.
At the same time it made life saving
drugs and iodine cheaper. The
budget was a heart-break for
environmentalists, but it did give
agriculturalists a reason to cheer.
Oil explorers such as ONGC, Oil
India and Cairn India might prove to
be the biggest losers of the budget. It
brought relief to some by fully
exempting basic customs duty on
import of fertilizer-making equipment
for 3 years, reducing excise duty on
matches manufactured by semi-
mechanised units by 4% and
increasing external commercial
borrowing but was harsh on
gold loan providers by
increasing the customs duty
on gold.
Instead of boosting local
manufacturing, the
budget proposed to raise
excise duty to 12 percent
from 10 percent which is likely
to hurt construction
companies and
infrastructure. Power utilities
are likely to benefit after the
budget proposed a 2-year exemption
on import duty for companies
importing thermal coal.
Agriculture continues to be a priority
for the Government. The outlay for
Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY)
is being increased from Rs. 7,680
crores in 2011-12 to Rs. 9,217 crores
in 2012-13. Another major point that
came across in this year‘s budget
was the provision of Rs. 1,93,407
crores for Defence Services which
include Rs. 79,579 crores for capital
expenditure.
It showered blessings on the
education sector by proposing an
increase in allocation by 21.7 % for
Right to Education - Sarva Shiksha
Abhiyan to Rs 25,555 crores and by
29 per cent for Rashtriya Madhyamik
Shiksha Abhiyan.
Fiscal deficit of 5.1% is being too
optimistic; because our country is
subsidy handicapped .The subsidies
projected by the government are
somehow dependent on the
dynamism of the international macro
economy factors.
The growth is not possible till we do
not deleverage, so that the Balance
of Payment is under control. As the
government‘s public borrowing is
increasing which can be a major
cause of instability and further
decrease the growth rate.
So now it is on the financial advisors
to decide that are we going for
meaningful deleveraging or are we
still subsidiary handicapped .The
budget does not really have
something that is directing us towards
growth , and also no hopes that the
next budget will carry something
beneficial as it is going to be the
populous budget.
Again as the tax slab has been
revised in favour of common men, so
it is still left on personal discretion to
take UNION BUDGET 2012 as
positive or else to be flat. And in
times to come the practical aspects of
it will unfold. (contd…)

interventions against gender violence and other
such oppressions. The team enacted various scenes
of oppression and violence on stage, after which
people from the audience were asked to be a part of
the drama by replacing any of the characters and
bringing a change into the situation.
The students of SIMC-B were immensely
enthusiastic to be a part of the performance and
brought to light various means of interventions that
could curtail the injustices happening in society.
Shadow Liberation‘s unconventional and

Film Review Moneyball Mints Magic
What is the relation between managerial skills and
sports? Why is appropriate management required to
get the right mix and talent, skill and
victory? ‗Moneyball‘ directed by Bennett
Miller gives the answers to all these
questions. Brad Pitt plays the main
character of Billy Beane.
The movie is about Billy Beane, the
General Manager of Oakland Athletics
Baseball team, leading his team to win 20
consecutive games. His team made an
American League record by winning 20
consecutive games.
The movie starts with the defeat of the
Oakland A‘s to the New York Yankees in
2001. Billy Beane is upset as it marks the
beginning of all the best players of the
team leaving. Billy tries to build an
efficient team but is unable to do so because of
shortage of funds. With the help ofa Yale Economics
graduate, Peter Brand, Billy comes up with a unique
method of selecting players based on their On Base
Percentage. Together they plan out the team and
select highly underrated players
who would not have been
selected otherwise.
The film is basically all about the
journey of the team after using
this unique selection method.
The film is interspersed with
Billy‘s flashbacks where he
ponders over his decision to
choose baseball over Stanford.
These scenes, according to me,
have been portrayed very well.
Also Billy‘s rapport with his
daughter has been shot very
sensitively.
The film is a wonderful combination of human
emotions, baseball statistics and the love one can
have for his team.

Innovations in Advertising
Advertising: A lot has been already written and spoken
about it. Now what makes advertising so special and
why should you read this? Hasn‘t advertising been
present with us for a long time now? What is being
done in the current market which helps the brand
break through the clutter and reach the audience?
Innovation in advertising is the key answer.
Commercial advertising as a broad category includes
wall paintings, street furniture components, printed
flyers and rack cards, banners, brochures, catalogs,
shopping carts, bus stop benches, human billboards,
sides of buses, taxicab doors, passenger screens,
trains, supermarkets, backs of event tickets and
11

receipts. Any place an ―identified‖ sponsor pays to
deliver their message through a medium is advertising.
There are a lot of innovations that are being carried
out in these mediums as the traditional mediums are
increasing facing ad clutter. A creative idea
implemented with an innovative medium with low
spending is the key advertisers and marketers are
using to unlock consumer‘s minds in these
recessionary times. A wall painting by a roadside is
commercial advertising; the same wall painting on a
six floored building constitutes innovation. The Indian
advertising scenario is growing and so is the potential
of the people employed within it. Innovations are done
to capture the audience based on the AIDA model that
is by attracting attention raising the interest, creating
desire and stimulating an action. Companies want to
catch their target audience when they least expect it.
This will help then to retain top of the mind recall
especially if the idea is executed creatively. Lastly,
creativity will never go unnoticed. It has and will
always be capable of amusing, entertaining and
leaving the audiences in awe!

Innovations In PR
In the advertising world, the right combination of
money and brainpower has meant the advent of
technologies that are helping CMOs, CEOs, and CFOs
better determine, with actual quantitative fact, how
effective their campaigns are. It's certainly where
companies are spending a lot of time and resources
these days.
In the past, influence on reputation was fairly easy to
pinpoint and it typically centered
on a set of journalists. The
effective PR professional could
manage influence through
strong media relationships and
a good set of messages aimed
directly at the target group. For
instance, one of the major
trends in PR and social media
has been the company-
customer interaction. Lately, the
rule has become the closer you are with the people
who buy your products, the better off you are. People
want businesses that are open and personable, not
cold grey buildings full of men in suits. Public relations
is ever evolving, and technology has a lot to do with
the changes that are happening
Be it in any field, the innovations in PR help the
company or the agency to sustain and thus have a
great reputation in the market. As a result, PR
practitioners need technologies that can help them
determine centres of influence and where attention
should be paid, much like algorithms help hedge fund
managers uncover good
investment strategies. The right
mix of capital and intellect can
make the difference. Smart,
nimble PR firms need financial
backing to help them innovate. At
the same time, the best PR firms
will invest in their people. This
approach will have enormous
and exciting implications for the
industry. Gone are the days of
mere press release and press conference. With advent
of technology, innovative PR is on the rise.

PRAD Technology/New Media
Freedom of Expression, Anyone?
It is a gargantuan task to monitor all the content that is
put on social networking sites. Mr Kapil Sibal however
feels differently. The Indian telecom minister has
appealed to popular social networking sites to form
their own guidelines to monitor the content on the
platforms to bring sync with the culture of the country.
This move in a way goes against the fundamental right
of the public to share and express what they feel.
Moreover, the decision that stems from the Information
Technology Act 2000 may actually never hold fort. It is
obvious in more ways than one that the Government is
not equipped with the technology to undergo and
sustain such an initiative.
The Government is well within its power to ban or
blacklist websites on the basis of noncompliance.
Serious backlash may come forth from the media
itself. The traffic on the sites, coupled with ever
increasing Ad sales could all be lost if the website fails
to maintain this Herculean task. Online business may
even shut down as the users may feel ‗watched‘.
It won‘t be long before the public discussions online
are pre-screened. With someone over your shoulder
all the time, it would be detrimental to the purpose if
one circumvents the law. Corruption will only be fed
further and no one stands to gain otherwise.
The very Democracy that we uphold may come under
the scanner. Knowledge is nothing if it is not coupled
with freedom and learning is redundant without
sharing. In a booming economy one needs to source
the right information, unedited. If everything that goes
up comes back down doctored then the nation remains
merely engineered.

PRAD Digest Steve Jobs: The Story of a Legend
Steve Jobs is a name that is
almost interchangeable with the
popular technological
organization Apple Inc. The co-
founder, chairman and Chief
Executive Officer died a sad
death on October 5th, 2011,
sending the world into mourning.
He was only 56 years old and he left behind a wife and
four children.
Steve Jobs has been associated with Apple Inc. since
1978 and ended his tenure there as the CEO in 2011.
He also founded NeXT Computers in 1985, and its
highlight was that Tim Green invented the World Wide
Web at CERN. NeXT was acquired by Apple Inc. 1997.
14
January – June, 2012
In 1986, he bought The Graphics Group, which later
became Pixar. When Disney and Pixar merged, he
became the largest stakeholder in Disney. He came
back to Apple Inc. when it bought NeXT.
In 2003, Jobs was diagnosed with a pancreas neuro-
endocrine tumor. Though it was initially treated, he
reported a hormone imbalance, underwent a liver tran
splant in 2009, and appeared progressively thinner as
his health declined. On medical leave for most of 2011,
Jobs resigned as Apple CEO in August that year and
was elected Chairman of the Board. He died of
respiratory arrest related to his metastatic tumor on
October 5, 2011. Memorials were conducted for this
legend outside all Apple stores across the world.

Oscar Glory
The glitz, the glamour, the fashion and let‘s not forget
the movie stars! There is only
one event in the world that
attracts the who‘s who of the
entertainment industry in
Hollywood, and the eyes of
those beyond. This year will go
down in history, as a silent film
has won Best Picture award for
the first time in 83 years. ‗The
Artist‘ is also the first French film
to win the Best Picture award at
the Oscars.
Held annually at the Hollywood
and Highland Centre in Los
Angeles, the Oscars is
something that movie
enthusiasts look forward to all
over the world. This year, the
ceremony took place on
February 28th, and the
nominations for the awards were announced on
January 24th.
Though there were big names like George Clooney
and Brad Pitt in the nominees for the Best Actor award,
it went to Jean Dujardin for his work in ‗The Artist‘.
Crowd favourite, Meryl Streep,
took home the award for Best
Actress, beating Glenn Close
and Michelle Williams to name
a few.
‗The Artist‘ took home another
coveted award with the Best
Director going to Michel
Hazanavicius. It took home
five awards in total, including
Original Score.
The Oscars, as usual, has
scandal attached to it, and this
year, it was a homosexual slur
uttered by the former producer
Brett Ratner. The host Eddie
Murphy also stepped down
with Ratner‘s resignation and
the new host Billy Crystal was
called in, marking his ninth time as the host. The event,
nonetheless, was a massive success.
