INTRODUCTION
The Workplace Guide ensures that the learner gains the necessary exposure and experience
on various aspects and demands of the working environment of the Tourist guide. In the
Basics of guiding it focuses on the tasks that the Culture Site Guide needs to complete e.g.
research, design and conducting tours on a prominent tourist site/s. Other important skills that
are acquired include working with other people in a team, communication and following the
correct health and safety, legal and protocol procedures relevant to the area of operation.
This is also applicable to all Provincial Guides who are often required to conduct walking tours
on sites as part of a coach / driving tour.

SIZE AND COMPLEXITY OF THE SITE.
Design a Standard Tour / Highlight Tour featuring the major attractions and interesting

Write / type a pre-departure briefing (including Welcome, Introductions, Preparing the
participants for the activity and operational *procedures - as applicable).
*Procedures include but are not limited to site specific procedures, traditional protocol, and
municipal by laws and other restrictive procedures, rules and regulations, safety and security
requirements and any other procedural aspects impacting on the guiding experience.
Use Sections 1-2 of the Observation Checklist 11 (Task 11) as your guideline to write your
script. You will be evaluated against all of these outcomes (as applicable to the site).
1. The write up should be full sentences (in other words your whole speech /
presentation, word for word / essay form). You will only compile your cue cards once
you have prepared your written presentation).
2. Check your written speech for spelling and grammar.
3. Look up synonyms for words e.g. nice – ‘good’, ‘enjoyable’, ‘beautiful’.
4. Ask a person with appropriate knowledge of presentations and the language to assist
you when you get stuck.

5. PREPARE A WRITTEN PRESENTATION ON SITE (SPEECH)

Your presentation (based on the Central topic) should comprise of the following:
Introduction – This does not include the ‘Welcome’ and ‘Activity / Tour briefing’
(see 4). The introduction creates the stage for your presentation and helps
participants to understand and enjoy the visit to the site more. You should
provide sufficient information and background to the site. Place it in the
context of South African history (or World as applicable) and/or briefly relate
the history / events that led to the establishment of site / to which the features /
objects / exhibits / artefacts relate to. Participants also should be briefed on
terminology applicable to the site (for example explaining what ‘Voortrekker’
or ‘kraal’mean. The introduction can also be provided at a building /
monument / any other feature that explains the above best. If there are other
features / objects that explain the background to site, the introduction can
take place at several locations. A map or scale model of the site can also
serve as part of the orientation of a group.
Body (Main talk / interpretation)
This is the section where you talk about the different features / objects / exhibits
/demonstrations / activities while the participants can view it. Select the most
interesting information that relates to your TOPIC (and exhibits / features, etc.)
The physical layout of a site may not always be in an ideal order, but you
could apply the following techniques to ensure that there is a logical flow of
information:
- Make mention of a specific feature / object that relates to what you
are explaining and viewing now and point it out when you come to it
later on the tour…”Here is the ……. I was telling you about earlier on”.
- If you did not mentioned it before but it pertains to a previous section
you could link it by saying “Here is yet another example of what we
have previously seen….” Or “This explains what I have been telling you
before…”.

The video camera should be running from the beginning right to the
end of the tour without switching it off! The objective is not to produce
a professional video but to obtain evidence of the full presentation /
time of the tour 45-60minutes). Take note of your own safety while
walking from point A to B while video-taping the learner Guide. BUT,
ultimately the Assessor should be able to hear all the comments and
safety precautions of the learner Guide on the video when assessing
the learner Guide.

Find a good angle from where you can pan easily from learner to
participants and also include the background against which
