GAME RECAPUNION vs TIMBERS 1-3
LOSSApril 8
Philadelphia Union dropped a 3-1 home decision to Portland Timbers Saturday night at Talen Energy Stadium in front of a crowd of 15,437. The Union will continue their three-match homestand this coming Friday when they host NYCFC on ESPN.
The contest started with both clubs trading chances in the first 20 minutes. The Union had their best opportunity when CJ Sapong sent a nifty backheel pass to Fabinho in the box. Fabinho’s attempt was denied by Portland goalkeeper Jake Gleeson to keep the match scoreless.
Philadelphia struck first in the first half thanks to the aerial attack from Richie Marquez. After the Union were awarded a corner-kick, Philadelphia’s Haris Medunjanin sent in a ball that found the head of Marquez that snuck just inside the post to give Philadelphia the 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.
For Medunjanin, his assist was his second of the season. Medunjanin leads all of Major League Soccer in chances created with 16 after registering three tonight. Marquez’s goal was his first of the season and third of his career.
Portland found the equalizing goal in
the 32nd minute as Darlington Nagbe took a shot from beyond the 18. Nagbe sent a shot that crept through the legs of Marquez who attempted to deflect the shot. The attempt was just outside of the reach from 2016 Goalkeeper of the Year Andre Blake and found the back of the net to tie the match at one.
The match remained tied at one apiece after the first 45. Portland was able to grab the lead in the second half at the 66th minute mark after a restart. Diego Valeri sent a ball into the box and Portland’s Roy Miller got a slight touch on the ball which then deflected off of Marquez and inside the post to give Portland the 2-1 lead.
The Timbers were able to ice the match in the dying moments after earning a penalty kick in the 85th minute. Portland’s Darren Mattocks found possession of the ball behind the Union defense with just Blake to beat. Blake came out of the shadow of his net to make a defensive stop, but Blake got just enough of Mattocks’ foot and Portland was awarded the penalty kick.
After the dust settled, Portland’s Fanendo Adi stepped up to the penalty spot and recorded the Timbers third and final goal of the evening.

GAME PREVIEWUNION vs NYCFcApril 14
Philadelphia Union return to action this Friday when they take on Eastern Conference foe New York City FC at Talen Energy Stadium. This is the second of three consecutive home matches for the Union. Kick-off for this match is set for 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN with Adrian Healey, Taylor Twellman and Julie Stewart-Binks on the call.
This will be the first of two meetings between these two clubs in 2017. Philadelphia will travel to the Bronx to take on NYCFC at Yankee Stadium on June 3rd. The Union are deadlocked in their all-time serious record against NYCFC owning a 2-2-1 record. Philadelphia’s all-time record against NYCFC at Talen Energy Stadium is 2-1-0. The club’s last loss to NYCFC at home came on June 6, 2015.
Philadelphia currently sits in in 11th place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 0-3-2. The Union dropped their last match 3-1 to Portland Timbers last Saturday at Talen Energy Stadium. Defender Richie Marquez earned his first goal of the season in the match. Marquez has now scored more goals than any other center back for Philadelphia in the last two seasons.
A player to watch for Philadelphia is defender Keegan Rosenberry. The 2016 No. 3 overall pick for the Union has been a constant source of stability for his club since joining MLS. Rosenberry is expected to continue his iron man streak, Friday against New York City. Rosenberry has played in 39 consecutive MLS regular season matches, while playing every minute of his MLS career (3,510).
New York City FC enters Friday’s contest in a tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 2-2-1. A player to watch for New York City is their star playmaker David Villa. The Spanish sensation leads the club in goals scored with three and assists with three also. NYCFC is managed by Patrick Vieira, who took over the managerial duties on Jan. 1 2016. During his playing days, Viera lifted five FA Cups and nine league titles while earning 107 caps for France including winning performances in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and 2000 UEFA European Championships.
