Well, what a month! Its been a hectic time, certainly on these shores as arguably 2 o the biggest minishows in Europe took place in quick succession, Golden Demon and Euro Militaire. Both events sawWamp members in attendance and even grabbing a ew awards which is always great.Attending Golden Demon allowed me the chance to make some new riends and meet up with Wampmembers some or the rst time which was antastic.Te site is growing at an astonishing rate at the moment but it still retains its warm and riendlyatmosphere. Tis was epitomised in the latest sponsored contest we did or Redbox Games. It was aantastic contest with the toughest eld o entries we have yet seen on the site - 27 antastic pieces ominiature art. It was tough to narrow it down to three winners but we did and they won themselves
some great prizes, but then came the great bit. One by one our 3 winners declared that they all hadplenty o Redbox minis already and so to give their prizes to someone else so 4th place got 1st, 5th gotthe runner up prize and so on - even one o the second batch o winners gave away their prize. It wasbrilliant and it just summed up Wamp perectly - it was more about the painting than the competition.o top it all o re Manor, the man behind Redbox decided to award everyone that entered a ree minijust or taking part. Great news then that we will be holding another Redbox Games contest next year.
Tis month was also a bit o a milestone or Wamp as we reached 500 members, we must be doingsomething right!! Probably all the great contests we keep having, right now we have a Pulp City contestrunning until the end o the month with some antastic prizes up or grabs then also under-way is ourKingdom Death contest. First prize is one o every new Kingdom Death release or the next 12 months- how sweet is that?!! Even more amazing is the act that everyone that enters the contest will receive$25 credit rom Kingdom Death - thats like getting a ree mini just or entering!!
Tose two contests will be the last o our usual sponsored contest or the year but the year end will seea bigger contest eaturing multiple sponsors and the chance to enter any mini rom any manuactureryou can think o!! Now is the time o year when I start planning next years contests and we have somegreat sponsors lined up - some returning or their 2nd or even 3rd year - others brand new (some sonew they havent even ofcially launched yet!
Wamp as you probably know eatures reviews o hobby related products but was itsel on the receivingend o a review by Hinton, the man behind Angry Geek Moments - I was pretty chued when he ratedus at 9.5/10 !!
So all in all its been a hectic month and thats not even mentioning the new radepost I have justlaunched (more about that on a later page) Its going to be a tough month to beat Hopeully this issueo Portal will kick things o in style!
Tanks

Gigantic Miniatures mission is to produce large scale antasy gures or thepainter and the collector.
As a lielong an o antasy models and miniatures I want to be able to distill theparticular style I have created in some o my competition models and transerit into my own designs. Taking cues rom miniature table top gaming and roleplaying gures I want to apply classic, iconic characters and monsters to largerscale model gures to urther explore the detail and character.
Gigantic Miniatures is a one man operation and has been started with theintention o taking the leap rom gure sculptor and model maker to designingmy own model gures. I love creating designs and imagery rom scratch andhope that through Gigantic Miniatures I can positively contribute to the vastworld o model gures.
Chris Clayton
Okay - time to reveal a little about thenew range weve been working on! Wehave quite a lot to talk about with thisproject, but Im going to start slow andjust show one o the initial miniatures -and its a amiliar character.
The inspiration or this range comesrom the Lt Kara Black miniature wereleased in the Limited Edition resinseries. She has always been one o ouravourite (and most popular) miniatures, and it just seemed she immediately hada strong character with an interestingstory behind her. Indeed, the originalplan was to release her as part o avignette showing her in the heat o battle- as seen in the artwork. For one reasonor another (mainly the higher cost and
risk involved) we decided not to makethe beast - but to come back and re-visitthe idea later. When we started to thinkabout her again, we decided to takea dierent approach and develop thebackground and universe around herinto a 30mm gaming range. The endresult is Sedition Wars.
As you can see, theres not a great deal
to see on the new website at present, butall that will change in the next month orso. Ill be adding regular updates to theblog about the development, and hopeto have the website live and miniatureson sale in the next 4-6 weeks. Initiallythey will be available as very limitedresin releases (most likely around 100castings), ollowed by unlimited metal
runs. Why do both? For me its simple- we want to produce a small number operect copies o each gure to appealto painters and collectors. I realise thatthe price point or resins could be aprohibitive actor or those wanting togame with them, so the main runs willbe in high quality metal.

Newest MeMbers Its a great privilege to be asked to talk about RandomGeek Moments here in Portal.
With Random Geek Moments, the idea o the videoconvey inormation about the hobby o painting miniawhether its minis or things related to the hobby.
The reviews started out with me just being silly and some un; I never expected such a (or the most par t) presponse to them. In act, I was pretty sure that the resto the rst video would be airly negative, so I didnt pdoing anymore. Ater people said they liked it and askmore, I made another one and, once again, people sareally liked it.
It was then that I decided to make the videos on a rbasis.
While Ive never claimed to be an expert on the hobby, hope to give a point o view on various aspects o it. Tmore to the hobby than just minis, so I want to try and pas much inormation as possible. Maybe Ill bring somto things that people may not have realised or known
I try to approach the videos as something that I have liked to have seen back when I was rst startiin the hobby. Thats not to say that theyre geared tobeginners only, but I try to bear in mind that there mipeople watching that are new to the hobby.
The character o Angry Random Geek was meant toone-time thing, just to inject some humour into the
and keep it rom being too dull or boring. However, people seemed to like him so much it was mentionseveral people that he helped keep things entertainingI decided to keep him around.
So what does the uture hold or RGM? Well, hopecontinues or a long time to come as I really enjoy doreviews. Ideally Id like to get to the point where there amaybe even three, reviews per week, but thats somthat isnt really viable right now. While there certainly shortage o minis and other things hobby-related, its o me being able to get them.
So or right now, Ill keep putting up one each wee
hopeully youll keep watching them.I you have any questions about the videos, eel ree tme a PM at WAMP.

Skullcrats Spring Basing kit
Skullcrats is a one man shop located in the USA.It is run by a nice guy named James, whom Ihave never met, but talked to on his orum romtime to time. Ill say this guy really takes care andputs his all into his products. Skullcrats oers avariety o basing supplies some o which havebeen assembled into basing kits. There are 5 kitsavailable, one or each o the our seasons and aSteampunk basing kit. Rumors are there is a sci-and a antasy kit in the works.
Today Ill be reviewing Skullcrats Spring basingkit.
This kit is jam packed ull o all sorts o goodiesone would need make a ton o bases.
The website claims: The kits should decoratea minimum o 30 standard 30mm round bases,20 standard 40mm bases, or 10 standard 50mmround bases.
Im sure this could be stretched urther though. Ind mysel using one product or another rom hiskits in almost every base I make.
The kit contains the ollowing materials in Springcolors where applicable:
Flock Scatter
Static grass
Field grass
Spring vegetation
Lea Scatter: (The Birch seed ones)

Lichen
A little bit o skulpty bake clay

Quality
These materials are made by him in smallbatches with ne care. I cant say Ive ever been

buyers have been discouraged trying tone item rom the kit that is all used up.

Painting Rubble Bases - Pt.1
This is the rst o a 4 par t series that will show, with detailedinstructions, how you can create a top quality paint job on
the Urban Rubble bases rom BNS Miniatures. Each articlewill cover a dierent theme and todays is asphalt. Youregoing to need the ollowing materials:
STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 3 STEP
The rst step is to prime yourbase, white or black- it reallydoesnt matter which, but i youprime with any colour other thanblack youre going to have to basecoat the entire thing with ChaosBlack.
Ater youve got a consistent coato black were ready to put onthe main color. Mix 1 part ChaosBlack to 1 part Codex Grey. Thisis going to give us a very nice, dark grey thats going to orm theoundation or the rest o the base.Paint everything with this colourexcept or the deepest recesses, which we will leave black.
The dierences between this andthe preceding picture are subtlebecause this next step results in asubtle shit in the tone o the paint.Wash the entire base at leasttwice with Badab Black. This stepdarkens the recesses o the greyand tones down the entire colour.Once the wash is dry youre goingto drybrush your 1:1 Chaos Black/Codex Grey mixture over all theraised areas.
This is where the Skull Whcomes into play. Make suredrybrush is very dry and kewiping it across your paperuntil youre pretty certain nolet because we have to becareul with this step. First, the fat areas o the base wSkull White and then drybrall o the raised edges and suraces. You dont want anstreaks or smears o white.

STEP 5 STEP 6 STEP 7
STEP 8 STEP 9 STEP 10
This is another subtle step thatwill tone down the sharp contrasto the pure white and help thecolours blend better. Coat theentire base with a wash o DevlanMud and let it dry completely.Next, do another wash o DevlanMud, but this time only wash inthe recesses and cracks. We dontwant to tone down the fat parto the asphalt any more than wealready have. Let the base sit tothe side until it is completely dry.
To sell the idea that this is a pieceo broken asphalt Im going toadd a yellow dividing line. Usingmasking tape, I block out a 1/8strip o base where I will paintthe line. Be sure that you covereverything that youre not paintingwith masking tape to protect therest o the base.
Salt Masking is a process whereyou add texture to a surace bygetting salt to adhere to it, paintover the area, and then gentlyremove the salt so that theyundercoat shows through.
The rst step is to spray thearea with hairspray until it getsa light sheen. Next, youre goingto quickly sprinkle a pinch o seasalt over the area. It will mix withthe hairspray, which will act as anadhesive to keep the salt in place.Be very sparing in the amount osalt you use. Too much will ruinthe eect. You can always use anold brush or a toothpick to removesome salt crystals that are illplaced. You must allow the hairspray tocompletely dry beore you moveon to the next step. I suggestwaiting at least 1 hour. One wayyou can tell i its completelydry is that the salt crystals aretranslucent when theyre wet, soi theyre opaque and white youknow theyre dry. Also take a smallwhi- a heavy scent means itsstill drying.
To be honest, an airbrush is thebest way to apply paint whenyoure working with paint masking.I youre working with largesuraces then its an absolutenecessity! But, since wereworking with such a small space,we can get away with brushingon the paint. Were going to applythe Golden Yellow in several thincoats or two reasons:
Because were paintingyellow over black
A thick coat o paint willmake it extremely diicultto remove the salt
Let the paint dry or at least an
hour beore you move onto the
next step.
Removing the salt is a slowprocess, so be patient with thisstep. Youre going to need amedium stiness brush and a tap.Hold the base under cool runningwater and gently brush away thesalt. It should take you between7 to 10 minutes to remove all thesalt rom beneath the yellow paint,so take your time. Once yourecondent that all the salt has beenremoved youre going to need to
set the base aside and let it dryout again. I you try to remove themasking tape now you risk pullingthe paint right o the base. Onceeverything is dry you can removethe masking tape and admire yourhandiwork.
Whats that? Think were done?Well youre wrong! This base isgood as it is, but the next parto this Step By Step will make itlook great! The key to creatinggreat bases is in the details andthe next part o this series willshow how we can add some greatdetails with static grass.
The bases eatured areavailable rom

Darklord:To do woodgrain I paint the wood in a midtone woody colour. Then I will apply thin streaks using thinned paint - one lightcolour and one darker , make the lines slightly wiggled (butnot much) and i needed add a thinned wash to dull thestreaks down. Jobs a good un
kdlynch:
I just two-tone it: one colour laid down as the base, then paintne lines to represent the woodgrain. Need them as ne aspossible, and more than likely, squiggly-ish. For the colours, and patterns o woodgrain, really depends on the type owood, and whether its aged... this is where Google imagescan come in handy.
SRP:I sometimes dont use a brush to get the ne lines.....Asharpened wooden toothpick works ok or me...Keepsharpening and the wood carries enough paint to do miniareas....
MaGie:I usually use three colours on woodgrain (i its not a tarea) : a very dark brown or the base colour (VMC blbrown) and bestial brown and bestial brown + bleach(about 2:1) or the wood grain. Ater I paint the stripeslighter colours, I add some stripes with the base colou
can place them in a ashion that covers up thick highluse only a little dilution but with some fow improver.Usually when I paint woodgrain I keep going back & the three colours until I get what I want.
exilesjjb:Here is one rom let eld paint the area a light colourfesh works well, then paint with a rich brown oil paintwith one o those old knackered brushes we all have the bristles along in the direction you want the grain vpressure to vary the tone. BTW works best on larger a
toVarnishornottoVarnish?
Darklord:
...that is the question
(in regards to non-gaming pieces).
what are the pro and cons o eitherand which varnishes do you ndwork best?
GunjiNoKanrei:For display miniature no varnish.Display miniatures dont get handled (well, they do gethandled, but usually they have a plinth o some sortmeaning the miniatures doesnt get touched), varnishingis an (unnecessary) risk (rosting, sheen, ...) and varnishtends to tone down the highligh ts altering the result youspent hours upon hours to achieve.
ScottRadom:I only do gaming level stu and I always use two cotes oTestors Dullcote. But, thats gaming stu.
IactonDullcote. Gotta love some dullcote. I use matt medium quiteregularly in my paints but some glazes and washes still
have a sheen and dullcote makes my lie easier and makesme happy rom the umes
Darklord:Thats the main reason I use it to dull down the shinsell all mine so the protection helps).
Problem I have with dullcote is its tendency to go shthough that may be down to mine being brush on?
Iacton:Yep. Not shaken up the mix enough.
Moth:One hit with GW Purity Seal... Then 2 hi ts with TestCoat... always
Lost Boy:Everything I do is or display and everything gets coI always varnish the gure(s) separately and attach
to the base once thats been varnished, then seal twith thinned GW matt varnish. For the main varnish, I use 2-3 thin coats o GW puseal...Its the dogs baw-baws
wet palette
Tonbo:
So does anyone here use a wet
palette? I so how do you like it andany tips?
lizcam:I have used a wet pallet beore. They are great i youregoing to sit and do marathon paint sessions but I messwith my paints too much or it to be much help.
Tonbo:I thought the point was you didnt have to sit down orever because you can keep your paints wet over nightand stu like that.
ScottRadom:Mine is the cats ass. Best thing I ever bought with theexception o good brushes.Mine doesnt give me the two week shel lie itpromises, but I dont store mine in the ridge. I think itsgreat or mixing colours or blends and such. I can justplop down my base colour, and my highlight colour andmix the two in varying degrees as I go. Love it.But I dont use that retarder stu that Ive seen you andthe other PP guys using, so I dont know i that makes itany more or less necessary or you guys to use.
lizcam:Remember I live in a desert. Even a wet palettealways work here. I tend to mix paints into smallplastic snap top pots. The kind you get in cheap
airplane kits. That way I can mix a bunch o a coThin it and use it or months.
Darklord:I got given one, just an appropriate plastic tub wsome palette paper then greaseproo or the topjob done.
Captain Sprout:I dont actually store paint in mine and wash it omostly ater every session..I nd its just a good keep paint thin and consistent, rather than to keSo no ridge worries there!

Favourite sculpt? Again this produces indecision. Currently Isay its the Pegaso Roaming Knight, XV century.
How long have you been in the hobby? I started out painting mwhen I was about 15 and have had various phases through mmodelling, antasy and sci in all manner o scales. Thats years and many models. Eek.

By about 1:30pm on the Saturday aternoon whilst I was satin the bar area discussing what had been seen andpurchased by riends and Wamp members whilst wewatched competition entries being registered and carriedpast in various sized boxes an announcement was made tosay that they had reached 1000 entries or the competition, this gure ar exceeds previous years which is usually
around 600 entries and there was still 1 hours beoreregistration closed and judging commenced! One o the nicest things about the competition is it isimpossible to know how things will turn out as there is nopre registration and the competition itsel is judged using theOpen System this means there is no rst past the post andeach model is judged on its own merits and not againstanother model in the same class. It is a much airer systemo judging and means that you can have more than one goldmedal winner in each category or i the models entered intothat category dont come up to the required standard thatthe judges mark to then there may be no gold medals in that
category. The painting completion at Euro Militaire is run over the twodays o the show, those wishing to enter pay 2 per entryand all entries have to be submitted by 3pm on the Saturdayby a panel o 50 judges, thats right I did say 50 its not atypo, which includes a head judge, these judges are thensplit down across the dierent categories and each categoryhas criteria to be met that the judges will look or working asa team. As well as the models entered into the competition
there are also display cabinets around the room wherejudges can display their work or people to see. All guentered into the competition must remain on display u4pm on the Sunday.Judging is very strict and the competition is very erceeverything needs to be painted right down to the smalbutton ore buckle and each category has its own set ocriteria that the judges are looking or, presentation plamajor part regardless o what category a model is ente
even a single gure can tell a story and the a painter nto think long and hard in the preparation or this, by rethe specic rules or each category you can get a gooor what the judges are going to be looking or. Medalsaward or commended and highly commended as welgold, silver and bronze, it is rumored that only 35 poinseparate gold rom a commended. All entries in the juncategory are awarded something as it is believed that juniors are the uture o the hobby and are thereore toencouraged. Judging commenced at 3pm and took 5 or all entries to be judged, including the judges choicebest o show. This years show was no exception to previous shows
the standard was extremely high although it was intereto hear the head judges opening speech at the start ogold medal and best o show ceremony whereby he stthat this year the standard had been even higher thanprevious years and compared it by saying that I you won a gold medal two years ago that gure entered thyear would probably only have got a commended. The medals awardedthis year were ar in excess o previousyears, I cant remember the exact quantitieswhen split down but I think it is air to say thatin total there was around 500 to 600 medalsawarded across the board and might havebeen a ew more than that. One o the categories to receive the highest
number o entries this year was the antasycategory which includes sci- as well asrelated vignettes and dioramas etc by about10:30 on the Saturday morning modelsentered into these categories were beingmoved around to make room or moreentries! During judging entries rom thesecategories were moved into other categoriesby the judges, most o these seemed to tthe civilian category rules and included someo the Nocturna models. So who won what you are all asking, well tobe honest I cant remember everybodys
names and some I cant even pronounce letalone spell but Chris Clayton (Giganticdark)took a gold or a scratch built Dragon Slayerand he also took best o show. Ben Kommetstook a silver or a non commercial sculpt oAlice in wonderland and he also tooksomething or his antastic GW Stegadon,Adrian Bay (Vincenti) took a silver or hisSpace Wol riding a Wol which he hadmanaged to nish in time but will not be
attending GD this year, Rob Herring (Orb), Tooshy,Avicena, Ritual and PrawnPower along with many opeople also won something, a ull list o all winners wappear in the Military Modelling Magazine in due coand they will also do a special no doubt which will bearound November time with ull coverage o the eveall the winners.Euro Militaire continues to be a great show... a greatweekend and i you havent been beore then you armissing out on a antastic social side o the hobby aStart saving now or next year, even i you only go oone day it is well worth the visit just to see the standmodelling and painting that you may one day aspireand or motivational value it is truly jaw dropping, disis not an excuse as people are travelling rom Italy, Gand Spain to attend this show.

Tools youll need are
1. Fast setting (5 mins) clear epoxy glue2. Toothpicks (or an old bit o something or mixing with)3. Clear shing line (2-4lbs)4. Blu-tac5. Some plastic to mix epoxy on (old blister packs will do)6. Stabby thing
Hi everyone! Well I was making
icicles for my GD entry and theres a
few minutes of down time betweeneach stage which is plenty of time to
take some pictures! So here is a quick
tutorial on how I
make icicles.
PREPARATION STEP 1
Think about how many icicles you want then double number, this eect oten has random results, so the myou do the more choice youll have and the better theend result will be. Cut your shing line up into 4cm st(you need them long so their easier to handle), also out 2 small, equal blobs o your epoxy glue (you wonneeding much), mix them together or a minute or twyou can tell once its mixed as it will go cloudy

21/46
www.wamp-orum.com
STEP 4
STEP 2 STEP 3
STEP 5
Smear a strip o blu-tac across a surace you can hangyour icicles rom (Ive used my shel, you could use thetable edge or a plinth, anything that you can suspendyour icicles rom without them touching anything. Nowdrag and twist your strips o shing line through yourepoxy, make sure you pick up plenty o glue (you canalways remove some later on), then hang your icicles up.Try to make them long so you can cut a ew up to makeshort icicles.
Now ater a ew minutes you will see the glue cometogether in small blobs, this is a good thing, it willgive us a random, natural eel, but it will be a little toopronounced. So ater the glue has stopped being very
tacky, but beore its set (usually around 3 mins) roll theepoxy end in between your ngers to smooth it out a little. The epoxy will lose some o its clarity and turn grey, thatis ne, icicles tend to be a little opaque and once the nextew layers go on it will give us that eect. Let the glue seta ull 5 minutes aterwards.
Pour yoursel out some more glue and repeat step twbut when the glue starts to go into little blobs on the
icicles, instead o using your ngers to straighten theedges drag and twist the icicles across the plastic, thway you wont loose the transparency o the glue. Youmay also want to do this stage a little quicker than thprevious stage because it will be easier to soten theedge with slightly soter glue.
Now, i youre making icicles or a 28-32mm mini, unlessone o your icicles went wrong you shouldnt needanother layer o epoxy, i youre looking at 52mm or more, you may need a ew more layers, otherwise, leave youricicles to set or around 10 minutes, they wont have ully
set yet, they will still be fexible, thats ok, it will make iteasier or us to position them later. Remove your iciclesrom the blu-tac and make two cuts, one cut a straightline across the blob at the bottom o the shing line, thiswill become the top o your icicle. Then make a diagonalcut across the thinnest point o your epoxy, or where theepoxy ends, this will become the bottom o your icicle. Youwill end up with a nice fat surace to glue your icicles anda nice sharp point that will make your icicles realistic.
Time to glue your icicles on! Have a look at some reepictures, look at where water may run o on your see how they bunch together naturally, I nd bunchtwo or three look good, with a random one here and with a mix o sizes. I use normal super glue and a ptweezers to place them on the base, once theyre mix up some more epoxy and place a little around theto bond them to the base better and to help them bleto give a more natural eel. And thats it! It usually around 20 minutes rom beginning to end, everythincost you around 6-7 but it will last you or years!
Enjoy, John.

Painting Rubble Bases - Pt
Welcome to part two o this Step
By Step series. Last time wepainted our base to look like brokenand crumbling asphalt. This time weregoing to nish the base by using staticgrass to add some details. Youre goingto need the ollowing materials:
Static Grass (Dark Green orMedium Green)
PVA Glue
Scorpion Green
Skull White
Using a brush you have set aside or this
kind o work, or a toothpick, place a ewdrops o PVA glue in strategic places onthe base. In my conceptual design orpainting this base I imagined that theasphalt has been broken or some time,so grass would be growing up betweenthe cracks and along the edges. Whenworking with static grass Ive ound itsbest to work on a piece o paper thatyoure olded in hal and then openedback up. Sprinkle the static grass overthe whole base. To make it stick wellyoure going to use your ngers to grab a
big pinch o the stu and then rub it in acircular motion with some light pressureover the areas where the glue is. Thisworks more o the grass material intothe glue and gives it a more natural look. Now, quickly turn the base over and tapthe excess static grass onto the paperyoure working on. Turn the base rightside up again and blow against the
grass rom a downward angle to help
it stand up. You can also use a brushto gently fu the grass. Once youvenished with your application o staticgrass you can use the paper we wereworking on to dump the excess backinto your container. This stus a littleexpensive, so you might as well saveas much as you can! You may want todo this step at night or beore you haveto go somewhere because we need tolet the grass completely cure beore wecan move onto the next part.
It looks okay with the grass as is, butokays not good enough or us, is it? Toreally make the grass pop were going to
paint it. For the rst step, were going touse straight Scorpion Green. Dont thinthis paint very much at all - we dont wantit to fow, we just want it to stick wherewe put it. With only a small amount onthe tip o our brush were going to gentlyhighlight the grass. This will take a ewpasses, so be patient. Your coveragedoesnt have to be perect... in act itsbest i its not. Painting on this colourallows us to layer in some more coloursthat increase the contrast o the grass. You may nd that you need to come at
the grass rom a couple dierent anglesto get it- thats ne, just be careul not toget any on the base itsel.
To give the grass a nal highlighgoing to make a pretty big colou
Mix together 4:1 Skull White to ScGreen. This is a big colour diebut dont worry about it. Were wwith a very tiny area, each indblade o static grass, so that tinwill trick our eyes into making thelook well blended. Again, wereto use a very small amount o phighlight just the tops o each bgrass. Dont thin down this paeither- i this colour runs it could reect were working on.

A word o warning at this point I think, GDUK has a lot goingon in a small space o time and also over the years a largesocial gathering that escapes the madness and go over to thehotel where they can sit and discuss the hobby in general, ina quiet and comortable setting. To this end this is likely to bea long report and photo heavy (I took over 162 photos) as I tryto cover all the new stu and the dierent aspects o the day.
I will not post all the photos hear though and will link you toa separate le o the photos at the end o the report. Hmmm,
having said that where do I start?
Gw DesiGN & stuDio
This was rather busy to say theleast and they were swampedright rom the start, being splitup and scattered all over thePavilion Hall didnt really helpmatters very much either andit was diicult trying to get in toview anything let along speakto anybody on the teams
and this situation only gotworse as the day progressedconsequently I have very little in the way o snippets o newsrom this area although I did manage to get some photos othe new Dark Eldar and their plastic sprues and have to saythey do look better than the old ones, the bikes are very niceindeed.
Nothing was heard on the release o Grey Knights thoughand apart rom the Dark Eldar nothing new was seen in thecabinets even the Fantasy side o the Design Studio onlyhad the Island o Blood gures and the High Elves that areabout to be released in the cabinets. The Three ups lookednice and I do so wish that GW and Forgeworld or that matter
would start releasing in the larger scale gures again even iit is in limited runs or the collectors amongst us.

This year the Forgeworld Design Studio was separate romthe main LG Arena Hall and was located behind the seatingarea in a nice bright area. Besides the usual rumours andpre-release gures that had been seen on the net and
pushed out in their regular newsletters there was a cosurprises waiting in the cabinets or those brave enopush through and get a look.
The Eldar Phantomwas on display, around the oEpic/Space version but is stiin progress and s
months away completion.
Imperial Armour band 10 are to covBadab War and bethese two bookssaid that they wilthe background oa dozen (thats our American Marine Chapters
with rules or each. There will be a second edition rele
Imperial Armour Vol1 which will include updated ruleswith Codex Imperial Guard etc and also Vol2 o the Masterclass is on the cards or release.
Imperial Armour 11 is denitely going to be about Eldis said to also include Cadians and Elysians along Space Marine Chapter but which one is not said, rhas it Space Wolves but I doubt this as it is already cheavily by GW and I thereore suspect it may ollowthe lines o IAs 5, 6, 9 and 10 with chapters not prevcovered in depth by GW.
In the cabinetswere various bits
including the newpre-release stu,Ork Weapon Sets,a new Land RaiderAchilles whichhas a thunder recannon, twin multi-melta sponsonmounts and extraarmour. Whatsurprised a lot opeople though, was the two new
one manned Eldarattack vehiclesthe Hornet andthe Lynx both othese looked verynice. Also later in the day I spotted a single Eldar Win the cabinet having seen only art work or this it wrumoured Aspect Warrior, yes thats right Forgewogoing to be doing Eldar characters/gures.

warhaMMer ForGe
Following the newsletter orm Forgeworld (FW) on the 24thSeptember that the rumoured Warhammer Forge would beunveiled at this years GDUK I was quite eager to see whatthey had lined up and I must say I was not disappointed inthe least as on the way to their stand next to the FW DesignTeam I passed by the hugely crowded and chaotic FW tradestand and saw a poster or their rst two gures being sold atthe FW trade stand as pre-release a Plague Toad with Riderand a Chaos Ogre.
Rick Priestly has done the bulk o the story line and isthe drive behind this along with Mark Bedord and anenthusiastic design team. On display was olders o the bookthat will eventually accompany the gures and lots o workin progress, concept sketches and completed art work. Themain poster is titled Tamurkhan The Throne o Chaos and isactually a large oil painting where as a lot o the other work isdigital art but very nice none the less.
Talking to Rick everything is based around a Chaos Incursioninto the Empire, the main character or chaos being Tamurkhanwho Rick says is a sort o maggoty thing in his own bodybut has the ability to take the orm o anything he deeats, the last deeated enemy was an Ogre thereore Tamurkhan
is currently in the orm o a giant Ogre and is riding into theEmpire on a Toad Dragon.
The whole team was very enthusiastic about the project andthe uture plans or it and have especially loved working onthe Chaos Dwars just as much as people seemed to bedemanding more o these. Rick also hinted that the wholeplot is separate to that o Warhammer Fantasy and will havea completely dierent outcome to the normal Warhammer
scenarios o this type. Also in the cabinets were thChaos War Mammoth, Giant, Fire Dragon, Ogre Riders, and a ew other chaos pieces that would Forge storey line all o these along with Ricks statemedespite initially being sold through the FW website it isthey will eventually have their own site with the usual Glink together which leads me to think they are going up the current FW antasy gures leaving FW to conceon the 40K universe.
What was in the cabinets...well a lot o nice models to sleast, most o these were still very much works in prand it is hoped to start rolling out the rst o the gures Christmas these probably being the two that were avpre-release on the day. Cabinet contents included a 3Chaos Dwar Steam Engine with 2 connonades were a Siege Bombard and a Demolition Rocket, Dwar Engineer and engine crews, A beautiul MarieLandship which will eventually have a crew and other or it, an Empire character by the name o Theodor Brmounted on a Demigrion (no wings) and also a ghim on oot, Chaos Dwar Steam Engine SkullcrackeMagma Cannon, Nurgle Trolls, Chaos Nurgle Ogres,
Rot Beast, Toad Dragon Plague Toads, Chaos Warriothe Carmine Dragon, upgrade sets or Empire SpeaHalberdiers and Hand Gunners/Crossbowmen.

As usual GW ran its GD Art competition whereby entries had to be submitted onpaper no bigger than A4 size, disappointingly there were a ew nice entries submittedon A3 size paper which I would imagine will have not been judged. Over all the qualityo the entries or this was very good and o a very high standard ranging rom whatseemed like computer generated art to sketches.
This years static displays included The Siege o Volganoand The Island o Blood tables and the Art o GamesWorkshop which eatured the Warhammer Art Exhibition andalso gave people a chance to talk to the artists responsibleor the art in the latest Warhammer rulebook.
Fantasy Flight Games were in attendance although never
really seemed to be that busy but did have a steady fowo interest, whereas the Space Marine game or thePlaystation and Xbox received queues, the people behind theUltramarines movie gave a seminar and had large queuesor people to go into a cinema to view snippets o the movie.
Several other lectures were given by GW during the daywhich were booked in advance but word rom those thatattended these was not good and that they were boring!
GaMiNG tables & traDe staNDs
Gaming tables were denitely decreased this year, inprevious years there has been upwards o 60 gaming tablesbut this year I saw only 31 and these were o a disappointingstandard. They were also very bunched together with verylittle room around them to see anything let alone participatein any o the games taking place.
The two main trade stands were that o Games Woand Forgeworld, both were extremely busy throughoday but the usual chaos abounded around the Forgtrade stand with people waiting over an hour and a get served, this didnt really abate during the day eithwas just as bad in the aternoon although I did manageserved within 5 minutes by spotting a gap and speakwhen the they asked who needed serving, despite it2:30pm when I was at the stand I managed to gethings I wanted with only one thing having to be oor ree postage rom them I even managed to get tWarhammer Forge pieces and the new Grot Mega
which really surprised me.
One o the things that annoyed me though was Forgewinability to ull reservation orders yet they still hadthings or sale on the trade stand!
Chaos ruled the day as always at the Forgeworld tradethis year they used the excuse o new tills at the last with nobody knowing how to use them but given a ro over 60 eet they only had 4 tills maximum anywa

Reservation collection point had one o these tills only despitethe act that I had been told earlier in the week when chasingup conrmation o my reservation that they had received over600 reservations. You put your order orward or claimed youreservation order only to be then put in a queue and wait
or your name tobe called out soyou could go to atill and pay or it!
This is nothingnew really andis the same yearin year out withthe Forgeworldstand but this yearseemed to be theworst and can onlyleave a personto wonder whothe hell is doingthe organising orthem and why are
they still beingemployed let alonewonder what wouldhappen i Health &saety paid them avisit one year.
GolDeN DeMoN coMpetitioN
To me GD has always been about the Golden Demon contestand the people it brings in many o whom I have got to knowover the years. This year however seemed to be lackingin entries to most o the categories compared to previousyears with many cabinets either empty or partially ull, it was
rumoured that this year would be the last year or large scalegures and that next year sees the end o the LOTR Licenseor GW which will mean the last year or the LOTR Categoryas well.
Out o 3 cabinets or LOTR there was only 53 entrants anddue to the restrictive range and rules that cover the entriesinto this class you tend to see the same gures time andagain all be it dierent paint styles but ater 6 or 7 years o amounted Arwen or Gandal there is only so much you can do.Other categories didnt are much better with the single gureand regiment classes all having empty display cabinets.
The GW sta behind the barriers appeared to have had
no brie on how to handle peoples entries and I evencomplained to the girl that took my entry rom me aboutthe way she handled it, placing her ngers straight acrossthe base with the potential to squash oliage and wire etc.Figures were being placed and removed rom cabinets piecemeal and handled by the actual gure itsel with bare hands, really annoying as some people dont varnish their gures orcompetitions and handled this way without plastic or latexgloves causes all sorts o problems or the owner.
Judging was once again a bone o contention thiswith erratic being one word to describe it, some piecshould have made the cut were overlooked and othersit that clearly shouldnt have, entries were put in the categories and then not moved to the correct category dbeing blatantly obvious where they should have bee40K single class had at least 3 entries that should havin a dierent category as they were either mounted gmore than two gures on the base.

Year ater year people have complained to GW about thejudging system and even people who have acted as judges atother successul shows have oered advice to GW to changethe judging system but they continue to operate a rst pastthe post system instead o the open or American judgingsystem saying that they are promoting the hobby, theirapproach to Their competition. However, I eel this doesvery little to promote the hobby or themselves as a companyor or the youth o today who will be the painters o tomorrow.
It was alsonoticeable that thewinners o the Dueland Large ScaleCategories were upon the big screensbeore 10am in themorning! Tryingto get anywherenear most o thecabinets ater therst 30 minutes tohave a look was
near impossible asusual.
Some o the winners and nalists included Bertnernie,Chameleon, Steve B, Darklord, PrawnPower, Iacton and WarGrion. Other winners included gold to Chris Clayton and MattParkes, Matt also collected his 4th Slayer Sword or his entryinto Diorama which he has been working on or several years. This year seemed chaotic in this area as well though, therewas no clear indication o who had won what in most o theclasses with some o the Demon winners not even being onthe top shel and by 3:25pm the cabinets were being emptiedand people being told to leave
the Pavilion Hall as they wereclosing!
One o the things I enjoy about
Golden Demon is the people it brings to the hobby o pthese gures, as I was putting away my entry and talriends at the prep table a lady and her sun came ovethe cabinets to put away their gures. Her son had ein the Young Bloods Class and she had picked up a her third ever painted mini which she had entered into Monster, she had got into the hobby ater a bit o mothbonding and this was the third year she had entered GDemon, with a bit o sculpting experience she had m
base and modied a Skaven Rat Ogre.
The mosaics on the base and the reehandvery well executed and it was a pleasure to bto photograph this entry out o the cabinet evwas only by the camera fash or lighting. Knothemum over on Platoon Britannica it is hopeshe will grace us with her presence here on as her work was well worth seeing despite hergoing without attention as she worked on this m

All together it was a very disappointing show with a lot oinconsistencies across the board, it would seem this yearGDUK was all about howmuch money GW could makein a day and i this is a trendI can very easily see things
going backwards rom here notorwards. As it was the areaoccupied this year was a lotsmaller than previous yearsand the organisation waslacking and very evidently so,foor plans were not given outat entry and the plans on thewebsite were last years!
With no show discounts andwhat has to be the mostexpensive one day show/competition on the UK gamingcircuit at 30 entrance ee(with a gure thrown in) plusthe 8 NEC charge to park thecar it has let a lot o peopleeeling disappointed and eitherwondering whether to bothergoing next year or alreadydecided not to go at all.

How did the idea come about? This has been a project as a break to another big project o mine.Simple joy. I saw the model by Tre and already had the scene
in my mind, seeing him lurking in a medieval alley. I guess thiscame rom the books I am reading at the moment, some historicalmedieval stories. Ive tried to catch the really tight eeling such asmall street has and gave away a lot o space by building up thebase around the model. Dark, dirty at night the model comingout o the shadow. It was really hard to achieve this look on sucha small area. I already knew that the model might get lost in thedark alley I was building - so Ive tried to position him at a placewhere you can see him. I have thereore cut the wall and onlyshowed a detail place o the walls.
How much time did it take to realise your idea?I have to say that I am a very slow painter. I thought a lot and Iguess it took me equal time in painting and building due to onlylooking at it. The real time needed or building it up was about
20 hours. Painting also around 20 hours. It eels that it took muchmore time to only think about it.
What materials did you use to build up the scene?I did build up the walls rom plastic card and sculpted milliput, some wooden pieces, a necklace chain, some wire and woodenveneer or the roofng shingles all build up on top o a woodensocket. You can read an article about the roos and see someWork in Progress shots here
Did you encounter and problems building it?I did orget about the roos. First I wanted the model in the middleo the base. When I realised that the roos made this thought allbad I had to place the model more to the ront and had to work on
the counter weight with some additional stu like, or example thestore shield.
What is your favourite spot on this scene, the one which youare really proud of?I am really happy about the result overall. That Ive managed tocatch what I frst thought o. Done through the base compositionand the colours used.
Any bits your unhappy with?Absolutely. I am not happy with the reds. I am normally someonewho looks on really clean blendings and to catch the atmosphereI wished or I worked more chaotically and at some places dirty. So the red is not my avourite at all, but in the end I am happy.
Any tips for others wishing to create something similar?Take your time to look at it rom every side again and again.Allow the concept to grow, i something does not ft like you wantit too, eel ree to change your concept in the way that you arehappy again. Most important i you think you dont have such astrong imagination read at www.massivevoodoo.com
