Sandwiched between Walt Disney World and the Daytona InternationalSpeedway is the 4th smallest county in Florida.

Seminole County was founded in 1913. The county harbors the confluence ofheadwaters for the St. John’s River. With its wetland type habitat, residentslearned early to fight off mosquitoes, alligators patrolling the water’s shoreline, and bears wandering through their neighborhood.

These challenges attracted tough individuals used to living an independent lifestyle. In case oftrouble, Seminole County law enforcement was never too far away to step in and maintain order. Ifan arrest was necessary the first stop would be the ‘old jail’. In the beginning, the jail also served asblacksmith shop, a livery stable, a lunchroom, a county health department and a dry cleaners!

Upon arriving at the Seminole County Jail, everyone arrested had their name, age, race, date ofarrest and crime was recorded into the Jail Book. This massive sized leather ledger, in a cycolokbinder, contained lined paper whose pages each had holes that slipped snugly around its 2 metaladjustable posts. Before migrating to a more sophisticated documentation system in the 1930's, theledger would end up being filled with hundreds of pages and thousands of names.

The Museum of Seminole County History now houses this treasure. Due to its deterioratingcondition museum staff carefully turn a single page of the ledger each day, allowing visitors to peerinto history only a few entries at a time.

Enter Scot French, Ph.D., Director of Public History and an Associate Professor in the History Department at the University of Central Florida.

Dr. French has a vision of transforming this aging gem into an interactive tool for museum goersand history lovers, for generations to come. His plan's blueprint involves using the power of onlinecrowd-sourcing to create a searchable database of the book's contents. However, to start the bookneeded to be digitized. That is when French reached out to E-Z Photo Scan, powered by i/oTrak.

In December 2015, the ledger was transferred to E-Z Photo Scan’s awaiting digitization team whilethe museum was closed during the holiday season. Page-by-page the team skillfully disassembledthe ledger and digitized each page, using a Kodak A3 flatbed accessory and the Kodak PictureSaver Scanning System. In less than 48 hours, the project was complete and the historic treasuretransferred back into the custody of the museum.

Through E-Z Photo Scan’s donation of more than 40 hours of labor and its Kodak Picture SaverScanning System, the ledger was successfully transformed into high-resolution/high-quality digitalimages. French’s dream is now closer to reality having moved on to its next phase of indexing thehand written contents using these scanned pages.
